When to Apply Pre-Emergent: The 55°F Rule Is Misread

55°F is when you spray, not when crabgrass germinates. Purdue puts germination at 57–64°F and the flood at 73°F. Confusing the two is why people are late.

There is one number everyone repeats about pre-emergent timing, and most people are applying it to the wrong thing.

55°F is when you spray. It is not when crabgrass germinates.

Purdue puts germination at 57 to 64°F, and the real flood of seedlings at 73°F and above. So if you have been treating 55°F as the moment crabgrass wakes up, you have been concluding you still have time — at exactly the point you should already be applying.

If you are already late, the chemistry can change

Prodiamine has no post-emergence activity at all: miss the window and the application is spent. Dithiopyr is the exception, and the claim is on its label rather than in its marketing — “This Product Will Control Crabgrass if Applied Before It Emerges and Up to 4 Weeks After It Emerges.”

Read the window as four weeks after germination, not four weeks after you noticed. By the time crabgrass is visible in a lawn it is often already past that, which is why this buys you a margin rather than a reprieve. The Number Everyone Misreads

Put the two figures side by side and the confusion resolves itself.

The application number is lower than the germination number on purpose. MSU is explicit that the herbicide must be applied before the soil reaches the germination range, because a pre-emergent works by sitting in the top layer of soil waiting for the seed. It is a barrier, not a treatment. If the seed sprouts first, the barrier arrived after the event it was meant to prevent.

So the mental model to carry: 50–55°F is an alarm clock, not a deadline. It rings well before anything happens, and that is the point.

The corollary is the mistake. If you believe 55°F is germination, then a reading of 52°F tells you to relax for a fortnight — and a fortnight later you are at 60°F with crabgrass already up.

Three Ways To Time It

Extension programmes use three methods, and they are listed here in order of how much precision they give you versus how much work they take.

1. Soil thermometer — the practical one

Buy the cheapest soil thermometer sold and push it in to the marked depth. Michigan State’s trigger: 0–2 inch depth, consistently 50–55°F.

The word doing work is consistently. One warm afternoon in March is not the signal; several days holding in the range is.

Where you measure changes the reading. Take it in an open sunny area rather than a shaded back corner — a strip beside a south-facing driveway warms days ahead of the rest of the lawn, and that strip is also genuinely where your crabgrass starts. Morning readings are more representative than afternoon ones.

2. Growing degree days — the accurate one

GDD counts accumulated warmth rather than elapsed days, which is why it survives a strange spring when a calendar date does not.

  • Purdue: “200 GDD need to accumulate with a base of 50°F” before germination occurs.
  • Michigan State: the optimum application window runs 250 to 500 GDD.

You do not compute these yourself. University turf programmes and state climate services publish running GDD totals by location, and MSU’s guidance is written around exactly that model. If your state’s turf programme publishes a GDD tracker, it is the single best signal available.

3. Forsythia — the cross-check

Free, visible from the car, and misread constantly. It gets its own section below.

The Forsythia Rule, Read Correctly

Michigan State calls forsythia bloom “a good environmental indicator for preemergence timing.” It is genuinely useful. The problem is that “when the forsythia blooms” is treated as a single moment, and Purdue’s phrasing shows it is a sequence:

“Forsythia will be in full bloom prior to crabgrass germination and forsythia flowers will wither near crabgrass germination.”

Read that as a two-stage signal:

Full bloom is the go signal, not the warning. Waiting for the bush to finish flowering puts you at the edge of the window, which is where a warm week turns a good application into a late one.

One caveat from MSU, from a cold spring: “so far this year forsythia bloom seems to be lagging, perhaps due to the many recent nights of very cold temperatures.” Bloom timing responds to air temperature, and pre-emergent timing depends on soil temperature — usually they track together, but in an unusual spring they can drift apart. Use forsythia to confirm what the thermometer told you, not instead of it.

The Bag Problem: Why Weed-And-Feed Fights Itself

Once you have the timing right, there is one purchase that can undo it. Clemson published a piece with an unusually blunt title — Just Say “No” to Pre-Emergent Herbicide and Fertilizer Combination Products! — and the argument is a scheduling one rather than a chemistry one: “The time for applying pre-emergent herbicide does not match the schedule for applying fertilizers containing nitrogen for most of the turfgrasses used for lawns in South Carolina.”

The two windows sit weeks apart. Their pre-emergent timing runs from about March 1 on the coast to March 15–30 in the upstate, while nitrogen on a warm-season lawn should wait until “early to mid-May” — after full green-up. A combination bag makes you choose which job to do correctly, and most people choose the herbicide date and feed a dormant lawn by accident.

One exception, and it is a specific one. Clemson allows the combination where the fertilizer half is a 0-0-7: there is “no nitrogen fertilizer in the 0-0-7 formulation, only a small percentage of potassium fertilizer.” So the analysis panel settles it — a first number above zero on a pre-emergent bag is the problem, and a 0-0-7 is not.

This is the same trap from the other direction as the carrier-nitrogen issue: most pre-emergent products are sold with nitrogen because nitrogen is a convenient carrier, not because the lawn wants it that week. Read the three numbers before the brand.

The Window Is Wider Than The Panic

Something reassuring, because pre-emergent timing generates more anxiety than it deserves.

Michigan State, on the GDD optimum window:

“You don’t have to apply the first day the model indicates optimum. We will stay in the optimum application window for at least two weeks, if not longer, depending on daily temperatures moving forward.”

At least two weeks, typically. That is enough to wait for a dry Saturday, or for the ground to be workable, without losing the season.

What closes the window is not a date. It is soil temperature climbing into the germination range — so a warm spell shortens it and a cold snap extends it. Which is the whole argument for measuring rather than diarising.

One Weed The Usual Bags Do Not Name

Most homeowner pre-emergents are prodiamine or dithiopyr and their labels talk about crabgrass. Sandbur — a sandy-soil problem across the South and lower Midwest, and genuinely painful underfoot — is often not listed at all. Pendimethalin is:

If You Are Already Late

Be honest about which situation you are in, because it changes the product entirely.

Crabgrass has emerged. Purdue: preemergence herbicides “must be applied prior to emergence.” A barrier laid over an established seedling does nothing to it. Applying a pre-emergent now is not a rescue; at best it catches a later germination flush.

The one exception. Purdue names dithiopyr (sold as Dimension), which “can be applied postemergence up to the 1-tiller stage.” A one-tiller plant is a seedling that has not yet branched into multiple stems from the base — so this is a grace period of a couple of weeks after emergence, not a whole spring. If you are within it, dithiopyr is the product that gives you both jobs at once.

Past one tiller. You are in post-emergent territory now — a quinclorac-type product on young plants, covered in how to get rid of crabgrass. And note Purdue’s 73°F figure: if the bulk of germination has not happened yet, there is still a season’s worth of crabgrass coming, so a late application is not entirely wasted.

Then put next year’s on the calendar properly. Autumn matters too — winter annuals like annual bluegrass, henbit and chickweed germinate in the fall on their own temperature schedule, and the same barrier logic applies in reverse.

One Thing To Check Before You Buy

If you are planning to seed or overseed this season, stop and read the label first. A pre-emergent barrier does not distinguish between a crabgrass seed and a grass seed, and the interval between applying one and seeding is measured in months for most products.

No, and this is the misreading that costs people a season. The 55°F figure circulating online is the recommended application temperature, not the biology. Purdue states crabgrass begins to germinate at 57 to 64°F average daily soil temperature at a one-inch depth. Michigan State puts the bulk of it higher still: eighty percent of germination will occur when soil temperatures at the 0 to 2 inch depth are consistently between 60 and 70°F. If you believe 55°F is germination, you conclude you have time when you are actually already inside your application window. If you treat 55°F as the trigger to act, you are correctly early.

How reliable is the forsythia bloom rule?

It is a real indicator that most people read at the wrong moment. Michigan State calls forsythia bloom a good environmental indicator for preemergence timing. Purdue is more precise about which part of the bloom matters: forsythia will be in full bloom prior to crabgrass germination, and forsythia flowers will wither near crabgrass germination. So full yellow bloom means apply now, and withering, dropping petals means germination is arriving — you are at the back of the window, not the front. MSU also notes bloom timing can lag in a cold spring, so it is a cross-check rather than a substitute for a soil thermometer.

Am I too late if crabgrass has already come up?

For most products yes, with one exception worth knowing. Purdue states that preemergence herbicides used for the control of crabgrass must be applied prior to emergence — the chemistry works on the germinating seedling, not on an established plant. The exception Purdue names is dithiopyr, sold as Dimension, which can be applied postemergence up to the one-tiller stage. One tiller means a young plant that has not yet branched into multiple stems from its base, so this is a short grace period measured in a couple of weeks, not a whole spring. Past that, you are in post-emergent territory with a quinclorac-type product, and the pre-emergent belongs on next year's calendar.
