Well made, popular, and the wrong mechanism — solid spikes press soil sideways instead of removing it.

Our Verdict

We have to be straight about this one because our own aeration guide is unambiguous. A spike aerator has solid points, not hollow tubes, so the soil is displaced sideways and pressed together rather than removed. The effect on compaction is to ADD to it around each hole, and a hole with compressed walls is not an open channel — water and roots still cannot pass through the collar you just created. Extension guidance is equally blunt that spikers bring little thatch or soil to the surface and have limited effectiveness at either breaking down thatch or reducing compaction. None of that is a criticism of the build quality, which is fine, or of the price. It is a criticism of buying this to solve compaction, which is the reason almost everyone buys an aerator. If your soil is genuinely compacted, the coring aerator above or a rented machine is the tool. If it is not compacted, you do not need either.

✅ Pros

  • Solidly built and much faster to push than a two-tine coring tool
  • Cheaper than a coring aerator and far cheaper than renting
  • A genuine improvement on aerator sandals, which are worse still
  • Can help liquid products or seed reach soil through a thick thatch mat

⚠️ Cons

  • Solid spikes displace soil sideways and add compaction around each hole
  • Brings almost no soil or thatch to the surface, so it does not speed thatch breakdown
  • Marketed for the exact problem — compaction — that it makes slightly worse
  • Buying it usually means the actual job still has not been done
