Best Lawn Sprinkler: Buy the Shape, Then the Trips
Iowa State names four types and each one over-waters somewhere. Match the pattern to your lawn's shape, then count how many times you will have to move it.

Four types, not two
Most buying guides compare oscillating against impact and stop. Iowa State lists four, and the two that get left out are the two that solve the hardest cases:
- Oscillating — “a horizontal tube which has several outlets along it” that “turns slowly back and forth, applying water in a rectangular pattern.” High fine fan, falls gently.
- Impact — “sends out a stream of water that strikes a pin or hammer, breaking the water into droplets and causing the sprinkler head to turn in a full or partial circle.” Low heavy stream, longer throw.
- Fixed or spot — sprinklers that “don’t move” and water a set shape: Iowa State lists “a circle, semicircle, square, or rectangle.” For small awkward corners.
- Traveling — “follow the hose across big lawns.”
Match the pattern to the lawn’s shape before anything else. A rectangular back garden is an oscillating job: the pattern is the shape of the job, and the gentle fall is also the right tool over new seed. An open lawn on a breezy site is an impact job, because a fine fan drifts and a heavy stream does not.
And every one of them over-waters somewhere. Iowa State’s finding is that the oscillating type applies “more water to the outer edge of the pattern than toward the center”, while the impact type applies “more water near the center of the pattern than at the outer edge.” Those biases are opposite, and neither is adjustable — it is the geometry of the mechanism. The fix is the same for both: “uniform water amounts can be achieved by overlapping the water patterns.”

Then count the trips
Here is the part nobody prices. A sprinkler does not water your lawn — a sprinkler waters one position, and you water your lawn by moving it. So the real specification on a large property is how many times you will walk out.
That is why the traveling sprinkler exists, and why it is the only type on the list whose selling point is not a pattern. It follows the hose you lay out, and Nelson rates one run at up to 13,500 square feet. What you are buying is the removal of three trips.
It matters more than it sounds, because trips are what actually get skipped. A large lawn rarely goes unwatered; it gets watered in one position for too long, because moving the sprinkler twice more was the part that did not happen. Deep and infrequent watering is a schedule that depends on you turning up, and the equipment that reduces how often you must turn up is the equipment that makes the schedule real.

The average depth is your minutes-to-inches conversion. Where a hose-end sprinkler stops being the answer
Past roughly half an acre of irrigated turf, or past the point where moving sprinklers reliably stops happening, in-ground irrigation with a controller is the honest answer — a different budget and usually a contractor. Everything above is not a lesser version of that. It is the right tool for the majority of lawns, which are small enough that a well-placed hose-end sprinkler beats an expensive system run badly.
