Our Verdict
The premise is sound and the limits are worth knowing before you buy. A thin lawn needs more plants, better soil contact for them, and something to feed them, and this bag carries all three so you make one pass instead of three. Where it genuinely earns its place is a bunch-type lawn — tall fescue or perennial ryegrass — because Penn State rates tall fescue's recovery as only fair and says perennial ryegrass does not form rhizomes or stolons at all. Those lawns cannot close their own gaps at any level of care, so adding seed IS the treatment rather than a supplement to it. On a Kentucky bluegrass, bermuda or St. Augustine lawn the calculation is different: those spread on their own, and if they are thin something is stopping them, which usually means mowing height, compaction or shade rather than a shortage of seed. Buying this for a spreading grass can work, but it treats the symptom while the limit is still in place.
