The pump type is the specification nobody compares and the one that decides whether your sprayer survives the products you actually own. A diaphragm pump handles wettable powders; a piston pump is abraded by them.
Our Verdict
If any of your products is a wettable granule or wettable powder — and several of the best turf herbicides are — this is the pump you want. Suspended solids act as an abrasive on a piston seal, which is why piston sprayers develop pressure loss after a season of mixing WG products. A diaphragm pump moves the liquid without a sliding seal in the abrasive path. The trade is maximum pressure: a diaphragm unit will not reach the 150 PSI a good piston sprayer manages, which matters if you need reach rather than coverage.
