Our Verdict

Read this against the two specifications rather than against the category. Clemson names the materials directly for an enclosed bed: insect- and decay-resistant wood such as cypress, redwood, or cedar — and for treated lumber, AWPA labelled UC4A or higher. Western Red Cedar is the first list, and because it is untreated and unstained the UC4A question does not arise at all. The width is the more interesting match. Three feet is inside the 3-to-4-foot range BOTH sources give, and both give it for the same reason: you must be able to reach the middle from either side without stepping in, because the compaction a raised bed prevents is most of why it exists. A wider bed gives that back. On depth, 11 inches sits inside Utah State's 6-to-12 and above Clemson's 4-to-8 — which per our own guidance puts it in the case where the bed IS the root zone rather than an addition to usable ground beneath. If you dug a test hole and the spade went in easily, you are paying for depth you did not need. Two costs to be clear about. At roughly $11 per square foot of bed this is expensive against cedar boards and an afternoon, and what you are buying is the joinery — no fasteners to loosen, which is the part of a wooden bed that actually fails. And 11 inches of depth is about 16 cubic feet of fill, which at our own compost guidance is a lot of material: budget the filling, not just the frame.
