Our Verdict
Levelling a lawn fails for one boring reason: material gets piled instead of spread. Clemson caps a topdressing pass at no more than half an inch, because the grass has to grow up through it, and half an inch is genuinely hard to judge with a shovel and a garden rake — a garden rake's tines part the canopy and drag material into ridges rather than levelling it. A lute is a flat plate dragged across the surface: it pushes material off the high spots into the low ones and leaves a consistent thin layer, which is the actual mechanical job. It is also the tool for working compost down between the blades rather than leaving it lying on top, which is the difference between topdressing and smothering. Nothing sophisticated here — a stainless plate and an adjustable handle — and the reason to own one is that the alternative is not a cheaper tool but a worse result.
