Grub Preventer vs Grub Killer: The Bag May Be Neither

Enormous coverage for the money, and the one pest on the front of the bag it will not deliver on is the one people buy it for.
On price per square foot this is the cheapest lawn insecticide we list — 16,500 sq ft from a ten-dollar bag — and for surface insects like ants, ticks and fleas it does what it says. The problem is the word 'grubs' on the front, and the 'above and below ground' claim next to it. The active is bifenthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, and Penn State's grub guidance lists the pyrethroids for adult beetles feeding on foliage, not for larvae; bifenthrin binds to thatch and soil organic matter and loses activity before it reaches a grub in the root zone. So a homeowner who counts grubs, buys this because the bag says grubs, applies it and sees no improvement has not made a mistake — the product was never the right chemistry. Buy it for surface pests if the price suits you. For a confirmed grub count, buy a curative instead.

Label read on EPA's label database
EPA Reg. No. 239-2726
We opened this product's accepted label on EPA's own Pesticide Product Label System — the strongest source available for what a product is registered to do.
Label read 2026-08-02 on EPA PPLS. EPA Reg. 239-2726, bifenthrin, granular. The alternate brand name list on this registration is long and includes 'Ortho Lawn Insect Killer Granules', 'Ortho Insect Killer Granules for Lawns', 'Ortho Home Defense Insect Killer Granules' and several more — one registration behind a whole shelf of Ortho granular names, which is why the BugClear name alone does not identify the product. The bifenthrin percentage was not legible in this label's text layer (retail copy reports 0.20%) and is deliberately not recorded here. Ortho also sells a separate granular bifenthrin registration, 239-2764, so match the number on the bag.
Where this page and the container disagree, the container wins — the label is the legal authority on rates and restrictions. How to read one yourself.
Matched against each state's actual disease, weed and pest pressure.
