The clearest example on this shelf of a product whose name promises a job its chemistry is not the recommended tool for.
Our Verdict
The bag says Season Long Grub Control. The active is lambda-cyhalothrin, a synthetic pyrethroid — and the extension guidance we rely on does not put the pyrethroids in the grub column. Penn State lists them for ADULT scarab beetles feeding on foliage rather than for larvae, because pyrethroids are contact insecticides that bind tightly to thatch and soil organic matter and lose activity before reaching something feeding inches down. To be fair about what we do and do not know: the product is EPA-registered, and registration means efficacy data was submitted for its label claims. So we are not telling you it does nothing. We are telling you that the university turf programs recommending actives for white grubs name anthranilic diamides and neonicotinoids for prevention and organophosphates for cure, and this is none of those. For surface pests — the mole crickets and chinch bugs also on the bag — it is a reasonable granular product at a fair price.
