The same trap without the wedge and probe. Correct as a second trap for a big tunnel network, and the wrong first purchase.

Our Verdict

Good hardware, slightly wrong package for a first-time buyer. The trap itself is the same mechanism as the full set and works the same way, so if you already own the probe and want to work two runs at once, this is the cheaper way to add one. As a first purchase it saves under ten dollars and drops the tool that decides the outcome: locating a live tunnel. Extension guidance is consistent that trapping works when it is set on an ACTIVE run — press a length of ridge flat, mark it, and set only where it is pushed back up within a day or two. Without a probe most people guess, catch nothing, and blame the trap. Buy the set first, then add this. Not usable in Washington — see the state note.

✅ Pros

  • Same trap mechanism as the full set, for less
  • No poison, no re-entry interval, nothing a pet can ingest
  • Reusable indefinitely
  • Sensible way to cover two active runs at the same time

⚠️ Cons

  • No probe, so nothing helps you confirm the tunnel is active — the step that decides success
  • Illegal to USE in Washington under Initiative 713 — see the state note
  • Saves under ten dollars over the set that includes the tools
  • Mechanical kill trap: site it deliberately
  • Prevents nothing long term

Where our facts come from

Correctly carries no EPA registration

Adjuvants, dyes, devices and minimum-risk products are not registered pesticides, so an empty registration number here is right rather than missing.

What we found when we read it

Same as the trapping set: a mechanical device, not a registered pesticide. No registration number exists to record. See gopherhawk-trapping-set.

Where this page and the container disagree, the container wins — the label is the legal authority on rates and restrictions. How to read one yourself.

Where This Product Matters

Matched against each state's actual disease, weed and pest pressure.

Moles along field edges
Moles (heavy in soft, damp valley soil)

⚖️ Do not buy this to use here. WSU Extension records that Initiative 713, effective December 7, 2000, bans the USE of any trap other than common rat and mouse traps that holds, pierces, grasps or pinches a body part (RCW 77.15.194). Buying one is legal; using it to capture an animal is not.
