The three-position depth adjustment is the feature that matters, and the one the cheaper machines omit. Dethatching goes wrong by going too deep, and a fixed-depth machine gives you no way to be gentle.

Our Verdict

More motor and more width than the corded Sun Joe machines, but the reason to pay the difference is the depth adjustment. Set too deep, a dethatcher tears out living stolons and rhizomes along with the thatch, and on a slow-recovering grass that damage lasts a season. Being able to start shallow and go deeper only if the first pass under-delivers is the difference between a renovation and an injury. It is corded, like everything at this price, so the cable is a constant on an obstacle-heavy lawn.

✅ Pros

  • Three-position depth adjustment lets you start shallow, which is how dethatching should be approached
  • 13-amp motor and 14 inch width cover ground faster than the 12–13 amp, 12.6–15 inch alternatives
  • Two-in-one with quick-release attachments: both the dethatching reel and the scarifier reel are included, as is a grass catcher
  • Different brand and design from the Sun Joe units, which matters if you want a genuine comparison rather than two sizes of the same thing

⚠️ Cons

  • Corded, so the cable has to be managed around every obstacle
  • Costs more than the corded Sun Joe machines
  • Most lawns do not need dethatching — Clemson notes a layer up to half an inch benefits the lawn, so measure first
  • Push-only, with no self-propulsion, and a 14 inch path means a lot of passes on anything beyond a small lawn
