Grub Preventer vs Grub Killer: The Bag May Be Neither
NC State: pesticide applied at any other time will be ineffective. And the cheap bags printing 'grubs' hold pyrethroids, which never reach the larva.

Two bags on the same shelf, both saying grubs, at similar prices. One of them may be the right product applied on the wrong date, and one of them may not contain a chemistry capable of reaching a grub at all. Telling which is which takes about thirty seconds if you read the right panel.

The Two Columns
This is where most of the money is wasted, and the mistake is almost always the same: buying a preventive product to kill grubs that are already large.

Read the residual column as a date constraint rather than a feature. A longer residual is not a stronger product, it is a wider window — and it moves the earliest sensible application later, because a twelve-week active laid down in early May has expired before the eggs hatch.
The Class Absent From Both Columns
Notice which class appears in neither: the pyrethroids. Bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, permethrin and their relatives are the cheapest and most widely sold lawn insecticides, and several of them print “grubs” on the bag. Penn State lists them in a different section — for adult scarab beetles feeding on foliage. They are contact insecticides that bind tightly to thatch and soil organic matter, so they lose activity before they get anywhere near a larva feeding several inches down.
If the active on your bag ends in -thrin, it is not in that table for a reason.
This is the single most useful habit on this page and it takes one look: read the active ingredient panel rather than the brand, because the front of a bag is marketing and the panel is the product.
When a Curative Actually Works
NC State is unusually direct about the timing: curative products work when grubs are actively feeding near the soil surface, which is August through October, and again April into early May — and pesticide applied at any other time will be ineffective.
Between those two windows, autumn wins. NC State notes that curative treatments in late summer or autumn are usually more effective than spring ones because the grubs are still small, and Ohio State makes the same point from the other side: smaller, younger grubs are more susceptible to insecticides than large, old ones. A grub that has fed since August is a harder target in April than it was in September.
Whatever goes down, water it in immediately. Illinois is explicit about this — the active has to reach the soil where the larvae are, and a granule sitting in the canopy is doing nothing.
And none of this tells you whether to treat at all. The Bags That Say “Grubs” and Cannot Deliver
The sequence plays out the same way every time. You count grubs. You buy the bag that says grubs. You apply it. Nothing improves — and nothing was ever going to, because the active was a pyrethroid.

And that one settles the question itself. We read its label on EPA’s database and it does not merely leave white grubs off the pest list — it names the alternative, three separate times: “for grub control, use Scotts GrubEx”, and “For grub control, apply Scotts GrubEx anytime from late-April to mid-August.” When a registrant’s own label sends you to a different product for the pest you are shopping for, the shelf has answered the question before you do.
It also shows exactly how a pyrethroid bag earns the word. That label’s pest list does contain one grub: black turfgrass ataenius, a scarab whose larvae are technically white grubs but a much smaller, surface-feeding species. One legitimate entry on a long pest list is enough for the word to appear in marketing, and nowhere near enough to control the grubs you counted.
The pattern is worth naming, because it is not unique to grubs. A bag earns the word on its front by listing a pest the active can genuinely reach somewhere on its label; it does not earn the right to be the product you need. The same reading problem produces the wrong purchase for armyworms and sod webworms, which are surface chewers that pyrethroids do reach — the identical active is right there and wrong here.
The Short Version
Three groups, not two. Preventive, curative, and the pyrethroids that belong to neither.
Residual is a date, not a strength. A twelve-week active applied too early has expired before hatch.
Curative has two windows and one of them is better. NC State: August to October, or April into early May, and nothing outside them works. Autumn beats spring because the grubs are smaller.
Water it in the same day, or the application is decorative.
And count first. No product on this page is the right answer to a lawn that does not have a grub problem.

What is the difference between grub preventer and grub killer?
When they work, not how strong they are. A preventer sits in the soil and kills larvae as they hatch, so it goes down before egg hatch — late May to mid-August depending on the active's residual. A killer, or curative, works on larvae already present and feeding, and it has essentially no residual: it acts on what is there when it arrives. The two are not interchangeable in either direction. A preventer applied in autumn onto large grubs is money spent on the wrong life stage, and a curative applied in spring before hatch is applied onto nothing.
Does bifenthrin or lambda-cyhalothrin kill grubs?
Not usefully, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in lawn insecticide. Pyrethroids — bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, permethrin and their relatives ending in -thrin — are contact insecticides that bind tightly to thatch and soil organic matter, so they lose activity before reaching a larva feeding several inches down. Which actives are preventive and which are curative?
Preventive: chlorantraniliprole, clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam. Curative: trichlorfon. The residual length inside the preventive group changes the earliest sensible date — imidacloprid and thiamethoxam hold about eight weeks, which points at a mid-June application, while clothianidin and chlorantraniliprole can hold up to twelve, so they should not go down before late May. Pyrethroids appear in neither column.
Do I need to water it in?
Yes, immediately, and this is the step that quietly wastes otherwise correct applications. Illinois Extension is explicit that the active has to reach the soil where the larvae are. A granule sitting in the canopy is doing nothing at all, and the same is true of a liquid that dried on the leaf. Whatever goes down, water it in the same day.
