How to Get Rid of Wild Onions: A Two-Year Job

Round hollow leaves or flat solid ones? That tells you which plant you have. Neither dies in one season, and most sprays fail for a reason you can fix.

Two things about this weed are worth knowing before you spend anything.

It is almost certainly a two-year job. And the reason your spray failed last time is probably not the product — it is that the spray ran off the leaf before the plant absorbed any of it.

Both are fixable. Neither is fixed by buying a stronger bottle.

Which One Do You Have

They are treated the same way, but telling them apart takes five seconds and tells you whether you have a second reproduction problem coming in June.

That aerial bulblet difference matters. Wild garlic forms small bulbs at the top of the flower stalk in late spring, and they drop and start new plants — a second route to reinfestation that wild onion does not have. If you have wild garlic and let it reach early summer untreated, the patch reseeds itself from above as well as spreading below.

Both give themselves away the same way: Mississippi State notes the “distinctive ‘garlicky’ or ‘alliaceous’ odor” when crushed. If your lawn smells like onions after you mow, that is the identification confirmed — no other common lawn weed does that.

And both are conspicuous because, per Mississippi State, wild garlic grows “taller than most turf stands” — the slender clumps standing a hand’s width above everything else two days after you cut.

Allium fits none of them cleanly: it looks grassy, it is not a grass, and it is not a sedge either. That is exactly why the usual grassy-weed products do nothing to it, and why it earns its own page. The other resident of that gap is moss, which is not a vascular weed at all — and which no herbicide on the broadleaf shelf was built to touch either.

The Calendar Is Backwards From Your Instincts

This is the single most useful thing here, and it explains most failed attempts.

Clemson describes the life cycle: both species “emerge in late fall from underground bulbs and grow through the winter and spring. In late spring, aerial bulblets are formed, and the plants die back in early summer.” Mississippi State’s framing: both are “cool-season perennials that sprout from underground bulbs every fall.”

Now line that up against when people act. You notice wild onions in April, when they are tall, obvious and flowering. But by April the plant has finished most of its growing year and is pushing energy downward into new bulbs and upward into bulblets. Herbicide applied then is fighting a plant on its way out that has already banked next year.

Clemson’s actual timing:

“Treat wild garlic and wild onion in the fall after new shoots have emerged and again in early spring (February or early March).”

Autumn is the application that counts. New shoots, actively growing, small, and the plant is still investing in leaves rather than bulbs.

Why Pulling Makes It Worse

Everyone tries this first, and it is worse than doing nothing on an established clump.

Clemson: “bulbs or bulblets will likely be left in the ground, and new leaves will later re-emerge.” Mississippi State rates hand pulling “only moderately effective since it is impossible to remove all bulbs without excavating with a hand trowel.”

Picture what is underneath: not one bulb, but a cluster — a parent bulb with small offset bulblets attached around it. Pull the tops and the leaves come away while the offsets detach and stay behind, each now a separate plant with no competition from the parent. That is how a single clump becomes six.

If you dig, dig properly. Moist soil, a narrow trowel, and lift the whole soil mass around the clump rather than tugging the leaves. That works on a handful of clumps in a bed. It does not scale to a lawn.

And mowing does not control it. Mississippi State gives two reasons: most populations “reproduce mainly by bulb formation rather than by seed set”, so cutting before seed set achieves nothing; and they are “adapted to low mowing height”, so cutting does not weaken them. Mowing only hides the clumps until they outgrow the turf again.

Why Your Spray Ran Off

Here is the mechanical reason a correct product still fails on this weed.

Look at what you are spraying: round, upright, waxy tubes. There is almost no horizontal leaf surface for a droplet to sit on, and the waxy cuticle repels water. A droplet lands, beads, and rolls off onto the soil where it does nothing.

Mississippi State does not treat this as optional:

“These herbicides must be applied in combination with a nonionic surfactant to obtain satisfactory control.”

Purdue attacks the same problem from the other end: cut the tube open. Their instruction is to “apply 2,4-D immediately after mowing so the herbicide can enter through the cut leaves.” A mown wild onion is no longer a sealed waxy cylinder — it is a bundle of open ends, and the herbicide goes in through the cut rather than having to cross the cuticle at all. Immediately is the operative word; a cut left a day or two seals over.

So the two fixes stack rather than compete: mow, spray the cut ends within the hour, and put a surfactant in the tank for whatever lands on intact leaf.

And Purdue is blunter than most about the ceiling on all of this: “selective chemical control is difficult and normally ineffective”, with “multiple years of applications” needed and dense turf from proper fertilisation and mowing named as the more effective long-term answer. That is not a reason to skip the spray — it is a reason not to expect the spray to be the whole programme.

A surfactant breaks the water’s surface tension so the spray spreads and sticks rather than beading. On most broadleaf weeds a ready-to-use product’s built-in wetting agent is enough. On an upright waxy tube it frequently is not.

Two practical notes: a surfactant goes into a concentrate you mix yourself, not into a ready-to-spray hose-end bottle, and you follow the herbicide label’s rate for it. Bruising the clumps lightly with a rake before spraying is a common field trick to break the waxy surface — it is not in either publication, so treat it as folklore rather than guidance.

Which Product, By Your Grass

The options split by turfgrass, and warm-season lawns have the stronger set.

Bermuda, zoysia and centipede only. Clemson names three more: imazaquin (sold as Image Nutsedge Killer), Celsius WG (thiencarbazone, iodosulfuron and dicamba), and metsulfuron products. Read the label against your own grass. The Mississippi State table exists precisely because these actives are not uniformly safe — several carry “potential injury” or “not recommended” ratings on particular species, and St. Augustine is the usual one to check. In beds, paths and cracks — not lawn — Clemson lists glyphosate. It is non-selective and kills whatever it contacts, so it belongs nowhere near turf you want to keep.

The Two-Year Calendar

Clemson is unusually direct about the timeline, and it is the expectation most guides leave out:

“Postemergence herbicides applied in the fall and repeated in spring over two years provides the most consistent results.”

And: “Repeated applications over two or three years might be needed to completely kill all clumps.”

So the realistic plan is four to six applications across two years, not one bottle in April.

Wild onion and wild garlic — the two-year sequence

  1. Identify and check your grass speciesBefore buying anything

    Roll a leaf — hollow tube is wild garlic, flat and solid is wild onion. Then confirm the product you are considering lists your turfgrass by name, because the warm-season actives are not all safe on St. Augustine.

  2. First application — autumn, on new shootsFall, after new shoots have emerged

    This is the one that matters. Small actively growing shoots, before the plant starts banking energy in bulbs. Mix a nonionic surfactant with the herbicide or expect it to run off.

  3. Second application — late winterFebruary or early March

    Clemson's second window. The plant is growing through winter, so it is still taking herbicide down, unlike the April clumps everyone notices.

  4. Do not judge it in year oneSpring, year one

    Surviving clumps are normal and are not evidence the product failed. The bulb cluster holds bulbs at different depths and dormancy states, and one season's doses will not reach all of them.

  5. Repeat both applications in year twoFall, then February or early March again

    This is where the population actually collapses. Clemson notes two or three years may be needed to kill all clumps.

  6. Thicken the turf in betweenYour regional feeding window

    Dense turf through spring, summer and fall suppresses winter-emerging weeds by leaving them no open ground to emerge into. It is the part that stops the patch coming back from a neighbour's seed and bulblets.

What To Expect

Year one, spring: fewer clumps, not none. If you sprayed correctly in autumn and again in February, that is the expected result, not a failure.

Year two, spring: the population should be visibly collapsing.

Year three: scattered survivors, spot-treated.

The two mistakes that reset the clock are spraying only in April, and spraying without a surfactant. Fix those two and the calendar above does the rest. One check settles it, and Clemson Extension states it precisely: wild garlic leaves are round and hollow, while those of wild onion are flat and solid.
