Microclover Lawn Pros and Cons: The Permanent Trade-Off

Microclover fixes its own nitrogen and feeds bees. It also ends whole-lawn broadleaf spraying forever, and dies back in winter. Extension seeding rates inside.

Almost every guide to microclover lists the same benefits, and almost none of them lead with the thing that actually decides it.

Seeding clover means you stop spraying broadleaf herbicide on your lawn. Forever.

Illinois Extension puts it in one sentence: “Most broadleaf herbicides labeled for use in lawns will kill microclover.” Clover is a broadleaf. So is the dandelion you wanted to spray next spring.

Everything else on this page is a trade you can weigh. That one is a door that closes.

The Door That Closes

Start here because it is irreversible in a way nothing else on this page is.

Clover is a broadleaf plant. Every selective broadleaf herbicide sold for lawns — the three-way products, the dandelion sprays, the weed-and-feed bags — is designed to kill broadleaf plants while leaving grass alone. It cannot tell your clover from a dandelion, because botanically there is nothing to tell.

UMN’s bee lawn guidance arrives at the same place from the maintenance side: hand weeding is what they recommend, both while the lawn establishes and over the long term, and they suggest learning “to tolerate a few weeds that are beneficial to pollinators.”

There is exactly one partial exception, and it is narrower than it sounds. UMN notes that crabgrass pre-emergent herbicides “can be a safer option as far as non-grasses are concerned” — because they target germinating grassy weeds rather than established broadleaves. So a pre-emergent programme survives the switch. Weed-and-feed does not.

Ask yourself honestly how you currently handle weeds. If the answer is a hose-end sprayer once each spring, microclover ends that habit. If the answer is that you already spot-treat and pull, you are giving up very little.

What You Actually Gain

Three things, and they are genuine.

Nitrogen made on site. Clovers are legumes. Illinois: they “pull nitrogen from the air and convert it into nitrogen in the soil”, and the seed “often comes coated with a Rhizobium bacterium – a natural organism that the plant needs to fix nitrogen.” UMN is blunter about the consequence: white clover “doesn’t need to be fertilized with nitrogen, making it a good part of a low-input lawn.”

Bee forage that is genuinely good, not token. UMN found 56 bee species on white clover alone, and rates it precisely: “Its pollen has a high protein content… and the nectar has a high sugar content.” Bloom runs “from the end of May to October, with a peak of flowering in June.”

A uniform look, which is the whole point of micro. Illinois: common white clover “sometimes forms clumps and competes with desirable turfgrass, resulting in a non-uniform lawn appearance”, while microclover has “smaller leaves and a slower, less aggressive growth habit” and “mixes better with most turfgrass species than common white clover when seeded at appropriate rates.” Two named cultivars: ‘Pirouette’ and ‘Pipolina’.

Seeding Rates: By The Ounce

This is where most microclover lawns are lost, and the numbers are not intuitive.

UMN Extension’s published bee lawn rate, per 1,000 square feet:

Look at the ratio: the clover is about one-fortieth of the grass by weight. People who eyeball it, or who reason that more clover means more nitrogen, end up with a clover field that happens to contain grass.

A pre-mixed bee lawn blend off the shelf “usually has a recommended rate of 5 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet” with a similar species proportion. UMN adds that actual rates “can vary depending on the density of plants already present in your lawn and the planting method used.”

Two more specifics worth having:

  • Mow low first. Illinois: “Mow the grass low before seeding. Set the mower to the lowest setting to reduce competition.”
  • Timing. UMN’s researchers find the best establishment windows are spring or late fall, by overseeding or full renovation. Our overseeding guide covers the grass side of that window.

Buy a cultivar adapted to your region. UMN flags this specifically: “there are white clover varieties for southern states that will not do well in the Midwest.” The bag on the shelf may have travelled a long way from where its variety was bred.

And note Illinois’s supply warning — the seed is “expensive and not readily available in retail stores.” Order it; do not expect to find it beside the fescue.

Which raises a distinction worth being precise about before you buy. The rate table above is UMN’s bee lawn specification, and the species in it is standard Dutch white clover — not one of the named microclover cultivars discussed earlier. They are the same species doing the same nitrogen fixing, and standard white clover is far easier to find and cheaper by the pound. What you give up is the one thing micro is selected for: the smaller leaf and less aggressive habit that let it blend into turf instead of reading as patches of clover. If a uniform lawn appearance is why you are here, pay for the named cultivar. If pollinators and nitrogen are why you are here, the standard species is what the research above actually used.

And here is the trap this section opened with, sitting in plain sight on the bag you are most likely to buy. Its stated rate is 1/4 to 1/2 pound per 1,000 square feet. UMN’s bee lawn rate, in the table above, is 1.1 ounces over the same ground — between a quarter and an eighth of it.

Neither number is wrong. A seed supplier is selling clover to people establishing a clover stand, a pasture or a cover crop, and for that job the bag is right. UMN is specifying a clover fraction inside a lawn that is still mostly grass. If you follow the bag while wanting the second outcome, you will get the first one — which is exactly how people end up with a clover field that happens to contain grass, and it will have been the bag’s instructions that got them there. Weigh the ounces.

Living With It Afterwards

Two maintenance habits change permanently, and both run against instinct.

Mow higher, mow less. UMN’s established bee lawn guidance: at least 3 inches or more, and every 2 to 3 weeks rather than weekly. Plus a rule no conventional lawn has — “hold off on mowing when bee lawn flowers are in full bloom to allow pollinators time to forage.” Recycle the clippings; UMN notes this may help spread developed seed. And plan on reseeding, because the plant does not intend to stay. Penn State describes the species plainly: white clover is “a short-lived perennial that can reseed under favorable conditions, rapidly grow, and spread via stolons.” Read the whole sentence rather than the “perennial” in it — short-lived, and persistence depends on reseeding under favorable conditions. A clover lawn kept mown short enough to prevent flowering is a clover lawn denied the mechanism it uses to replace itself, which is one reason a stand that looked established in year two can thin in year four.

That also puts a floor under the mowing height from a second direction: Penn State notes white clover “can be grazed to about 1 inch without seriously damaging the stand”, so an inch is the plant’s tolerance rather than its preference — and the three inches above is what keeps it flowering and self-sustaining rather than merely surviving.

Stop fertilizing, and understand why. This is the counterintuitive one. UMN: “if you fertilize too much, not only is it potentially unfriendly to the environment, it is favoring turfgrass over your bee lawn plants. That means more grass and fewer flowers.” Their guidance for an established bee lawn is little to no supplemental fertilizer — “not more than one light application of lawn fertilizer in the fall, if that.”

So feeding the lawn is now actively counterproductive to the thing you planted it for. If you enjoy the fertilizer calendar, this is another habit you are giving up.

Who Should Not Plant It

Illinois lists the disqualifying conditions, and they are worth reading as disqualifications rather than as caveats:

High heat and drought. It “does not tolerate” them. That rules out a great deal of the South and the arid West.

Shade. It “does not do well in shady conditions.” UMN is a shade softer on white clover generally — “tolerant of some shade, though it may bloom sparsely without enough sun” — but sparse bloom deletes the pollinator benefit, which was half the reason. For a shaded lawn, growing grass in shade is the more honest guide.

Anywhere winter bare spots matter. “Top growth dies back in the winter, which can leave bare spots and lead to erosion.” On a slope, that is soil movement, not just appearance.

Anyone unwilling to reseed. It “may require reseeding for long-term growth.” This is not a plant-once lawn.

If You Are Growing Clover On Purpose, At Scale

Everything above is about clover in a lawn, where the herbicide answer is none. On a clover or alfalfa plot — a food plot, a legume pasture, an interseeded stand — the answer changes, because three chemistries are selective enough to spare the legume.

Broadleaf weeds in clover looks impossible, since clover is itself a broadleaf. 2,4-DB is the exception, and the reason is biochemical: legumes are far slower to convert it into the herbicidally active form than many broadleaf weeds are.

None of this transfers to a lawn. These are plot and paddock products at plot and paddock rates, and the reason the lawn answer is different is that in a lawn the clover is a minority component you cannot spray around. See pasture weed control for the grazed version.

The Honest Verdict

Microclover suits a specific owner: full sun, moderate climate, already spot-treats rather than blanket-sprays, willing to mow high and reseed occasionally, and actively wants fewer fertilizer applications. For that person it is a genuinely good decision with real research behind it.

It suits almost nobody who wants a uniform, sprayable, low-thought lawn — and there is nothing wrong with wanting that.

One last piece of perspective, from UMN, which we include because it is the sort of thing a seed company will not tell you: bee lawns “aren’t as valuable to pollinators as plantings with a full complement of native perennials, trees and shrubs.” UMN frames a bee lawn as “a nice enhancement to your other garden plants for pollinators”, not as the main event. If the pollinator benefit is your primary motive, a planted bed will do more for bees than converting the lawn will — and it will not cost you your herbicide options.

Can you use weed killer on a microclover lawn?

No, and this is the decision the whole thing turns on. Illinois Extension states plainly that most broadleaf herbicides labeled for use in lawns will kill microclover. Clover is a broadleaf, so every product that removes dandelion, plantain or creeping Charlie removes your clover too. UMN's guidance for bee lawns is the same in practice: hand weeding is recommended, both during establishment and over the long term. There is one partial exception UMN identifies — crabgrass pre-emergent herbicides can be a safer option as far as non-grasses are concerned, since they target germinating grassy weeds. But whole-lawn broadleaf spraying is over, permanently, from the day you seed.

Does microclover die back in winter?

The top growth does, and Illinois Extension names the consequence rather than glossing it: top growth dies back in the winter, which can leave bare spots and lead to erosion. This is the practical cost people are least prepared for. A lawn that looked uniform in July can look patchy from late autumn through early spring, and on any slope those gaps are where soil moves. Illinois also notes microclover may require reseeding for long-term growth, so budget for periodic overseeding rather than treating establishment as a one-off.

Will microclover work in shade or in a hot climate?

Poorly in both, and these are the two site conditions that disqualify it outright. Illinois Extension states microclover does not tolerate high heat and drought and does not do well in shady conditions. UMN's description of white clover is slightly softer on shade — tolerant of some shade, though it may bloom sparsely without enough sun — but sparse bloom removes the pollinator benefit that is half the reason people plant it. Practically: full sun and a moderate climate is where this works. A hot Southern lawn or a shaded northern one is the wrong site, and no seeding rate fixes that.

Does microclover replace fertilizer?

It reduces nitrogen applications rather than eliminating all feeding, and there is a catch worth knowing.
