Chickweed and Henbit: Spring Spraying Is Too Late

How to get rid of chickweed and henbit: Clemson puts optimum post-emergence timing at mid-autumn. By the time you see spring flowers, the seed is already made.

Every April, the same photograph arrives: a lawn shot through with tiny white flowers, or with low purple ones on square stems. The question attached to it is always some version of what do I spray?

The honest answer is that you are looking at the end of the story. Both plants germinated last autumn, spent the winter growing while your lawn did nothing, and are now flowering because they are about to die. Spray them and you will get a result. You would have got most of that result anyway.

A Winter Annual Runs Backwards

Most lawn weed advice is built around summer annuals — crabgrass is the model. Seed germinates in spring, the plant grows through summer, frost kills it, and you prevent next year’s crop with a barrier laid down before spring germination.

Winter annuals invert every step of that. Clemson states the cycle plainly:

“Winter annuals sprout in the fall, thrive during the winter, and die in late spring or early summer.”

Michigan State’s version adds the detail that matters for timing:

“They germinate in the fall, over-winter in a vegetative state, flower in the spring and produce seeds by late-spring to early-summer before ultimately dying.”

Read that sequence against when you notice the plant. The flowers are step three of four. By the time the lawn is purple or white enough to prompt a search, the plant has completed nearly its whole life and is entering the part where it makes next year’s problem.

Clemson describes chickweed’s version specifically: it “germinates in the fall, grows during the winter and, produces seed from spring to early summer, then dies.”

One honest complication, because chickweed does not read the textbook as cleanly as henbit does. Penn State classifies it as “generally” a winter annual but records that it germinates “during spring, summer, and fall”, produces “one or two generations per year” and “can sometimes act as a short-lived perennial.” So in some lawns chickweed is a year-round nuisance rather than a single autumn cohort. That does not change the best treatment window — it just means you may see it outside the season this article describes, and that is normal rather than a failed diagnosis.

Telling Them Apart

Three plants get confused here and the checks are quick.

Common chickweed — count the petals, then look at the stem

Penn State gives the feature people misread:

“Small flowers (¼ inch or less in diameter) occur at tips of stems and each flower has five white petals.”“Individual petals are deeply divided; thus, flowers appear to have ten petals.”

So if you counted ten, you counted correctly and there are five. The rest of the plant: leaves “arranged opposite one another on stems”, “ovate and pointed at the tip, approximately ½ to 1 inch in length”, with stems that “grow prostrate along the soil surface and root at nodes” — which is why it forms a mat rather than a clump.

Clemson adds a stem test that settles it on its own: common chickweed’s stems “have a single line of hairs running along their length.” A single line, not hairs all over. It is an odd enough feature that once you have seen it you will not need the flower.

That last point matters because there is a second chickweed. Clemson describes sticky chickweed (Cerastium glomeratum), “or mouse-ear chickweed,” as “a mat-forming branched winter annual with fuzzy, opposite leaves that resemble mouse-ears”, with stems “covered with dense” hairs. Fuzzy all over means mouse-ear; one neat line of hairs means common chickweed.

Henbit and purple deadnettle — the one people actually ask about

These two are so alike that “henbit vs purple deadnettle” is a search in its own right — and our two sources describe the leaves differently enough that the popular “just look at the leaf shape” advice is less reliable than it sounds.

Michigan State:

“The leaves of both are deeply veined covered with soft hairs, but the leaves of purple deadnettle are triangular and the upper leaves are often purple in color. The leaves of henbit are more rounded to heart-shaped.”

Penn State’s description assigns the shapes differently — henbit has “round green leaves with deeply scalloped edges” while purple dead nettle has “heart-shaped, scalloped leaves.” So MSU calls henbit heart-shaped and Penn State reserves that word for deadnettle. They agree henbit is the rounder of the two and disagree on what to call the other one, which is why leaf outline alone leaves people stuck.

Two features neither source contradicts, and both are easier to see:

  • The colour at the top of the plant. MSU: purple deadnettle’s “upper leaves are often purple in color.” Henbit’s stay green. On deadnettle the top of the plant looks like it has been dipped in wine.
  • The length of the flower tube. Penn State: henbit’s “pink flowers have a much longer tube than dead nettle flowers.” Henbit’s blooms are noticeably elongated and slightly hooded; deadnettle’s are shorter and sit tighter into the leaves.

Penn State adds one more for henbit alone: those round scalloped leaves “attach to a deep red short stem.” A red stalk under a green leaf is henbit.

Both share what MSU calls “the characteristic square stem of plants in the Mint family.” Roll the stem between your fingers and you will feel four flat faces. That same square stem shows up on creeping charlie, which is a mint too and a frequent third suspect in the same lawn — though creeping charlie is a perennial and does not follow the calendar below.

The other broadleaf weeds in this cluster run on the ordinary calendar rather than this inverted one, which is worth knowing before you assume a single spring spray covers the lawn: dandelions are perennials with a taproot, clover is a perennial that spreads by stolon, and both are treated on a schedule opposite to the one below.

And the practical note: telling henbit from deadnettle changes nothing about what you do. They are winter annuals on the same schedule and fall to the same products. Identify them for satisfaction, not for strategy.

Why a Spring Spray Looks Like It Worked

This is the part that keeps the wrong habit alive.

You spray in April. Within two or three weeks the chickweed is collapsing and the henbit is browning off. The product looks excellent.

But run the calendar back over that fortnight. MSU has these plants producing seed “by late-spring to early-summer before ultimately dying” — so during the exact window in which you judged your herbicide a success, the plant was scheduled to set seed and die of heat on its own. You bought the last three weeks of a life that had already happened, and the seed for next year was made either way.

That is why the same lawn produces the same weeds the following March no matter how diligent the spring spraying was. Nothing failed. The treatment was aimed at a stage of the plant where the outcome was already decided.

The Two Windows That Actually Work

Mid-autumn: kill the plants while they are small

Clemson’s instruction is one sentence and it is the most useful thing on this page:

“Optimum timing of post-emergence herbicides is mid-autumn.”

The reasoning follows from the life cycle rather than from the chemistry. In mid-autumn the plants are weeks old, small, actively growing, and have not made a seed. Everything that makes a spring application feel futile is reversed.

There is a second, quieter advantage. In autumn your lawn is not competing for your attention — you are not also fighting crabgrass, and cool-season turf is in its best growing period, so it closes over the gaps the dying weeds leave.

Read the actives, not the shelf label, because chickweed is fussier than most broadleaf weeds. Penn State:

“This weed can be controlled with various postemergence herbicides, particularly those containing dicamba, MCPP, and/or fluroxypyr.”

Note what is absent from that list. 2,4-D is the backbone of most three-way lawn products and it is excellent on dandelion, but for chickweed the working partners are the other two. Late summer: stop them germinating at all

Cheaper, earlier, and the option most people already own the bag for. Michigan State:

“A late-summer application of a preemergence herbicide that targets crabgrass and other weeds at the point of germination should help reduce future winter annual infestations (example active ingredients include dithiopyr, pendimethalin and prodiamine).”

Those three names are worth pausing on: they are the crabgrass preventers. The bag you buy in March for crabgrass and the bag you would buy in August for winter annuals are frequently the same product. What changes is the month.

The conflict you have to decide. A pre-emergent is a germination barrier and it does not know your grass seed from a weed’s. Late summer is also the cool-season seeding window, so on a cool-season lawn you can protect the autumn or seed the autumn, not both. If your lawn is thin, seed. A thin lawn is what let these weeds in — Clemson notes chickweed “commonly infests thin or dormant lawn areas” — and a barrier over thin ground protects a problem rather than solving it.

If It Is Already April

You are here now, so the useful question is what is worth doing this season.

  • Spraying is optional and low-value. The plants are dying anyway. The one case where it is worth it is a heavy infestation that is genuinely smothering turf, or a lawn you cannot bear to look at — both legitimate, neither a control programme.
  • Mowing does more than spraying at this point, because the target is seed. Cutting off flowers before they finish is the only April action that changes next spring, and mowing regularly is a cultural control Penn State lists in its own right.
  • Put the real work in the diary now. Late summer for the barrier, mid-autumn for the spray. Both are months when nobody is thinking about chickweed, which is exactly why the cycle repeats.
  • Fix the thinness. Penn State’s cultural remedy is “improving turf density through fertilization, regular mowing, and use of turfgrasses well-adapted to site conditions.” That third item is the one people skip: the wrong grass for the site produces thin turf every year regardless of how well it is fed, and growing grass in shade covers the commonest version of it.

The Honest Summary

  1. These are winter annuals. Clemson: they sprout in the fall, thrive during the winter, and die in late spring or early summer. Everything else follows.
  2. April flowers mean you are late. MSU has them seeding by late spring, so the spring spray you judge a success mostly coincided with the plant’s own death.
  3. Mid-autumn is the post-emergent window — Clemson’s word is optimum — because the plants are small, growing and seedless.
  4. Late summer is the cheaper window, using dithiopyr, pendimethalin or prodiamine — the crabgrass preventers, moved to a different month.
  5. You cannot seed and prevent in the same autumn. If the lawn is thin, seeding wins; thin turf is what invited these in.
  6. For chickweed, read for dicamba, MCPP or fluroxypyr, not for a 2,4-D-led bottle.
  7. Henbit or purple deadnettle? Triangular purple-topped leaves are deadnettle, rounded heart-shaped are henbit — and it makes no difference to the treatment.

Why does my weed killer not work on chickweed?

Two reasons, and the first is timing rather than product. If you spray in April, the plant is already producing seed and is weeks from dying of heat anyway, so the result you see would largely have happened without you. The second is the active ingredient. Penn State names dicamba, MCPP and fluroxypyr for chickweed specifically — the standard advice to reach for a broadleaf bottle hides the fact that not all broadleaf bottles are alike, and one leaning heavily on 2,4-D is a weaker choice against this weed than against a dandelion.
