How Much Fertilizer? The Bag's Number Isn't Yours
How much fertilizer you need in three steps — measure the area, convert to pounds of nitrogen, calibrate the spreader. The bag’s number is not yours.

Almost every fertilizer problem — burn stripes, patchy colour, a bag that runs out three quarters of the way across the yard — comes from the same root cause: nobody measured. Three numbers fix all of it, and you only have to work them out once.
To be exact about what the title means, because it matters on a regulated product: the number that is not yours is the coverage figure — the “covers 5,000 sq ft” on the front, which assumes a lawn you have never measured. The rate is not up for negotiation. EPA’s own homeowner guidance is that nitrogen fertilizer should be applied at the rate specified on the manufacturer’s label, and everything below is about hitting that rate on your actual ground rather than departing from it.

Step 1: Measure the Lawn, Honestly
Most people overestimate their lawn by a wide margin, because they picture the property line rather than the grass. The house, driveway, patio, beds and paths all come out.
The pacing method. A normal adult stride is close to three feet. Walk each edge counting paces, multiply by three, and you have feet. Accurate enough — you are not surveying, you are avoiding a 40% error.
Break odd shapes into simple ones:
- Rectangle: length × width
- Triangle: (base × height) ÷ 2
- Circle: 3.14 × radius × radius
- Anything irregular: chop it into the shapes above and add the results
Add the pieces, subtract the hard surfaces, and write the number on the inside of the garage door. You will use it for the rest of the time you own the house — for seed, for weed control, for everything.

Step 2: Turn Nitrogen Into Pounds of Product
You do not apply “fertilizer” at a rate. You apply nitrogen at a rate, and the bag is just the delivery vehicle. The target for a single application is 0.5 to 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft — and the top of that range is a ceiling extension programs state outright, as in UF/IFAS’s instruction to apply “at a rate of no more than 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of lawn.”
The conversion is one division:
pounds of product per 1,000 sq ft = target nitrogen ÷ (first number ÷ 100)
Worked through with a 24-0-6 bag and a 1 lb nitrogen target:
- Nitrogen as a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
- Product needed: 1 ÷ 0.24 = 4.2 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- For a 6,000 sq ft lawn: 4.2 × 6 = 25 lb of product
Now compare that with the bag’s own rate chart. The two should land close together. If they disagree by a lot, re-check your arithmetic — and if they still disagree, follow the label, which is the legal authority on rate.

Where does the nitrogen target itself come from? NC State’s default is “about 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft or the amount recommended on your soil test” — and the second half of that is the better answer. A soil test replaces a national average with your own ground, which is why their guidance opens with taking samples “to determine soil pH and nutrient requirements” rather than with a bag.
Step 3: Calibrate the Spreader
Here is the part almost everyone skips. The setting number on your spreader dial is not a rate. Granule size, density and humidity all change how fast product flows through the same opening, so setting 6 on your spreader with this bag is a different rate than setting 6 with last year’s bag.

Measure a strip of 100 sq ft — 10 ft × 10 ft is easiest. Do this on the driveway if you can sweep up afterwards, or on a tarp, so you can recover the product.

Weigh out a known amount into the hopper — 5 lb is convenient. A kitchen scale is fine. Note the exact figure.

Use the setting printed on the bag as a starting point, and walk your normal, steady pace. Pace matters as much as the dial — walking slower puts down more.
Weigh what is leftOne minute
Subtract to find what you actually applied over 100 sq ft, then multiply by 10 for the rate per 1,000 sq ft. Now you know what your dial setting really does.
Adjust and write it on the bagThree minutes
Too high, close the setting a notch; too low, open it. Re-run the test if the gap was large. Then write the correct setting on the bag in marker — future you will not remember it.
Broadcast or Drop?
The two spreader types fail in different ways, which is what should decide your choice.

A broadcast spreader suits most lawns because its overlapping fan hides small inconsistencies. A drop spreader is more accurate but unforgiving: miss the wheel-track alignment and you will see green and pale stripes for weeks. A common approach is a drop spreader for the perimeter pass and a broadcast spreader for the open middle.
Spreading Without Stripes
- Do a header pass first. Spread one lap around the perimeter, then work back and forth inside it. This gives you a turning zone so you never turn with the hopper open.
- Close the hopper when you stop or turn. A stationary open spreader dumps a burn spot in seconds.
- Overlap by the right amount. With a broadcast spreader, aim your wheels at the edge of the previous pass’s spread pattern, not at the previous wheel track.
- Half rate, two directions. This is Penn State’s own remedy for skips and overlaps: “make two coverage passes, with the second pass being at right angles to the first,” because “the resulting grid pattern has the effect of masking skips or overlaps made in either coverage pass.” Note the condition that makes it safe rather than double-fed — calibrate the spreader “to deliver half the desired rate of fertilizer, then cover the entire area twice.” It takes twice as long and it is the best cure for visible banding.
- Sweep hard surfaces back onto the lawn. Granules left on a driveway wash straight into storm drains. This is both wasteful and the specific behaviour that nutrient-runoff rules target.
- Water it in. A quarter to a half inch moves granules off the blades and into the root zone — but never apply immediately before heavy rain.

One feature on a spreader is regulatory rather than cosmetic, and it is worth knowing before you buy. Several states set a minimum distance from water for fertilizer and then shorten it if the spreader can aim: New Jersey’s 25 feet drops to 10 with a drop spreader or a deflector-equipped rotary, New York’s 20 feet drops to 3 with a spreader guard or deflector shield, and Michigan’s 15-foot setback is waived the same way. How do I measure my lawn size?
Pace the outline and multiply. A normal adult stride is close to three feet, so count paces along each edge and multiply by three to get feet. Break odd shapes into rectangles, triangles and circles, work each one out separately and add them up — then subtract the house, driveway and beds, because those are usually a third of what people assume is lawn. Measuring once and writing the number down is the single most useful thing you can do for every future application.
How much fertilizer per 1,000 square feet?

Do I really need to calibrate my spreader?
Yes, and it takes about ten minutes once. The same setting number means different rates on different spreaders and different products, because granule size and density vary. Penn State's calibration guide names the consequences directly: even experienced applicators occasionally make skips and overlaps, which result in alternating light and dark green stripes in the turf, inconsistent pest control, or foliar burn. They also note spreaders should be calibrated separately for each operator, because ground speed differs from person to person — so a setting someone else worked out is not yours either. Calibrate once per product and write the setting on the bag with a marker.
What's the difference between a broadcast and a drop spreader?
A broadcast (rotary) spreader throws granules in a wide fan, covers ground quickly and blends overlaps forgivingly, which makes it the better choice for most lawns — Penn State puts the trade the other way round and reaches the same place: drop spreaders are preferable to rotary spreaders for working in small, confined areas and when using lightweight or very fine granules, and they are not efficient for treating large areas. A drop spreader releases granules straight down in a precise band the width of the hopper — far more accurate near beds, paths and water, but it demands exact wheel-track overlap or you get visible stripes. Many people use a broadcast spreader for the open lawn and a drop spreader along edges.
What should I do with leftover fertilizer?
Keep it sealed and dry for the next application rather than spreading the extra to use it up — that overdose is exactly how lawns get burned and how nitrogen ends up in storm drains. Store it off concrete floors in a closed container, sweep any granules off driveways and sidewalks back onto the lawn, and never rinse a spreader out over a hard surface that drains to the street.
