Lawn Disease After Flooding: What Follows the Water
Flooding moves the pathogen, stresses the plant and leaves the leaf wet. The hour thresholds that trigger Pythium and brown patch, and why nitrogen cuts both ways. Guide for Michigan, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

A lawn that came through a flood and then developed patches two weeks later has not had bad luck twice. The second event is a consequence of the first, and the mechanism is specific enough to be worth understanding — because it tells you what to watch for, when, and which of the things you are about to do will make it worse.
This is the disease half of lawn recovery after flooding, which covers the submersion clock, the silt rule and the rescue-or-replant decision.
Three Things Happen at Once
The water moves the pathogen. Maryland Extension notes that Pythium “spreads easily through rain splash, irrigation water, and mowing equipment.” A flood is irrigation water on a scale nobody chose, running across the whole property and pooling wherever the grade sends it. Whatever was in one corner is now distributed.
The plant is already losing. UGA describes what saturated soil does — oxygen displaced from the pores, root growth restricted — and then names the consequence directly: the further problem with excess water is “the diseases that thrive in extremely moist conditions and take advantage of the stressed plants.” A root system that has been suffocating for three days is not defending anything.
The canopy stays wet. This is the part that actually triggers infection, and it is measured in hours rather than inches of rain.
Leaf Wetness Is the Trigger
Turf pathogens are counted in hours of continuous leaf wetness, and both of the diseases most likely to follow a flood have published thresholds.

Whether your weather clears those two bars is a local question, and these are the numbers to read them against. Humidity here: Moderate — humid July and August, with lake-effect cloud and snow on the western side.
And when the water arrives in the first place: Even (~32–36 in/year) with heavy lake-effect snow on the west side and prolonged winter snow cover inland.
No verdict attached to that on purpose — a published threshold is 14 hours above 90 percent with nights over 68°F, and a state-average description cannot tell you what your enclosed back corner did last week. Read your own conditions against the table, not our summary of the state against it.
A flooded lawn in summer clears both bars without difficulty. That is why the window to watch is roughly the fortnight after the water goes — long enough for the infection to establish and for the symptoms to become visible.
Which disease you get depends on your grass
Clemson splits it cleanly:
- Brown patch affects “cool-season grasses (tall fescue, ryegrass, bluegrass, and bentgrass)”.
- Large patch — the same fungus, different name and season — affects “centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and St Augustinegrass”.
Which of the two it is in Michigan
The dominant lawn grass here is Kentucky Bluegrass, which sits on Clemson's cool-season list — so the patch disease to expect after a flood is BROWN patch, not large patch. They are the same fungus under two names, and the practical difference is the season: brown patch runs in summer heat, which is also when a flood clears the leaf-wetness bar most easily.
On Pythium the news is better: Maryland puts Kentucky Bluegrass in the more tolerant group rather than the most affected one. Tolerant is not immune, and the shape of the outbreak is still the tell — but the odds here favour the patch disease above over Pythium blight.
One honest caveat: none of this page's three diseases is on our own high-pressure list for Michigan. What is: Snow mold (gray and pink, after prolonged snow cover); Necrotic ring spot (Kentucky Bluegrass, worst on sod); Dollar spot; Red thread; Summer patch. Not all of those are water-driven, but they are what is already on site when a flood weakens the stand, and they are the more likely answer here than the diseases above.
Pythium blight has its own susceptibility order. Maryland reports that “creeping bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, and annual bluegrass are most affected, whereas Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue are more tolerant.” A perennial ryegrass lawn that has just been under water in warm weather is the highest-risk combination on this page.
The mixed-lawn problem, in Michigan
The other grasses in use here: Perennial Ryegrass; Fine Fescue (shade and low-input); Turf-type Tall Fescue.
And note Perennial Ryegrass on that list. Even where it is not the dominant grass, it is at the top of Maryland's Pythium order — so an overseeded or patched area of it is the part of a flooded lawn most likely to go first, which is also a useful thing to know before you treat the whole property.
How long any of it stays wet is a soil question, and ours here reads: Fast on the sands, which is why Michigan's fertilizer guidance is written around leaching; slow on the Detroit/Thumb clays. Leaf wetness is counted in hours, so a profile that holds water is a profile that keeps the canopy above the threshold for longer after the same storm.
What Pythium looks like
Maryland’s description is specific enough to identify from: “small, circular, water-soaked lesions that appear on the leaves and stems” with “a greasy appearance”, developing into patches “a few inches to several feet in diameter” that are dark brown to black. Blades inside a patch stick together and feel mushy, and cottony fungal growth can be visible early in the morning before the dew burns off.
The post-flood tell is the shape of the outbreak. Pythium develops along drainage patterns — so if the damage traces the path the water took across your lawn rather than appearing as scattered independent circles, that is a strong hint about what you are looking at. The Nitrogen Conflict
Post-flood advice contains one genuine contradiction, and it is better to name it than to quietly follow whichever source you read second.
UGA’s recovery guidance is half a pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet to encourage the lawn to grow back. Clemson’s disease guidance is that the brown patch fungus “readily attacks the lush growth of grass, which nitrogen promotes”, and advises against high nitrogen rates during the vulnerable window.
Both are correct, and the resolution is in the words modest and when:
- A half-pound recovery rate is not a growth-pushing rate. The problem Clemson describes is high nitrogen producing soft, lush tissue.
- If warm humid weather has already produced active patches, feeding into it makes the disease worse first. Deal with the outbreak, then feed.
- If flooding lands late in the season, article one’s timing caution applies for a different reason entirely — growth that cannot harden off before cold weather.
Where that leaves the recovery feed in Michigan
Our research records the fertilization programme here as: April through October, and MSU is specific that applications should go down before November — later nitrogen leaches over winter rather than feeding the grass. A flood does not move that window, and "late in the season" means late relative to it rather than to a national month.
It may not even be your call. What we have verified for Michigan: Michigan's Fertilizer Act (PA 299 of 2010, in force since 2012) prohibits phosphorus fertilizer on lawns except where a soil test from the past three years confirms the need, for establishing a new lawn by seed or sod, or for specific organic and manure products applied at the rates the law sets out. No fertilizer application when the soil is frozen or saturated with water. A recovery feed landing inside a blackout is not a judgement about disease risk — it is prohibited, and the flood does not lift it.
What To Do, In Order
1. Stay off it and mow it last. Maryland’s instruction for infected areas is to “mow the infected area last” so the mower does not carry the pathogen into clean turf. Storm cleanup is exactly when equipment crosses a property repeatedly, so this is the cheapest control measure available and the easiest to forget.
2. Fix the wetness, not the fungus. Clemson’s irrigation guidance is to “water the lawn early in the morning”, and Maryland’s is to avoid “irrigating during the evening or night hours” — both for the same reason: watering at the wrong time extends leaf wetness past the threshold. Maryland also recommends improving air circulation by pruning branches and thinning stands, which matters more in the enclosed corners where flood water sits longest.
If the same area is wet after every ordinary rain and not just after this storm, the disease is a symptom of drainage rather than of the flood — waterlogged lawn has the test that tells you which.
3. Identify before you spray. Clemson is unusually direct about the ceiling here: “Fungicides can be difficult to rely upon for controlling brown patch and large patch in the home lawn, but regular applications can vastly improve the lawn appearance.” That is an honest statement of what a homeowner should expect — appearance management, not eradication.
It also matters what you are treating. Pythium is a water mold rather than a true fungus, and products sold for brown patch are not automatically active against it. Buying the wrong active ingredient is the most common way this goes wrong.
