What your Bermuda lawn needs, season by season.
Spring
- Apply pre-emergent by mid-March (soil temp 55°F)
- Scalp and bag Bermuda once at green-up to remove dormant thatch
- First fertilization after 100% green-up — never earlier
- Aerate compacted clay soils April–May
Summer
- Water deeply and infrequently (1 inch/week, respecting local watering schedules)
- Raise mowing height during drought stress
- Avoid herbicide applications above 90°F — turf injury risk
- Treat fire ant mounds with bait products in early summer
Fall
- Apply fall pre-emergent by early September for winter weeds
- Fertilize warm-season turf 4–6 weeks before first frost
- Watch for brown patch in St. Augustine as nights cool
- Overseed ryegrass in October only if desired (competes with spring green-up)
Winter
- Spot-treat henbit, chickweed and clover on warm days
- Do not fertilize dormant warm-season turf
- Water dormant lawns monthly during dry winters to prevent desiccation
