Food Plot Seedbed Preparation: Lime Three Months Early
Lime needs two to three months before planting. Clover goes no deeper than ¼–½ inch. Legume seed must be inoculated. Most plots fail on these three.

Lime Sets Your Calendar
UGA Extension, in one sentence that reorganises the whole project:
“Lime reacts slowly and needs to be applied two to the three months before food plot establishment.”
Lime is not a fertilizer. It does not become available on contact — it has to dissolve and react through the soil to move pH, and that takes a season. Broadcasting lime on planting day means you have applied a material that will act next year, to a crop that needed the pH change this year.
So the sequence runs backwards from your planting date:

View on AmazonIf you are already inside the window, you have two honest options rather than one: accept the pH you have and choose species that tolerate it, or move the planting to the next window. Liming late and planting anyway is the third option and it is the one that produces the disappointing stand.
Arkansas ties the test to more than growth: “A soil test will determine whether phosphorus, potassium or lime needs to be added to the soil to ensure its establishment and to maximize the plant’s nutritional value for wildlife.” The second half is the point of the plot — a plant that grows on deficient soil is a plant with less to offer, which our soil test report guide covers reading in detail.
And the access question from the planning stage matters here. Arkansas asks whether there is “access for a lime wagon, a tractor or an ATV” — a plot you cannot lime is a plot whose pH you have decided to live with. See do I need a food plot.
One species-specific caution. For native warm-season grasses, Arkansas advises avoiding nitrogen in the first year, “as this will encourage weed competition.” Feeding a new native grass stand feeds the weeds faster than it feeds the grass.
Two Seed Depths, One Field
The most common mechanical error in a mixed planting, and UGA gives both numbers:

That is a threefold difference. A single pass at one depth cannot serve both — set the drill for wheat and the clover is buried too deep to emerge; set it for clover and the wheat sits too shallow to root reliably.
Arkansas gives the workaround, and it is two operations rather than a compromise depth:
“Wheat seed could be broadcast and covered first, then clover could be broadcast and lightly rolled.”
Grain in and covered, then the small seed on top and pressed. Same field, same afternoon, two depths.
They add the general principle: “Planting depth should be taken into consideration when planting seed mixtures”, and note that seed “can be mixed and planted together or planted separately in strips in the same field” — a dove field example runs several rows of browntop millet, several of sunflower, several of proso millet, several of grain sorghum, and bare ground.
Inoculate Or It Is Not A Legume
Arkansas states this as a requirement, not a refinement:
“Seeds of legumes need to be inoculated before planting to stimulate nitrogen fixation.”
Here is why it is not optional. A legume fixes nitrogen through a partnership with Rhizobium bacteria living in root nodules. If the correct strain is not present in that soil, the nodules do not form — and the plant grows as an ordinary plant that needs nitrogen from somewhere, rather than as a legume that makes its own. You planted clover and got a crop with a fertilizer bill.
Practically: much bagged seed arrives pre-inoculated with a coating, in which case you are covered. If the seed is uncoated, or has been stored warm, or has been on a shelf a long time, inoculant is a small cost set against the entire reason for choosing a legume. Arkansas also flags a selection point people miss: “Select legumes that are appropriate for grazing. For example, plant a grazing type of soybean as deer will probably graze out the seed type before plants become established.” A soybean bred for grain will be eaten before it establishes.
Why legumes at all: Arkansas puts their protein content at 20 to 30 percent in growing plants, against 15 to 20 percent for cool-season annual grasses like oats, wheat, rye and ryegrass — and a deer needs “13 to 17 percent or more” for maximum growth and antler development.
Firm It More Than Feels Right
UGA:
“Broadcast seeding on a prepared seedbed should be followed with adequate firming of the seedbed with a cultipacker.”
Seed-to-soil contact is what germination depends on. A seed lying in an air pocket in loose, fluffy soil takes up water intermittently and germinates poorly; a seed pressed against soil has continuous moisture contact. Freshly disked ground is the loosest it will ever be, which is exactly when broadcast seed is most likely to sit in air.

Tilled Or No-Till
Both work, and the condition on no-till is the whole answer.
Arkansas: “No-till seeding methods may be successful if herbicides are used to kill existing sod and control other grass competition.”
That conditional is doing all the work. The existing vegetation is the competition — seeding into a living sod without killing it first means your seedlings are racing an established stand and losing. Which is why the no-till route is a herbicide programme rather than a shortcut, and food plot weed control covers what that programme looks like.
For tilled ground, Arkansas reports one clear advantage for a particular group: “studies indicate that planting warm-season grasses on a tilled seedbed is the best planting method.”

The Pure Live Seed Calculation
Worth knowing before you compare two bags on price, because they are rarely comparable.
Arkansas: native warm-season grass rates are based on pounds of pure live seed (pls) per acre, and “to calculate the percent of pls from the seed label, multiply the percent germination by the percent purity and divide by 100.”
So a bag at 80% germination and 90% purity is 72% pure live seed — a pound of bag contains 0.72 pounds of seed that can actually establish. Two bags at the same price per pound are not the same price per acre, and on fluffy native grass seed the gap between bags can be substantial.
Arkansas also notes the practical problem with that seed: “For large acreages, planting fluffy seeds requires a special planter that may be loaned or rented through a local conservation district or private lands biologist.”

On planting dates, we are deliberately not publishing a table. They vary by species and by region, and Arkansas’s own advice is to “ask your local county Extension agent for fact sheets and advice” on optimising establishment. That is the correct answer for a date-sensitive regional question, and inventing a national one would be worse than pointing you at it.
