Best Grass Seed for High Traffic: Wear Is Not Recovery
Perennial rye takes the wear but cannot repair. Bluegrass repairs but wears faster. No single cool-season species does both, which is why a traffic lawn is a mix.

Seed, feed and a water-holding mulch in one — and the mulch is the part you are actually paying the premium for.
The single hardest thing about repairing a bare spot is not the seed, it is keeping the top half-inch damp. Clemson states the failure precisely: if the surface dries out at any time after the seeds have begun to swell and before roots develop, many of the seedlings will die. That is a window measured in hours on a hot afternoon, and it is why most patch attempts fail. What this product sells is a mulch that swells with water and holds it around the seed, which directly attacks that failure — genuinely useful if you cannot water two or three times a day, which describes most people with a job. Price it honestly, though: per square foot it is several times the cost of seed and a bag of compost, and it does nothing about WHY the spot went bare. A patch that failed because of dog urine, a buried rock or deep shade will fail again with better mulch on it. Buy it for convenience on a spot whose cause you have already dealt with.
