Fire Ants in Lawns: Kill the Colony, Not the Mound

A fire ant mound goes quiet within hours of being drenched, and that feels like a win. Then a new mound appears a few feet away.

Nothing went wrong with the product. The problem is that a mound is not a colony — it is the visible chimney of a nest that extends well past it. UGA is direct about what happens when you treat only the surface: ants survive by foraging underground, and the treatment risks causing mound relocation.

So the entire strategy has to change. You are not trying to kill the ants you can see. You are trying to reach the one you cannot.

In Virginia the first question is which county

Unlike the Deep South, this is not a statewide pest here — it is a regulated one, and the regulated area is a list of counties that keeps changing. Our Virginia entry records it as “Imported fire ants, including the hybrid Virginia Tech publishes on separately, under a VDACS quarantine that has expanded in 2019, 2022 and again on 27 May 2025 and now covers 18 counties and 15 independent cities rather than the whole state”.

Check the current map before you plan anything. A quarantine boundary from two years ago may no longer be where you are — the regulated area is redrawn as the range moves, not on a fixed schedule, and the office that redraws it for Virginia is Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Pesticide Services.

A find outside the line is a report, not just a treatment. That is how the map gets redrawn. It also means the useful local reference is not this page but Virginia Tech Turfgrass at Virginia Cooperative Extension, which publishes against the current boundary rather than against a national average.

And the regulated articles matter to you even if the ants do not. Sod, soil, hay and soil-moving equipment leaving a quarantined county need certification — which is exactly the list a homeowner touches when buying turf or having a landscaper bring soil in. In Virginia that lands on Tall Fescue, where sod is a normal way to establish a lawn, so ask where the pallet came from.

So read the method below as conditional on the answer to the county question. Inside the line, the two-step bait programme is the right programme, timed to Virginia's own season: last frost around Mid-May (mountains) to early April (Tidewater), first frost around Early October (mountains) to early November (Tidewater and Virginia Beach), with the two applications sitting inside that span rather than at its edges. Outside the line, a stinging ant in the lawn here is more likely to be something ordinary — and the other pests our Virginia research lists are White grubs, Hunting billbug, Fall armyworms.

And if you are inside it, the two applications land on a calendar that is already busy. These are Virginia's own spring and autumn tasks from our state research — the bait goes alongside them, and the one conflict to plan around is that bait must stay dry while most of this list wants watering in:

  • Spring: Pre-emergent mid-March in the Tidewater to late April in the mountains, on soil temperature
  • Spring: Fescue takes 0.5–0.7 lb of nitrogen in April and again in May — no more per month
  • Autumn: Seed and overseed fescue mid-August through mid-October
  • Autumn: The main feedings run September, October and November

Why mound drenching fails

It is worth being precise about the failure, because the product is not defective — it is being asked to do something it cannot.

A contact insecticide poured onto a mound kills the workers it touches. The nest extends below and around the visible mound, the queen sits deep inside it, and UGA notes ants survive such treatments by foraging underground. What often follows is worse than nothing: the colony moves. You now have a quiet patch of lawn and a new mound somewhere you have not looked, with the reproductive core untouched.

NC State records the same outcome from the other end, as something you can watch happen: “When you treat individual mounds, it is possible that satellite mounds may appear within a few days around the original mound.” Within a few days — so if you drenched a mound last week and there are two smaller ones near it now, that is not bad luck or a new invasion. That is the same colony.

That is the trap. The treatment that produces the most satisfying immediate result is the one least likely to end the problem.

The two-step method

The approach extension programmes across the South converged on is deliberately unsatisfying in the short term.

    Not on the mounds. Across the treated area, so foraging workers from every colony encounter it, including the ones whose mounds you have not found. UGA's figure for a properly applied broadcast is roughly 90% suppression of ants in the treated area.

  2. Wait. Several days or moreDays, not hours

    This is the step that gets skipped. Bait has to be found, carried in, shared through the colony and reach the queen. Treating a mound during this window kills the workers that were doing that job for you.

  3. Then treat the nuisance mounds that remainAfter the wait

    UGA's wording is to treat nuisance colonies — those in sensitive or high-traffic areas — rather than every mound on the property. Individual mound treatments are for the ones you cannot live with, not for the population.

  4. Re-treat on mound count, not on the calendarWhen they come back

    Repeat the broadcast when ants reinvade and mound numbers reach about 20 to 30 per acre. That is a threshold, and it means the schedule is set by your neighbours' untreated land as much as by anything you do.

For step two, the choice is between formulations rather than strategies. Dusts need no water and act quickly but leave a visible surface residue. Liquid drenches generally clear a mound within hours and leave very little residue behind. Either is a reasonable answer to a mound beside a doorway; neither is an answer to a yard full of them.

Timing decides everything

Bait only works if ants are out looking for food, and that is a temperature question rather than a date on a calendar.

UGA’s guidance is to avoid applying when ground temperatures are lower than 65–70°F or higher than 90°F. In summer that pushes the application to late afternoon or early evening, when the surface has cooled but the ants are still active.

NC State frames the same window as a season rather than an hour, and the two fit together: “Chemical applications are most effective when fire ants become active in late spring and early fall when air temperatures are between 70-95°F.” So late spring and early autumn are the months, and inside those months the hour is decided by the surface temperature UGA gives. Midsummer is not a good time to bait, which is exactly when most people notice the mounds.

Two more specifics from NC State worth having before you spread anything. On placement: “Foraging ants exit the nest along the outside base of the mound. Place product within a 2 ft radius around mound.” Not on top of it — around it, where the workers actually walk. And on patience: bait is “slow-acting compared to mound drenches”, with products working “in about 3-14 days.” Nothing visible in the first week is the normal course, not a failed application.

There is a test that removes the guesswork entirely, and it costs two minutes:

Leave a small pile of bait — one to two tablespoons — on the ground in the area you plan to treat. If ants are actively removing it 10 to 30 minutes later, they are foraging and the application is worth making. If the pile is untouched, come back at a different hour.

That single check is the difference between a bait application and a bait donation.

And there is a version you can run before buying anything at all. Clemson’s test uses food you already have:

“Place a few regular, plain, greasy potato chips in different areas of the landscape or lawn. After 20 to 30 minutes, check the potato chips for fire ant activity. If fire ants are present at the potato chips, the fire ants are foraging, and the bait can be applied.”

Same logic, no purchase required — which makes it the better first step of the two. The greasy part is not incidental: bait is pesticide carried on soybean oil, so an oily chip is the closest household stand-in for the thing you are about to spread.

Clemson also puts the season on a calendar rather than leaving it to inference, and attaches its own temperature band:

“Make two annual bait applications; one in the spring and one in the fall. Apply baits in late May/early June and again in late September/early October. Ideally, soil surface temperatures should be between 70° and 85°F.”

Two applications a year, not a response to mounds appearing. Those dates are South Carolina’s; further north the pair moves later in spring and earlier in autumn, further south the reverse, and the 70–85°F surface reading is what tells you which.

Which is a question you can answer locally. Virginia runs from a last frost around Mid-May (mountains) to early April (Tidewater) to a first frost around Early October (mountains) to early November (Tidewater and Virginia Beach) — so the spring application sits after the ground has warmed past the low end of that band, and the autumn one before it drops back through it. Local humidity — High in summer, and slower to dry in the Tidewater and along the rivers — also matters for the third rule below, because a dry-lawn requirement is harder to satisfy where afternoon storms are routine. And the midsummer gap is not optional: Fairly even (~43 in/year) with humid summers and thunderstorms is the pattern here, and the weeks when mounds are most obvious are the weeks bait works worst. It sits inside UGA’s wider 65–90°F limit — read Clemson’s band as the target and UGA’s as the edges.

One more thing that explains a common surprise. Clemson: fire ants “mate when the temperature is between 70 °F and 95 °F, usually within 24 hours of a rain.” Which is why fresh mounds seem to appear overnight after a storm — they are not new colonies arriving, they are existing ones pushing up soil while conditions suit, plus newly mated queens founding nests. It is also why the week after heavy rain feels like the treatment failed when it did not.

The one rule people break

Do not water it in.

Every other granular product on a lawn wants irrigation afterwards — fertilizer, pre-emergent, grub preventive. This one is the exception, and the reason is that bait is food. UGA’s instruction is to apply when the ground and grass are dry. Wet bait loses its attractiveness, the workers stop carrying it, and the application achieves nothing.

So: check the forecast, skip the irrigation cycle, treat a dry lawn. If rain arrives within a few hours of application, plan on treating again.

What to buy

Two local checks before the products. Virginia carries its own rules on top of the label — Virginia's nutrient management standards cap cool-season turf at 0.7 lb of available nitrogen per active growing month and 3.5 lb for the season — and Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Pesticide Services is the office that administers them. And check the turf: the dominant lawn grass in Virginia is Tall Fescue, which matters because a broadcast bait goes over the whole lawn and a contact insecticide's label does not cover every species.

The product category to look for is a bait, and the label will say so — the tell is that it is granular, does not want watering in, and talks about the colony or the queen rather than instant results.

One honest note on our own catalogue: several granular lawn insecticides list fire ants among their targets, and used as a whole-lawn treatment they will reduce the workers you can see without reaching the queens. That is the mound-drenching mistake at a larger scale. If you buy one product for fire ants, buy the bait.

This is suppression, not eradication

Worth setting expectations honestly, because the alternative is feeling like the treatment failed when it did exactly what it could.

Around 90% suppression is what a good broadcast achieves. The remainder, plus new queens flying in from every untreated property nearby, is why UGA frames re-treatment as a response to reinvasion at 20–30 mounds per acre rather than an annual date. Fire ants are a boundary problem: your lawn is as treatable as your neighbours’ land allows.

That also makes it one of the few lawn problems where coordinating with neighbours genuinely changes the outcome — broadcast baiting works best across larger contiguous areas for exactly that reason.

And about the grass

Fire ants are mostly not a turf disease. They sting, their mounds damage mower blades, and a lawn with mounds through it is a lawn children and dogs cannot use. Their tunnelling can dry out roots locally, but the grass is not being eaten the way it is by armyworms or grubs.

So the reason to treat is what the ants do to the people using the lawn. If your grass is also thinning or browning, that is a separate diagnosis — start with why is my lawn yellow and work through it on its own merits rather than assuming the ants are responsible.
