That cheerful yellow flower is a perennial with a taproot up to 10 inches deep, a seed head that rides the wind for miles, and the ability to regrow from any root fragment you leave behind. Killing the leaves is easy — killing the plant is the game.
The good news is that dandelion is the easy member of this family: an ordinary three-way product does reach its taproot. Two of its neighbours do not respond that way — creeping Charlie and wild violet need a different active ingredient entirely.
Why Dandelions Invade Lawns
Dandelions exploit weak turf. Thin canopy, compacted soil, low mowing and scalped edges all create the sunlight-on-soil conditions their seeds need.
Arizona soils — Calcareous desert soils across the basins, with caliche — a cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan — at shallow and unpredictable depth through southern Arizona; deeper alluvium along the Salt, Gila and Santa Cruz river corridors, and thinner rocky soils as you climb toward Flagstaff and the Mogollon Rim. — make it worse: where caliche stops water, salts cannot leach past the root zone and accumulate in it, so an Arizona lawn can fail from salt while being watered generously. Their establishment recommendation is concrete: put at least eight inches of topsoil over caliche before laying a lawn on it. Identification
You almost certainly know the flower — but catch them before they bloom:
- Rosette stage — flat cluster of jagged, deeply-toothed leaves hugging the ground
- Flower stage — hollow, milky stems topped with a single yellow bloom
- Seed stage — the white “puffball.” If you see this, you’re already funding next month’s invasion
False dandelions (catsear, hawkbit) look similar but have forked flower stems. The treatment below handles them too.
Treatment Options
Timing matters more than product choice in Arizona. Your spray window is March–May and during monsoon flushes; Celsius-type products handle 100°F+ windows — and because Arizona lawns are predominantly Bermuda, check that any product you buy lists it on the label.The label check before buying is not just prudence. Our verdict: If your soil is soft or you pull after rain, the simpler tool does the same job for less. A dandelion-proof lawn is mostly a dense lawn:

- Feed on schedule — the Arizona window is Bermuda: light monthly feedings May–September, plus iron for alkalinity yellowing
- Fall broadleaf application — the highest-leverage dandelion move. Dandelions in Arizona
Everything above is national. What changes locally is when you can spray, how hard the ground is when you try to pull, and which other broadleaf weeds the same application will take out. For a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b, 10a:
Autumn is your window, and frost sets its edge
The highest-leverage dandelion application is the autumn one, and Colorado State gives the mechanism: as winter approaches, perennial broadleaf weeds are storing energy reserves in stems and roots, and a fall-applied herbicide will enter the plant and travel to these plant parts with the food reserves. Their window is early September to early November, with late spring or early summer as the second best. Expect it to beat a spring spray rather than to be final — a mature taproot can take more than one pass. Locally your post-emergent window runs March–May and during monsoon flushes; Celsius-type products handle 100°F+ windows, and first frost lands around Occasional light frosts December–January in Phoenix; a few more nights in Tucson. Weeds have to be actively growing for a systemic herbicide to translocate down to the root, so the useful part of that window closes before the frost, not on it. Last frost, for the spring bookend: Mid-February (Phoenix area).
Rain decides whether an application counts: Desert: 8–12 in/year concentrated in the July–September monsoon; extreme summer heat and drought — lawns are 100% irrigation-dependent. Humidity here reads Very low (single-digit afternoons in June; brief monsoon spikes) — low enough that fungal disease is rarely the limiting factor on an Arizona lawn, and evaporative demand is. The exception is the July-to-September monsoon, when humidity and heat arrive together and the overseeded ryegrass is already gone; that window is the only time a disease question is worth asking here..
Which puller your soil actually allows
Arizona soil is Calcareous desert soils across the basins, with caliche — a cemented calcium-carbonate hardpan — at shallow and unpredictable depth through southern Arizona; deeper alluvium along the Salt, Gila and Santa Cruz river corridors, and thinner rocky soils as you climb toward Flagstaff and the Mogollon Rim., draining: Fast through the desert sand until it hits caliche, and then not at all. University of Arizona Extension describes caliche as soil particles cemented by calcium carbonate and calls it a common problem in southern Arizona: it restricts root development, blocks drainage, and makes iron unavailable. The consequence that catches people is salinity — where caliche stops water, salts cannot leach past the root zone and accumulate in it, so an Arizona lawn can fail from salt while being watered generously. Their establishment recommendation is concrete: put at least eight inches of topsoil over caliche before laying a lawn on it. Depth to caliche therefore matters more than surface texture, and salt crystals showing mid-lawn are a leaching signal, not a fertilizer one.. Selective broadleaf herbicides containing 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP kill dandelions while leaving grass unharmed, because they target the growth hormones of broadleaf plants that grasses don't share. On temperature our two sources agree on the ceiling and disagree on the floor, which is worth knowing rather than averaging: Maryland Extension says apply only when daily air temperatures will be between 65 and 85°F, while Colorado State says a calm, clear day with air temperature between 50 and 85°F. Both warn about the top end — Maryland because the herbicide is more likely to volatilize and damage sensitive plants, Colorado because above 90°F volatilization injury to other plants in the landscape becomes likely. Treat 85°F as the hard ceiling both agree on, and read your own label, which governs either way.
What is the best dandelion killer?
There is no single best bottle, and the month you apply it matters more than the label on it. Dandelion is a perennial with a taproot, so what you need is a systemic broadleaf herbicide that travels down into that root — the standard three-way combinations of 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP all do this. Will vinegar kill dandelions without killing grass?
No. Horticultural vinegar is non-selective — it burns everything it touches, including your grass, and usually doesn't kill the dandelion's taproot. The plant regrows within weeks while the surrounding turf stays damaged.
When is the best time to spray dandelions?
Fall is the most effective window. Dandelions pull nutrients — and herbicide — down into their taproot ahead of winter, so autumn applications kill the root, not just the leaves. Spring spraying works but often needs a follow-up.
Should I pull dandelions or spray them?
