Overseeding Bermuda With Ryegrass: 5 lb or 15?
Clemson says 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft. Arizona says 12 to 15. Both are right, and the gap is what winter overseeding is for — plus the spring bill nobody quotes.

Clemson: 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Arizona: 12 to 15.
Neither is wrong. They are describing different lawns, different expectations and — critically — different amounts of trouble next April.
What Overseeding Actually Buys You
Arizona’s opening is the honest framing of the whole practice:
“In the lower elevation desert of Arizona, the warm-season turfgrasses (bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and St. Augustinegrass) become dormant and typically lose their green color during winter. Overseeding bermudagrass with a cool-season grass provides a yearlong green lawn.”
That is the entire benefit: colour. Nothing about overseeding improves the bermudagrass underneath it. Clemson is blunt about the direction the effect actually runs:
“Overseeding may even retard the bermudagrass, unless it is managed correctly in the spring, because the ryegrass competes for moisture, sunlight, and nutrients.”
So this is an aesthetic decision with an agronomic cost, and it is worth deciding it as one. If a straw-brown dormant bermuda lawn does not bother you, the correct number of pounds of ryegrass is zero.
And one species note before anything else. Arizona: “St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass generally are not suited for overseeding.” This page is about bermuda.
The Rate Is a Choice, Not a Number
Three programmes, three figures, and reading them as a scale rather than a disagreement is the useful move:

Clemson’s higher figure exists too, and it is for a different job: “10 pounds of ryegrass seed per 1,000 square feet” on bare ground for erosion control rather than over an established lawn.
The rate buys density, and density is what you pay for in April. A thin overseeding gives patchy winter colour and hands the lawn back easily. A heavy one gives a uniform green carpet and a dense cool-season stand sitting on your bermuda exactly when the bermuda is trying to restart.
For a home lawn whose real goal is “not brown”, the bottom of that range is the sensible read. The top of it is a golf-course expectation, and Arizona is writing for a region where that is the norm.

Perennial, which is the one both sources name

Both programmes rank them the same way and for the same reasons.
Alabama: “Grown as an annual, perennial ryegrass is superior to annual ryegrass due to its fine texture, dark green color, and some disease tolerance.”
Arizona’s descriptions are the practical version:
- Annual ryegrass — “light green color, coarse leaves, and fast growing”, “requires frequent mowing”, and “inexpensive” where “moderate turf quality is desired”
- Perennial ryegrass — “deep green color, narrow leaves”, “improved frost tolerance with better resistance to diseases”, and “produces a better quality winter turf”
But read Arizona’s third bullet on perennial, because it is the sting: it “persists longer in the spring and competes with bermudagrass that is greening up.”
The better-looking grass is the harder one to remove. That is this whole practice compressed into one line, and it is why the spring section below is not optional reading. Perennial ryegrass lawn care covers the species on its own terms.
The Window Is Narrow at Both Ends
Two triggers, one window, described from two climates:
Clemson: “Thirty days before the first frost, when daytime highs are near 70°F and nighttime lows are usually above 50°F.”
Arizona: “October is ideal for overseeding when daytime air temperatures are 80-85°F and nighttimes are about 55°F.”
And Arizona names both ways to miss it:
“Overseeding too early when temperatures are warmer favors bermudagrass and prevents the winter grass from getting established. Later overseedings may be threatened by frost when young seedling grasses may be damaged.”
Too early and your own bermuda outcompetes the seedlings. Too late and frost takes them. The target is the fortnight when bermuda has slowed but the ground is still warm enough to germinate ryegrass — which is roughly a month ahead of the frost date most people are watching.
Alabama’s window for its own state is “September and October.” Your first frost date is on the state hub for where you live.
The Sequence Arizona Publishes
This is the most complete published procedure we found, and the preparation starts a month before the seed does. Reproduced as their table gives it:

Three details in there are worth pulling out.
The half-and-half spreading pattern. Arizona: apply “one-half of the seed by walking the spreader in one direction and the other half of the seed by walking in a pattern perpendicular to the first pass.” That is what prevents the striping a single pass leaves — the same logic as broadcast vs drop spreader.
The clippings stay. The final low mow leaves clippings “as mulch for the overseeded seed” — free mulch, already on site, exactly where the seed is.
The verticutting timing. Arizona is specific that heavy work belongs earlier: “Verticutting and aerifying should have been done during the summer when bermudagrass was vigorous and actively growing.” At overseeding time it is only “shallow, vertical mowings or lightly dethatch” for seed contact. Watering is the opposite of normal
Clemson: “Water the lawn lightly two or three times daily until the seeds germinate” — and “do not overwater, as this will wash seed away.”
Arizona: “Irrigate 3 to 4 times per day for the first 7 to 10 days, until seedlings emerge. Do not allow germinating seed to dry out.”
Then it inverts. Once established, Arizona says to “gradually reduce watering interval to about once a week”, with the top six inches of soil staying moist — and gives a field test for it: if a long screwdriver “easily penetrates the soil to a depth of six inches and comes out damp, no additional irrigation is needed.”
Frequent-and-shallow for ten days, then deep-and-infrequent for the rest of the winter. How often to water your lawn is about the second half; the first ten days are the exception.
The Spring Transition Is the Bill
Everything above is the easy part. The handover back to bermuda is where overseeded lawns get damaged, and it starts on a temperature rather than a date.
Arizona:
“Bermudagrass resumes growth when spring nighttime temperatures remain above 60°F for seven consecutive nights. This generally occurs during April to May.”
Seven consecutive nights above 60°F. That is the signal to stop managing for ryegrass and start managing against it.
The two programmes push on different levers, and they are not contradictory — they are the same squeeze from either side:
Arizona — feed the bermuda:
- “Lower mowing heights by 35% and mow more often”
- “Apply nitrogen fertilizer weekly at a rate of 0.25 lb/1000 ft²”
- “Do not stop irrigating. Any drying could slow bermudagrass growth”
- Once 80% bermuda, “lightly verticutting to remove the ryegrass”, plus 0.25–0.50 lb N and a week of reduced water, repeated
Clemson — starve the ryegrass:
- Stop fertilizer “no later than mid-to-late January”
- Keep the lawn dry to stress the ryegrass
- “Mow the ryegrass down to one-inch height, which will weaken it”
Alabama names the tools if it does not go quietly: “vertical mow, aerify, or apply a selective herbicide to aid in the removal of the ryegrass.”
Note that Arizona and Clemson disagree about water in spring, and the disagreement is real rather than sloppy. Clemson is drying the ryegrass out in a climate where rainfall will forgive it; Arizona will not stop irrigating because in a desert the bermuda pays for that drought too. Follow the one that matches your rainfall.
The 100-Day Rule
The precondition almost nobody quotes, and the one that should decide whether you do this at all. Arizona:
“During the summer, bermudagrass should grow for 100 days to establish and grow vigorous roots and rhizomes. After 100 days of active growth, overseeding may be accomplished successfully.”
A bermuda lawn that had a poor summer is not a candidate. If it was thin, shaded, under-fed, or spent the season recovering from something, adding a competitive cool-season grass on top of it takes from a plant that has nothing to give. Skip the year, fix the bermuda, overseed the next one.
That is also the answer to the recurring version of this question — the lawn that gets overseeded every winter and gets thinner every summer. The ryegrass is not the cause, but it is the annual tax that a weakening lawn cannot keep paying.
The Honest Summary
Winter overseeding buys colour and costs vigour. Clemson says outright it may retard the bermudagrass without correct spring management, and the correct spring management is real work rather than a note at the end.
Pick your rate deliberately. 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a home lawn that mainly wants to not be brown; 12–15 for a dense, uniform stand and a harder April.
Perennial ryegrass, seeded about 30 days before first frost, watered three or four times a day for the first week to ten days and then weekly.
And start the handover on Arizona’s signal — seven consecutive nights above 60°F — by feeding and mowing for the bermuda rather than waiting to see what happens.
If the answer to all of this is that it sounds like a lot of work for colour, that is a legitimate conclusion, and dormant bermuda is a perfectly healthy lawn. Grass paint is the other way people solve the same problem, and it asks nothing of the grass at all.
