Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Work? The Testing Says No

Controlled tests have not found electronic repellers effective, animals habituate to sound, and the EPA number on the box is administrative — not an efficacy review.

There is a whole aisle built on one appealing idea: push a stake in the lawn, and the animal digging it up leaves on its own. No poison, no trap, no dead thing to deal with.

Three land-grant extension programmes and a federal consumer guide give a consistent answer, and it is worth reading before spending forty dollars. The tests do not support it, the animals get used to it, and the EPA number on the box is not the reassurance it looks like.

EPA Never Reviewed the One in Your Yard

Start here, because it explains how a product with no supporting evidence gets to market wearing what looks like a federal credential.

Under federal pesticide law a device is a distinct category from a pesticide. EPA quotes the FIFRA definition: any instrument or contrivance, other than a firearm, “intended for trapping, destroying, repelling, or mitigating any pest.” An ultrasonic repeller is squarely inside that — EPA files them under “Sound, Airwave, and Vibration Generators” and names ultrasonic insect and rodent repellers explicitly.

Then comes the difference that decides everything:

FIFRA does not require registration of devices.

And, from the same EPA guide, what that means in practice: manufacturers and sellers “do not submit their claims or efficacy and safety data to EPA (for approval or otherwise) before selling or distributing a device.”

So there is no premarket review of whether the thing works. Which brings us to the number on the box, and the sentence every buyer should read:

An EPA establishment number on device packaging does NOT indicate that the product has been reviewed for safety or efficacy by EPA.

EPA spells out the asymmetry: obtaining an establishment number is an administrative process, completed upon request, while a registration requires a fee for review of product specific data and takes far longer. One is paperwork. The other is scrutiny.

None of this makes the device illegal. EPA notes a device can be treated as misbranded if its claims are “false or misleading in any particular”, and that sellers are responsible for products performing as claimed. But that is enforcement afterwards, not approval beforehand — and it is why this shelf exists.

What the Controlled Tests Actually Found

Extension services hedge constantly. On this question they do not, and that is the signal worth paying attention to.

Washington State University Extension, on electronic devices for moles:

In controlled tests, none of the electronic repellers have been effective.

UC IPM, on rodents — and this page was revised in 2025, so it is not old guidance:

Rats are wary animals, easily frightened by unfamiliar or strange noises. However, they quickly become accustomed to repeated sounds, making the use of frightening devices—including high frequency and ultrasonic sounds—ineffective for controlling rats in homes and gardens.

Purdue Extension, in a publication titled Mole Control: Buyer Beware, listing what people are sold:

These include putting mothballs, human hair, razor blades, or chewing gum in their tunnels, or using pinwheels or ultrasonic devices to scare moles away. The reality is that these just do not work.

NC State Extension describes ultrasonic devices as unproven methods and sums up the whole genre in a sentence worth remembering: “There are no short cuts or magic wands when controlling moles.”

Four independent programmes, four different states, one conclusion. When extension services disagree about a product you usually see hedged wording on both sides. Here you do not.

Habituation Is Why Any Early Effect Fades

This is the part that explains the honest four-star reviews as well as the one-star ones, and it is not a claim about the product — it is a claim about animals.

UC IPM’s sentence contains the whole mechanism in two clauses. Rats are “easily frightened by unfamiliar or strange noises” — so a new device genuinely can produce a reaction. And they “quickly become accustomed to repeated sounds” — so the reaction stops.

That is habituation: an animal learns a repeated stimulus carries no consequence, and stops responding. A stake in a fixed position emitting on a fixed cycle is close to the ideal thing to habituate to. There is no consequence attached to the sound, ever, so the animal’s nervous system files it with wind and traffic.

Which predicts exactly the review pattern these products have:

  • Week one: something is different, the animal shifts activity, the buyer writes a positive review.
  • Week four: the ridges are back, and the buyer either writes a second review or assumes the battery died.

The effect was novelty, not deterrence. Novelty has a short half-life by definition. Rotating or randomising frequencies is the industry’s answer to this objection, and it has not changed what the controlled tests report.

For moles specifically there is an additional plausibility problem. Purdue records that a mole tunnels as much as 100 feet per day through soil, is nearly blind, and navigates by touch through a medium that is constantly transmitting vibration. A buzzing stake is not an alarming event in that environment; it is Tuesday.

What to Buy Instead

Identify the animal, then use the method that animal’s own extension service recommends. The methods are genuinely different because the animals are.

Why does the box have an EPA number if the device does not work?

Because it is the wrong kind of EPA number, and this is the single most useful thing to understand before buying one. EPA's consumer guide to pesticide devices is explicit: 'An EPA establishment number on device packaging does NOT indicate that the product has been reviewed for safety or efficacy by EPA.' Under FIFRA, devices — unlike pesticides — are not registered. Manufacturers generally do not submit efficacy or safety data to EPA before selling. A compliant device carries an establishment number and no registration number; a registered pesticide carries both. Getting an establishment number is an administrative request, not a review.

What is habituation and why does it defeat these devices?

Habituation is an animal learning that a repeated stimulus carries no consequence, and then ignoring it. UC IPM describes exactly this for rats: the first unfamiliar noise startles them, and repetition makes it background. A device that runs on a fixed cycle in a fixed spot is the ideal thing to habituate to. It is also why early demonstrations sometimes show a genuine short-term effect that disappears within days or weeks — the effect was novelty, not deterrence, and novelty is by definition temporary. Rotating frequencies is the manufacturer's answer to this, and it has not changed the controlled-test result.

Do vibrating or solar mole stakes work any better than ultrasonic ones?

No, and they are on the same lists. WSU Extension's ineffective list names vibrating windmills alongside electronic devices, mothballs and human hair. Purdue names pinwheels in the same sentence as ultrasonic devices. There is also a plausibility problem specific to moles: Purdue records that a mole can tunnel as much as 100 feet per day through soil, which is a constantly vibrating environment, and the animal is nearly blind and navigates by touch. A stake buzzing on a cycle is not an unusual signal in that world.

What should I buy instead of an ultrasonic repeller?

Identify the animal first, then use the method its own extension service recommends. For moles, that is trapping set on a confirmed ACTIVE tunnel — NC State notes several trap designs give good results if properly handled, and Purdue puts trapping first — or a bromethalin bait moulded as an artificial earthworm, which works because it matches what a mole actually eats. For rodents such as voles and rats, exclusion and trapping come first, and grain-based baits do work because those animals eat grain. The one thing every extension source agrees on is that the shortcut does not exist: NC State's summary is 'There are no short cuts or magic wands when controlling moles.'

Is it legal to sell a device that does not work?

Selling it is legal because no premarket efficacy review exists. Making false claims about it is a separate matter: EPA notes devices may be considered misbranded if labels or websites carry efficacy claims that are 'false or misleading in any particular', and says every producer or seller is responsible for ensuring products perform as claimed. That is enforcement after the fact rather than approval beforehand, which is why the shelf fills up with devices whose claims have never been checked by anyone.
