The three-position depth adjustment is the feature that matters, and the one the cheaper machines omit. Dethatching goes wrong by going too deep, and a fixed-depth machine gives you no way to be gentle.
More motor and more width than the corded Sun Joe machines, but the reason to pay the difference is the depth adjustment. Set too deep, a dethatcher tears out living stolons and rhizomes along with the thatch, and on a slow-recovering grass that damage lasts a season. Being able to start shallow and go deeper only if the first pass under-delivers is the difference between a renovation and an injury. It is corded, like everything at this price, so the cable is a constant on an obstacle-heavy lawn.

Lawn Diseases
Penn State: fungicides applied at the melting-out stage usually produce little improvement. Rutgers names the three causes — and all three are things you do.

Product Reviews
Clemson's dethatching machine cuts half an inch into the soil. A corded consumer unit does not. Measure the layer first — then decide whether to buy or rent.

Lawn Care Guides
Penn State rates tall fescue's recovery as only fair — it is bunch-type and does not creep. Half the thickening advice online assumes a grass that spreads.

Lawn Care Guides
Under half an inch, thatch helps. The roots live in it, so the machine rips plants out. Illinois names core aeration and topdressing as the fix instead.
