Brown Patch Treatment: Fungicide Alone Won't Fix It
Brown patch treatment needs two things: the right fungicide, and the summer nitrogen habit that caused it. Fungicide alone buys you a repeat next July. Guide for Montana, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

Circular brown rings expanding through your lawn in warm, muggy weather are the signature of brown patch — Rhizoctonia solani — the most common summer fungal disease in American lawns. Caught early, it’s very treatable. Ignored, it can hollow out whole sections of turf that take a full season to recover.

Why Brown Patch Happens
Brown patch needs three things at once, and summer reliably provides all three:
One pathogen, two names. Both brown patch and large patch are Rhizoctonia solani — Ohio State names it for the cool-season disease and UF/IFAS for the warm-season one. Same fungus, different grass, opposite seasons, which is why the advice below splits by lawn type rather than by symptom.
- Temperature. Ohio State ties the treatment calendar to night air rather than day heat: “the first application should be made when the night air temperatures do not fall below 67°F.” Read that as the trigger for acting, not the moment infection starts.
- Moisture. Wet leaves for long enough. UF/IFAS quantifies it for large patch — infection is triggered by rainfall, excessive irrigation or high humidity “resulting in the leaves being continuously wet for 48 hours or more” — and the mechanism is the same on a fescue lawn even where the published hours differ.
- Fuel. Ohio State: “avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer applications, especially in warm and wet weather.” UF/IFAS adds the form as well as the amount: “slow-release nitrogen sources should be used as opposed to readily available forms.”
Identification
Check these markers before reaching for fungicide, because drought stress, grubs and dog urine all mimic brown patch — and if none of them fit, lawn fungus identification sorts the rest by patch shape and season, or the free Lawn Health Analyzer runs the same differential as a symptom questionnaire in your browser:
- Shape — roughly circular patches. Ohio State’s size for low-cut turf is “a few inches to 2 feet in diameter”; UF/IFAS describes large patch starting at “about 1 ft in diameter” and expanding to “several feet”, so a very large patch on a warm-season lawn is the more likely reading.
- The ring — Ohio State gives it a colour, which is more useful than “darker”: “a dark purplish gray smoke-ring border on the outer edge of diseased areas.” Look at dawn, in dew.
- Blades — Ohio State describes affected leaves as “gray and grungy-looking”, and explicitly separates that from the tan hourglass lesion, which belongs to dollar spot. If you are looking at a neat tan lesion with a dark border on an individual blade, check that page before this one.
- Pull test, with a detail worth using — UF/IFAS: “a soft, dark rot occurs at the base of the leaf and leaves can easily be pulled off the stem”, and the base carries “a rotted odor”. Smell it. Nothing else on the differential list does that.
- Timing — after warm, humid nights rather than after dry heat.

- Necrotic ring spot on Kentucky Bluegrass, worst on sodded lawns a few years in
- Ascochyta leaf blight in humid spells
- Dollar spot
- Iron chlorosis on the alkaline plains soils, which is a nutrient-availability problem misread as a nitrogen shortage

- Voles, which work under long snow cover and leave the whole lawn patterned with runways at melt
- White grubs, a lighter pressure here than in the humid Midwest

Look for the smoke ring at dawn and lesioned blades at patch margins. Treating drought stress with fungicide wastes money and delays the real fix.

The granular azoxystrobin product claims up to four weeks of protection, so that is the interval to work from — neither extension source we cite publishes a reapplication figure, and Ohio State refers readers to its own bulletin for current rates. If conditions are still favourable when it lapses, follow up with propiconazole rather than repeating azoxystrobin: rotating chemical classes is our standing practice against resistant strains.
Repair the dead centersAfter outbreak ends
Rake out dead material and patch. Warm-season lawns usually creep back in on their own; cool-season lawns need overseeding in fall.

Step five of the plan above has a purchase attached and it is not a fungicide. Brown patch kills in rings and leaves dead centres, and on the grass it hits hardest — tall fescue — nothing grows sideways to close them. A fungicide stops the spread; it does not refill what was lost.

And there is a way to buy this disease by overcorrecting a different one: red thread is what an underfed cool-season lawn gets in a wet spring, and feeding your way out of it too fast is how the same lawn ends up here in summer.
Fungicide treats outbreaks; culture prevents them.
- Water at dawn, never at dusk — the highest-impact change on this list
- Go easy on summer nitrogen — slow-release only, at reduced rates, in disease season. Note the limit of that rule: dollar spot is the one disease that gets worse when the lawn is underfed, so confirm which you have first
- Mow sharp and bag clippings during outbreaks — dull blades shred tissue and spread mycelium; infected clippings reseed the fungus
- Dethatch and aerate — thatch over a half inch is a fungal hotel
- Improve airflow — patches that recur in the same shaded, still corner every year are telling you to prune

Frequently Asked Questions
Does brown patch go away on its own?
Sometimes — brown patch is driven by weather, and activity stops when humidity drops or temperatures leave the 65–90°F range. But the fungus survives in soil and thatch, so untreated lawns usually see it return in the next favorable window, often worse.
What is the best fungicide for brown patch?
Azoxystrobin and propiconazole are the two most effective residential options. Azoxystrobin gives longer systemic protection (up to 28 days); propiconazole knocks down active infections faster. Rotating between them prevents resistance.
Should I water a lawn with brown patch?
Water only in the early morning, and only when the lawn actually needs it. Evening irrigation is the single biggest brown patch accelerator — blades staying wet overnight give the fungus its required 10+ hours of leaf wetness.
Can I fertilize during a brown patch outbreak?
Avoid it. Fast-release nitrogen feeds the fungus more than the grass and produces the lush, tender growth Rhizoctonia loves. Wait until the outbreak is controlled, then resume with a slow-release product.
