Liquid vs Granular Fertilizer: The Panel Decides

UGA gives a calculation and a threshold: at least 30% of the nitrogen slow-release. Neither word — liquid or granular — appears in it. The form is a delivery choice.

The test neither form passes automatically

The liquid-or-granular argument is conducted almost entirely on the wrong axis. Here is the test that actually predicts how a fertilizer behaves, from UGA:

“To calculate the percentage of the total nitrogen that is water insoluble, divide the percentage of WIN by the total percentage of nitrogen, and multiply by 100.”

And the bar it is measured against:

“A slow release lawn fertilizer should contain at least 30 percent of the nitrogen in a slow release form.”

Read those two sentences again and notice what is missing. Neither the word liquid nor the word granular appears. The calculation takes two numbers off a panel, and the panel is printed on both forms.

So the honest instruction is: pick up whichever container you were considering, find the guaranteed analysis, and run the arithmetic. A bag that fails it is a quick-release product in a bag. A bottle that passes it is a slow-release product in a bottle.

What to look for, because “slow-release” on the front is not the declaration. UGA again:

“Slowly available nitrogen is usually identified on the label as ‘water insoluble nitrogen’ (WIN), UF, IBDU, SCU, or poly-coat (PCU).”

Penn State groups the underlying materials:

“Slow-release nitrogen fertilizers can be grouped into different categories, including the coated ureas, methylene ureas, and natural organics.”

What the form really decides

Not release — delivery. And delivery has four consequences worth pricing.

Rate accuracy, and which calibration you are doing. A granular needs a spreader you have calibrated; the bag’s setting number is a starting guess for one machine, not a measurement of yours. A liquid needs either a sprayer you have calibrated or a hose-end applicator that meters by water flow — which varies with your pressure, so the same bottle at the same setting delivers different amounts on different properties. Neither form lets you skip the arithmetic. One of them is just less honest about it.

Coverage per container. A 32 oz liquid concentrate typically treats a few thousand square feet. A bag of granular covers five to fifteen thousand. That is not a quality difference, but it is a trips-to-the-shop difference and it shows up in cost.

Burn risk. Immediately available nitrogen sitting in solution on leaf tissue is the higher-risk case, particularly in heat. That is a property of quick-release nitrogen rather than of liquids as such — but since more liquids are quick-release, the risk tracks the form in practice.

Why your shelf is mostly bags

There is a physical reason, and it is worth stating carefully because it is easy to overstate.

Penn State’s slow-release categories are coated ureas, methylene ureas, and natural organics. A coated urea is a coating on a prill. A natural organic is a solid material that has to break down. These are, by construction, particles.

That does not prove no liquid can carry slow-release nitrogen, and we are not going to claim it does. What it explains is why the products marketed on extended feeding are overwhelmingly bagged, and why our own catalogue runs eleven granular lawn fertilizers to one liquid. That ratio is a fact about the shelf, not a verdict on the chemistry.

And here we owe a correction to our own work. Our label guide has been telling readers that half or more of the nitrogen in slow-release form means genuine extended feeding. UGA’s published minimum is 30 percent, not 50. Both numbers are defensible — 30 percent is the threshold a product must clear to be called slow-release, and half is a stricter bar we prefer for a main feeding — but we were stating a preference as though it were the definition, without attribution. It is now labelled as ours on both pages.

When liquid is genuinely the right tool

Three cases, and none of them is a season’s fertility programme.

Iron for chlorosis. When the lawn is yellow because iron is locked up rather than because nitrogen is short, you want colour without pushing growth. That is a liquid job and it is the clearest one.

A deliberate low-rate feed. Frequent applications at low rates are a legitimate strategy on turf you do not want to surge, and liquids meter down more easily than a spreader does.

Everything else — which is to say, the main feeding. If you are shopping for the season’s nitrogen, you are shopping for the release fraction, and that is where the bags are.

Stop asking which form. Take whatever container you are holding, find WIN or UF or IBDU or SCU or PCU on the panel, divide by the total nitrogen, and see whether you clear 30 percent. That answers the question the form was standing in for. Then let the form decide the things it actually governs: whether you calibrate a spreader or a hose, how much ground a container covers, what a pound of nitrogen costs you, and how much burn risk you are carrying in heat. Can I skip calibration with a hose-end bottle?

No, you have swapped one calibration for a less visible one. A spreader at least tells you the setting it is on. A hose-end applicator meters by water flow, which varies with your pressure, so the same bottle at the same setting delivers different amounts on different properties. Does the form change how often I apply?

Only through the release fraction, which is the point. Quick-release nitrogen is used or lost within a few weeks, so a mostly quick-release product — in either form — puts you on a shorter cycle at lower rates. A product past UGA's 30 percent slow-release bar feeds for longer and lets you apply less often. Frequency follows the panel, not the packaging.
