Lawn Fungus Identification: The Complete Guide
Identify lawn fungus by patch pattern, blade lesion and season — then match the disease to the fungicide chemistry that actually controls it.

A lawn does not simply “get fungus.” It gets one of about a dozen specific diseases, each with a different pathogen, a different weather trigger and — this is the part that costs homeowners money — a different correct response. Two of them are corrected with fertilizer. One is not controlled by ordinary fungicide at all. Several are not diseases in the first place.
The good news is that identification rarely requires a lab. Patch shape, the lesion on a single blade, the season and the moisture pattern narrow it to one or two candidates in a few minutes in the yard.
Is It Actually a Fungus?
More lawns are treated for disease than have one. Fungicide applied to a grub problem accomplishes nothing except delaying the real fix by two weeks, so work through these four impostors before you buy anything.
Drought stress follows your irrigation, not the wind. It shows up first on slopes, on the strip beside hot pavement and in the arc a sprinkler head misses, and the color change is gradual and even — blue-gray first, then straw. Disease patches have edges. Water a suspect area deeply and check it in 48 hours: real drought recovers, disease does not.
Grubs and chinch bugs produce irregular dying areas that pass the pull test in a way disease never does. Grab the turf and tug. If it lifts like a loose rug because the roots are chewed off, the problem is grubs. Chinch bug damage concentrates in the hottest, sunniest strip of the lawn and expands outward during heat waves.
Dog urine makes small, sharply defined dead circles — often with a ring of unusually dark, tall green grass around the outside, which is the nitrogen in the urine feeding the margin. No fungal disease produces that lush halo.
Mechanical and fertilizer damage are the quiet ones. A dull mower blade shreds rather than cuts, and the frayed tips brown across the whole lawn evenly within a day or two of mowing — no patches at all. Spilled or overlapped granular fertilizer burns in stripes and rectangles that match the way you walked the spreader.

The Four Questions That Name the Disease
Extension diagnostic keys all work from roughly these four observations. Answer them in order and you will usually be down to one or two candidates.
1. What is the pattern?
Step back and look at the whole lawn from a distance, then from an upstairs window if you have one. Damage sorts into four shapes, and each one rules most of the candidate list out immediately.

2. What does a single blade look like?
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that settles the diagnosis. Pull five or six blades from the edge of the affected area — the dead center is decomposed and tells you nothing.
Hold a blade up to the light and look for a lesion with a border. A living pathogen leaves a defined boundary between healthy and killed tissue, usually in a contrasting color. Uniform browning with no lesion points back to the impostors above.
3. What is the season and temperature?
Every turf pathogen has a temperature window, and outside it the disease simply stops. Cool wet spring and fall favor a different set of fungi than muggy July nights. If the weather does not match the candidate disease, the candidate is wrong — this single check eliminates most misdiagnoses.
4. How long do the blades stay wet?
Nearly every foliar turf disease requires extended leaf wetness — often ten hours or more of continuous moisture. That is why evening irrigation is the single most reliable way to cause disease, and why a shaded, still corner with poor air movement is where outbreaks start and recur.
The Common Lawn Diseases, by Signature
Brown patch and large patch (Rhizoctonia solani)
Roughly circular patches from six inches to several feet, sometimes with a darker “smoke ring” margin visible in morning dew. Blades at the edge carry irregular tan lesions with dark brown borders and pull free easily. Driven by warm nights and humidity — the same fungus is called large patch when it attacks warm-season turf in spring and fall as soil temperatures pass through the 70°F range. Dollar spot (Clarireedia species)
Small bleached spots about the size of a silver dollar, sometimes merging into larger blotches. The blade lesion is the giveaway: a bleached band straight across the blade, often pinched in the middle like an hourglass, with a reddish-brown border. In heavy morning dew you may see fine white cobwebby mycelium on the spots that disappears as the lawn dries. Favored by warm days, cool nights and heavy dew — and notably by low nitrogen, so a well-fed lawn gets it less.
Snow mold (gray and pink)
Matted, crusty circles revealed at snowmelt, grayish-white or salmon-pink. It grows under snow cover all winter, which is why the damage appears overnight in spring. Gray snow mold mostly damages leaf tissue; the pink form can kill crowns and needs overseeding afterward. Prevention is a late-fall job, not a spring one: snow mold treatment and prevention.
Red thread (Laetisaria fuciformis)
Irregular pink-tan patches, and on close inspection tiny coral-pink threads extending from the blade tips — unmistakable once you have seen it. Cool, humid weather on ryegrass and fescue. This is a nitrogen deficiency wearing a costume. It rarely kills anything, and feeding the lawn usually resolves it without any fungicide.
Rust (Puccinia species)
Orange-yellow powder on the blades that rubs off on your shoes and mower. Shows up in late summer and fall on slow-growing, underfed turf, especially newer seedings and shaded areas. Like red thread, the answer is usually nitrogen plus mowing frequently enough to remove infected tissue — not chemistry.
Leaf spot and melting out (Drechslera and Bipolaris species)
Diffuse thinning rather than patches, with small oval lesions on the blades carrying dark purple-black borders and pale centers. Common on Kentucky bluegrass in cool, wet spring and fall weather, and made worse by mowing too short and pushing heavy nitrogen. “Melting out” is the second phase, when the fungus moves into crowns and the stand thins visibly.
Pythium blight — the one that is not a fungus
Dark, greasy, water-soaked patches and streaks that often follow drainage lines or the path of a mower, with cottony gray mycelium visible in early morning. It appears in extreme heat with hot, humid nights and can destroy large areas in a day or two.
Two things make it a special case. It is caused by an oomycete, a water mold that is not a true fungus, so most common turf fungicides do not control it — it needs a targeted active ingredient such as mefenoxam, propamocarb or fosetyl-Al. And it moves faster than any other lawn disease, so it is the one situation where same-day action genuinely matters.
Fairy ring
Arcs or full circles of unusually dark green grass, sometimes with mushrooms, sometimes with a band of dead turf. The fungi involved are living on organic matter in the soil rather than parasitizing the grass, and the dead-band version is usually caused by soil that has become water-repellent, not by infection. Fungicides are unreliable here; aerating the ring and watering deeply — often with a wetting agent — does more.
Take-all root rot and summer patch
Yellow, thinning irregular patches that do not respond to foliar treatment, because the damage is below ground. Take-all root rot is a warm-season problem, notably on St. Augustine, with dark shortened roots and black strands visible on the stolons. Summer patch and necrotic ring spot are the cool-season equivalents on bluegrass and fine fescue, producing “frog-eye” rings with surviving grass in the middle. All of them need soil drenching rather than a foliar spray, plus a season of patience.

Fungicides: Chemistry, Not Brand Names
Shelf labels are marketing; the active ingredient is the product. Two distinctions decide whether an application works.
Contact versus systemic. Contact fungicides such as chlorothalonil sit on the leaf surface and protect only what they touch, so new growth is unprotected and rain shortens their life. Systemic (penetrant) products are taken up by the plant and keep working from the inside — this is what most homeowners want, because it survives mowing and irrigation.
Chemical class, and why rotation is not optional. Fungicides are grouped by mode of action. The two classes that matter on a home lawn:
- DMI / triazoles — propiconazole, myclobutanil, tebuconazole. Strong curative action on an outbreak that is already visible. High summer rates can temporarily slow turf growth.
- QoI / strobilurins — azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin. Longer preventive residual, up to about four weeks, and easy to apply as a granular. Also the class most prone to resistance when used repeatedly on its own.
Applying the same class over and over selects for the strains that survive it, and the product appears to “stop working.” Alternate classes between applications — azoxystrobin, then propiconazole, then back — and you keep both of them effective.
Preventive versus curative rates. Most labels list two rates. The curative rate is roughly double and is for disease you can already see; the preventive rate is for a lawn with a documented history entering its risk window. Treat a buffer of at least three feet beyond every visible patch edge, because the active fungus is always wider than the symptoms.

The Diagnose-Then-Treat Sequence
Rule out the impostorsBefore buying anything
Pull test for grubs, check the pattern against your sprinkler coverage, look for the dark green halo of dog urine, and note whether browning appeared right after mowing. Most suspected fungus is one of these.
Pull blades from the patch marginSame day
Six blades from the living edge, held up to the light. A lesion with a contrasting border confirms disease and usually names it. No lesion means look at the impostors again.
Match the weather to the pathogenSame day
Check the last week of night temperatures and humidity against the candidate disease's range. A disease outside its window is the wrong answer no matter how well the patch shape fits.
Treat only what warrants treatmentWithin 24–48 hours of confirming
Red thread and rust get nitrogen. Fairy ring gets aeration and deep watering. Active brown patch, dollar spot and gray leaf spot get a systemic fungicide at the curative rate, applied three feet past every visible edge.
Cut off the leaf wetnessThe same week
Move all irrigation to 4–8 AM so blades dry before nightfall, skip watering entirely in humid weeks, and prune or thin whatever blocks airflow over the patch. Without this the fungicide is a rental, not a fix.
Rotate the second application14–28 days later, if pressure persists
Switch chemical class rather than repeating the same active ingredient. Skip the follow-up entirely if the weather has moved out of the pathogen's range — there is nothing to treat.
Repair the dead areasAfter the outbreak stops expanding
Rake out matted debris so light and air reach the crowns. Warm-season turf usually creeps back in on its own; cool-season stands need overseeding in the fall establishment window.

Prevention: The Conditions You Actually Control
You cannot remove the pathogens — they live in soil and thatch in essentially every lawn, year-round. Disease only expresses when conditions allow it, and conditions are the part you own.
- Water at dawn, deeply, and only when needed. Moving irrigation from evening to 4–8 AM is the highest-impact change available, because it directly removes the extended leaf wetness nearly every pathogen requires.
- Get nitrogen right in both directions. Heavy fast-release nitrogen in disease season produces the lush tissue brown patch and pythium exploit; starving the lawn invites dollar spot, red thread and rust. Slow-release, on a schedule, is the answer to both.
- Keep thatch under half an inch. Thatch shelters the fungus over winter and holds the moisture it needs. Core-aerate annually and dethatch when the layer gets thick.
- Mow high with a sharp blade. Every torn blade tip is an entry wound, and scalping stresses the plant into susceptibility. Bag clippings while an outbreak is active so you are not redistributing infected tissue.
- Fix the shaded, still corner. A patch that returns to the same spot every year is telling you about airflow and sun, not about your fungicide. Prune it open, or accept that spot will need preventive treatment annually.
- Choose resistant cultivars when you reseed. Disease resistance varies widely between varieties of the same species, and it is free to select for at seeding time. Will lawn fungus go away on its own?

Why did my fungicide stop working after a few applications?
Repeating one chemical class selects for resistant strains of the pathogen — strobilurins such as azoxystrobin are especially prone to it. The fix is rotation: alternate between chemical classes, for example azoxystrobin one application and propiconazole the next, rather than reapplying the same active ingredient. Also check that the diagnosis is right, because pythium blight is an oomycete and most turf fungicides do not control it at all.
