Snow Mold Treatment: It Grew Under the Snow
Snow mold treatment is mostly about the autumn before: gray and pink snow mold grew under the snow, so what you see in March is already finished damage. Guide for Michigan, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

When the snow finally melts and your lawn emerges covered in matted, crusty gray or salmon-pink circles, that’s snow mold — a cold-weather fungal disease of cool-season lawns. It grows under the snow all winter, which is why the damage seems to appear overnight.
Michigan lawns lean Kentucky Bluegrass — and bluegrass sits among the most snow-mold-susceptible turf you can grow, which makes fall prevention matter here more than almost anywhere.Why Snow Mold Happens
Snow mold fungi (Typhula species for gray, Microdochium nivale for pink) activate when snow falls on ground that isn’t frozen. Penn State names the three conditions precisely, and none of them is cold as such: “temperatures slightly above freezing at the snow/turf interface, wet leaf tissues, and darkness.” Snow is not the weapon, it is the blanket that supplies all three at once.
That also gives you a dose-response rather than a yes-or-no. Penn State: “Typically, the deeper the snow cover and the longer the snow remains on the turf surface, the greater the extent of symptom development and turfgrass injury.” A winter of thin, quickly-melting cover barely registers; one long-lasting drift does the damage. Long unmowed fall grass, leaf litter and lush late-fall growth from heavy nitrogen all give the fungus more tissue to work with.
Identification
- Gray snow mold — Penn State’s description is the most useful one written: “white or tan crusted patches of dead and matted leaf blades, similar in appearance to papier mâché.” Once you have the papier-mâché image you will not mistake it. “Patches can range from a few inches to several feet in diameter.”
- Pink snow mold — “pink, white, or tan patches of dead and matted leaf blades”, with “copper-colored turfgrass plants” at the edges. Penn State attributes the colour to “fungal mycelium and tiny spore-bearing structures”, which is why it shows best in damp morning light and fades as the patch dries.
On which one is worse, be careful with what you read elsewhere — including an earlier version of this page. Penn State records pink snow mold damaging “leaves, stems, and crowns” rather than leaves alone, so it does reach deeper than gray. But their outlook for both is the same: most mature turf “recovers when temperatures warm and leaf growth resumes in spring.” Pink is the more serious of the two on paper and still usually not fatal to an established lawn.
If the patch fits neither description, the season is the fastest way to rule snow mold out: it is the one turf disease that does its damage under snow and is already finished when you find it. Lawn fungus identification sorts the rest by patch shape and timing, and the two that get confused with a spring melt-out are brown patch and dollar spot — both of which need warm weather to start.

Usually not, and this is the part worth reading before you buy anything. Penn State on gray snow mold:
“In most cases, mature turfgrass affected by gray snow mold tends to recover quickly when temperatures warm and leaf growth resumes in spring.”
And on whether to reach for a product:
“Gray snow mold usually can be managed in lawns without using fungicides.”
Their pink snow mold page draws the line in the same place, listing fungicide as warranted for “high-value turf, such as golf course putting greens, tees, and fairways; sports fields; and recently seeded lawns.”
Notice the one home-lawn case on that list. A lawn seeded the previous autumn has seedlings rather than mature crowns, and mature crowns are what the recovery above depends on. If you seeded in September and there is snow mold in March, you are in the exception. If your lawn is established, you are almost certainly not — rake the patch, let it dry, and let spring do the work.
Prevention
Snow mold prevention happens entirely in the fall:
- Mow until growth stops — drop the final cut about a half inch shorter than summer height. Illinois Extension names the cost of skipping this: “allowing the grass to remain excessively high at the end of fall encourages weed and disease problems” — snow mold first among them, because long blades are what mat under snow. - No heavy nitrogen after mid-fall — lush, soft growth entering winter is fungus food. The safe feeding window in Michigan: April through October, and MSU is specific that applications should go down before November — later nitrogen leaches over winter rather than feeding the grass.
- Remove leaves and debris — anything that mats under snow incubates mold
- Spread out plow piles — the deepest, longest-lasting snow banks are where damage is worst every spring

Does snow mold go away on its own?
Gray snow mold usually stops spreading once the lawn dries and temperatures rise above 45°F, and matted areas often recover with raking. Pink snow mold is more serious — it can kill the crowns of the plant, so damaged areas may need overseeding.
Should I apply fungicide for snow mold in spring?
No, and for most lawns the honest answer goes further than that. By the time you see snow mold the disease is finishing its active window, so spring treatment is aimed at something already over. How do I prevent snow mold next year?
Penn State's list is short and none of it is chemical: mowing turf well into the fall, avoiding the creation of long-lasting snowbanks on turf when removing and piling snow from sidewalks and driveways, and using only moderate amounts of nitrogen fertilizer on turf in fall. The snowbank item is the one people miss — where you throw the snow off the drive decides where the mould is in April, because deeper and longer-lasting cover means more injury. Rake leaves off too: anything that mats under snow gives the fungus wet tissue to work on.
