Rated on the mechanism rather than the reviews. Aeration works by REMOVING a plug so the surrounding soil has somewhere to expand into; that is why extension services specify hollow-tine core aerators, typically 3–4 inches long. A solid spike removes nothing — it displaces soil sideways and downward, and university extension guidance is explicit that spike aerators can cause more compaction by pressing soil together around the holes. Extension material also warns directly that equipment with solid tines or spikes should not be mistaken for core aerating equipment. So the honest verdict is that these do not do the job named on the package, and on a genuinely compacted clay lawn they work against you.
