How to Read a Fertilizer Label: What N-P-K Means
How to read a fertilizer label: what N-P-K actually means, how to work out the nitrogen you are really applying, and the claims worth ignoring.

Two bags sit on the shelf. One is $18 and says 29-0-5. The other is $46 and says 32-0-4. They look nearly identical. One of them may genuinely be four times the value of the other — and the label tells you which, in about thirty seconds, once you know what to read.
Fertilizer is the easier of the two labels, because nothing on it is legally binding in the way a pesticide label is. If the bag in question also contains a herbicide — a weed-and-feed — then the pesticide half governs, and how to read a pesticide label covers what changes: the registration number, the signal word, and the sentence that makes the directions federal law.
The Three Numbers
Every fertilizer bag in the United States carries three numbers in the same order. They are percentages of the bag’s total weight:
- N — Nitrogen (first number). Drives green colour and leaf growth. This is the number that matters most for an established lawn, and the one you are really buying.
- P — Phosphate (middle number). Supports root establishment. Most mature lawns already have enough, and many states restrict it — see below.
- K — Potash (third number). Supports stress tolerance: drought, cold, wear and disease resistance.
So a 50 lb bag marked 24-0-6 is 24% nitrogen, 0% phosphate and 6% potash by weight. The other 70% is carrier — the granule material that lets you spread a few pounds of nutrient evenly over thousands of square feet. Carrier is not filler in the dishonest sense; without it you could not spread the nutrient accurately.
The order never changes. If you remember nothing else, remember that the first number is nitrogen.
The Only Calculation That Matters
Price per bag is meaningless. Price per pound of nitrogen is the real number, and getting there takes two steps.
Step 1 — pounds of nitrogen in the bag: bag weight × (first number ÷ 100).
A 50 lb bag of 24-0-6 → 50 × 0.24 = 12 lb of nitrogen.
Step 2 — nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft: pounds of nitrogen ÷ (coverage ÷ 1,000).
If that bag covers 15,000 sq ft → 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8 lb N per 1,000 sq ft.
That 0.8 figure is the number to compare, and it is the number extension recommendations are written in. A normal single application lands between 0.5 and 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft. Much below that and you will see little response; much above it and you are buying surge growth, extra mowing and disease risk.
Run this on the two bags from the top of this page and the $46 one is often the cheaper lawn feed, because you apply less of it and apply it less often.
Reading Any Bag in Sixty Seconds
Read the first numberFront of the bag
Nitrogen percentage. Everything else on the front — the photography, the season name, the words 'premium' or 'professional' — is marketing and carries no regulated meaning.
Do the two-step nitrogen mathThirty seconds
Bag weight × first number ÷ 100 = pounds of nitrogen. Divide by coverage in thousands of square feet. You are aiming for 0.5–1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per application.

Look for 'slowly available nitrogen' or 'water insoluble nitrogen'. UGA's published minimum for the slow-release claim is 30 percent of the total nitrogen; we look for half or more before calling it genuine extended feeding rather than a two-week colour surge, which is a stricter bar of ours rather than the official one.

Phosphorus is restricted on established lawns in a number of states. A zero is usually correct and often legally required — reserve phosphorus for new seeding, and only when a soil test says you need it.
Set the spreader to the bag, not to habitAt application
Every product has its own setting chart, and the same setting number means different rates on different bags. Calibrate to this bag, then walk at a steady pace with a consistent overlap.
NC State’s Carolina Lawns turns those three numbers into a shopping rule, and it is the most useful sentence on this subject we have found: “Ideally, the fertilizer should have a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 analysis (for example, 12-4-8 or 16-4-8), and one-fourth to one-half of the nitrogen should be a slow-release form. If this ratio cannot be located, then a straight-grade analysis product (for example, 10-10-10) may be used.” So the ratio matters more than the exact numbers — and note they name the fallback rather than leaving you stuck at the shelf.

Slow-Release vs Quick-Release
And the panel answers the form question too: liquid vs granular fertilizer applies UGA’s 30 percent calculation to both, because neither word appears in the test.
This is the second-most-useful line on the label and the one most people never find. Somewhere in the guaranteed analysis panel you will see nitrogen broken into forms — wording varies, but look for “slowly available”, “water insoluble nitrogen” (WIN) or a named coated source.
- Quick-release (urea, ammonium sulfate) dissolves immediately. Fast colour, gone in two to three weeks, highest burn risk, and the form most likely to leach past the roots after heavy rain.
- Slow-release (coated urea, sulfur-coated, or organic nitrogen sources) releases over six to twelve weeks. Steadier growth, much lower burn risk, far less leaching.
For a home lawn, slow-release is usually the better buy even at a higher shelf price, because you apply it less often and lose less of it. The one time quick-release makes sense is when you want a visible response fast — a spring green-up push on a warm-season lawn, for instance.

Phosphorus and the Law
The middle number is the one with legal consequences. Phosphorus that washes into lakes and rivers feeds algae blooms, so a number of states — Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Maryland among them — restrict phosphorus fertilizer on established lawns, and many municipalities add their own rules including blackout dates and pre-storm restrictions.
Practical guidance:
- On an established lawn, a middle number of zero is normally the right choice and may be the only legal one.
- On new seed or sod, phosphorus genuinely helps root establishment, and most state rules carve out an exception for it.
- Apply phosphorus only when a soil test says the soil is deficient. Guessing here is what the regulations exist to stop.
The EPA’s own yard guidance adds the operational rules that keep any bag out of the water: apply fertilizers “only when necessary and at the recommended amount,” don’t apply “before windy or rainy days,” “avoid applying fertilizer close to waterways” — and fill the spreader on a hard surface, where a spill can be swept up instead of washed in.

When the Name Is Doing Two Jobs
Bone meal is one way a bag misleads. Another is a product whose name matches something you were looking for while its label says otherwise.

What to Ignore on the Bag
Most of the front panel is not regulated information:
- “Premium”, “professional grade”, “advanced”. No defined meaning.
- Season names (“spring formula”, “fall feed”). Sometimes a genuine formulation difference, often just a nitrogen release rate you can read yourself from the analysis panel.
- Coverage claims in isolation. A bag covering 15,000 sq ft tells you nothing until you pair it with the nitrogen percentage — that is the whole point of the calculation above.
- Photographs of impossibly green lawns. Colour comes from nitrogen and iron; the photo is not evidence of either.
Two things on the bag are regulated and reliable: the guaranteed analysis panel, and the application rate and spreader settings. Those are the parts worth your attention.
The label’s spreader settings are a starting point rather than a promise: delivery varies with your walking pace and your machine’s wear. Broadcast vs drop spreader covers which type suits which lawn and how to calibrate either one against a weighed test strip.
One label claim worth special skepticism is the fall ‘winterizer’ — the potassium it carries is unnecessary without a soil test showing a deficiency, and the recommended rates run low for the job it names. Winterizer fertilizer covers what Purdue endorses and what it faults.
When You Need a Soil Test Instead
Nitrogen is not usefully measured by a standard soil test — it moves and transforms too fast for a snapshot to mean much, which is why nitrogen recommendations are given as a rate per 1,000 sq ft rather than “what your soil lacks”.
Everything else is worth testing. A soil test tells you your pH (which decides whether nutrients are even available to the plant), your phosphorus and potassium levels, and whether you need lime. Your state’s land-grant university extension service runs soil tests inexpensively, and the report usually tells you what to stop buying as often as what to start.

What do the three numbers on fertilizer mean?
They are the guaranteed percentages by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potash (K), always in that order. A 32-0-4 bag is 32% nitrogen, 0% phosphate and 4% potash — the remaining 64% is carrier material and other nutrients. Because they are percentages of the bag's weight, a 50 lb bag of 32-0-4 contains 16 lb of actual nitrogen.
How much nitrogen am I actually applying?
Multiply the bag weight by the first number as a decimal. A 50 lb bag of 24-0-6 holds 12 lb of nitrogen (50 × 0.24). If the label says it covers 15,000 sq ft, that is 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft — right in the normal range of roughly 0.5 to 1 lb per application. This single calculation is what lets you compare two bags at completely different prices.
Why is the middle number zero on so many lawn fertilizers?
Because most established lawns do not need phosphorus, and many states restrict it. Phosphorus runoff drives algae blooms in lakes and rivers, so states including Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Maryland limit phosphorus fertilizer on established turf. A zero middle number is usually the responsible and legal choice — the exception is new seeding, where phosphorus genuinely helps roots establish.
Is slow-release fertilizer worth the extra cost?
For most lawns, yes. Quick-release nitrogen gives a fast colour surge and is largely used or lost within two to three weeks, which means more frequent applications and a higher burn risk. Slow-release feeds over six to twelve weeks, produces steadier growth and leaches far less. Check the label line for 'slowly available' or 'water insoluble nitrogen'. UGA's published minimum is that a slow release lawn fertilizer should contain at least 30 percent of the nitrogen in a slow release form; we use half or more as a stricter bar for a main feeding, and that stricter figure is our preference rather than the definition.
Do I need a soil test before I fertilize?
You do not need one to apply nitrogen, because nitrogen is not measured usefully by a standard soil test — it moves and changes too quickly. You do need one to know about phosphorus, potassium, pH and lime, and it is the only way to stop guessing about those.
