Our Verdict
The reason to spend four times the mechanical timer's price is not automation for its own sake, it is that new seed and established lawn want opposite watering. Seed needs the top half inch damp, which means short and frequent; established turf wants deep and infrequent. Two independently programmed zones let you run both off one tap without choosing. The rain delay is the other genuinely useful feature, because the most common irrigation mistake is watering the day after a storm. Two honest caveats. It is battery-powered, and a dead battery in a hose box is a real failure mode — check it at the start of each season and do not leave it running unattended for weeks. And where your municipality assigns watering days, program to those days rather than to what the lawn would prefer; several states we cover have exactly that restriction.
