Do I Need a Food Plot? Arkansas Extension Says Maybe Not
Plots rarely sustain a population, you can destroy good native habitat replacing it, and land management matters more. Then: 1 acre per 40, and rotate.

Almost everything written about food plots assumes you should plant one. Arkansas Extension’s publication opens by questioning that, and it is the most useful paragraph on the subject:
“Food plots oftentimes provide a temporary food source but rarely sustain a wildlife population. Sustaining a wildlife population requires a significant investment in food plot materials that often is unnecessary, given the native plants available to wildlife.”
And then the line that should set your budget priority:
“The overall land management practices (e.g., controlling shade) are far more important than food plots.”
The Case For Not Planting
Arkansas’s first instruction is not about seed:
“We recommend checking your habitat first before taking action. Conduct an assessment of the current habitat and how well it matches the habitat requirements of the wildlife species you are interested in managing.”
And the risk of skipping that step:
“You could be destroying perfectly good native wildlife habitat and replacing it with something that offers less nutritional value, little cover or is less productive, not to mention the additional expense of maintaining a cultivated food plot.”
That is an opportunity cost, not a caution. A plot planted into decent native cover is not a gain of forage — it is a trade, and the trade can go the wrong way.
The numbers back the scepticism. Arkansas reports that in an Arkansas study, the crude protein content of native and cultivated wildlife plants ranged from 4 percent to 39 percent depending on plant part and season. Native plants are inside that range, not below it. And a deer needs “at least 6 to 7 percent crude protein”, with “13 to 17 percent or more” required for maximum growth, antler development and reproduction.
So the honest question is which specific nutritional gap you are filling, and when. Arkansas names two windows rather than a season:

And a note of scepticism about winter plots specifically: “a Texas study indicated deer reduce their intake in winter even if feed is readily available”, with the honest conclusion that “probably the main benefit of fall food plots for deer is to lure deer into the open for an adequate harvest.”
One legal point worth knowing before you plan around a plot. Arkansas notes that “using cultivated food plots to bait doves and waterfowl is illegal.” Rules differ by species and by state; check yours rather than assuming a plot is a plot.
Size And Shape: The Numbers
If the habitat assessment says a plot is worth planting, Arkansas is specific:
“Optimally, food plots should be from 1 to 3 acres and an irregular shape with brushy edges. Grain food plots should be no less than 1/4 acre.”
The size logic runs both ways at once, which is why a range rather than a minimum:
- Large enough that plots “aren’t grazed down too early in the season”
- Small enough that “wildlife can feel cover from the protective covering” at the edges
Shape is not decoration. Arkansas: “An irregular-shaped food plot is better than a straight or rectangular food plot because curves, bends and inclusions provide cover from predators. Think about the survival tactics of the wildlife you are managing.”
In larger plots they suggest leaving “islands of cover for hiding and escaping from predators” — with a caveat that is easy to get wrong: “Just don’t leave so much that islands compete with the food plot for shade, moisture and nutrients.”
One planting trick worth stealing for grain plots: “When disking the soil to plant grain food plots, consider planting grain on only half the field and leaving the remaining half disked but unplanted. Native plants in the seedbed will furnish food and cover for wildlife and provide an additional measure of plant diversity.” Half the seed cost, more diversity.
How Many, And Where
Two rules of thumb, both offered as rules of thumb rather than findings:

Then the qualification that matters more than either number:
“Landholdings with poor-quality habitat need more food plots, whereas land holdings with higher-quality habitat need fewer food plots.”
Which closes the loop with the habitat assessment. The number of plots you need is a measurement of what your land is failing to provide, not a target to hit.
Where to put them. Arkansas lists: “field edges or on ditch banks, rights-of-way, logging roads or decks, fire lanes, abandoned fields, forest openings or marginally productive agricultural lands.” Every one of those is already-disturbed or low-value ground — consistent with not replacing good habitat.
And a practical question most planning skips, which Arkansas puts in its pre-planting checklist: “Is there access for a lime wagon, a tractor or an ATV?” A plot you cannot reach with equipment is a plot you will not lime — and lime is usually the input that decides whether the planting works at all. And this is the one thing worth buying before you decide, rather than after. A soil test costs a fraction of a seed order and it answers the question this page is asking: whether the site can carry a plot at all. A pH that needs two tons of lime per acre, on ground a lime wagon cannot reach, is a no — and you would rather learn that from a lab report than from a failed planting.

Rotate Rather Than Plant Everything
This is the section that saves the most money, and it is not the obvious approach.
“Consider planting a portion of your food plots annually. Rotating food plots not only increases plant diversity but also decreases the expense of purchasing cultivated seed and labor.”
Arkansas’s cycle: three- to five-year rotations, “to give early successional plants ample time to establish themselves without allowing grasslands to become overly woody.”
Their worked example: “in a landholding with 30 small openings of 3 acres or less, plant 10 openings each year.” And a placement instruction: “The planted openings should be scattered (not clustered) throughout the landholding to improve accessibility to wildlife.”
For strip plantings they publish the sequences, which exist to maximise the age difference between adjacent strips:

Two-thirds of your ground is unplanted at any time under a three-year rotation, and Arkansas frames that as the diversity benefit rather than a compromise — the unplanted strips are early successional habitat, which is what the plots were meant to supplement in the first place.
