Broadcast vs Drop Spreader: The Edge Decides It
Rotary spreaders are faster, drop spreaders are exact — and the deciding factor is what borders your lawn. Plus the 10-minute calibration both types need.

Every fertilizer, seed and granular product guide on this site ends with the same unstated step: something has to put the product on the lawn, evenly, at the rate the label says. That something is a spreader, the choice is between two mechanisms, and the marketing makes it look harder than it is. One specification — what your lawn borders — decides it for most people.

One Drops, One Throws
A drop spreader meters granules through a row of openings and lets gravity do the rest. Clemson’s description of the result: it distributes material “in a swath equal to the width of the spreader”. The product lands between the wheels, full stop.
A broadcast spreader — rotary, spinner and cyclone are the same thing — drops the granules onto a spinning disc that flings them outward. Clemson again: it distributes “in a swath much wider than the width of the spreader”.
Everything that matters follows from those two sentences:

Penn State adds the practical notes on each side: rotaries are “popular with lawn care professionals because they can cover large residential and recreational turf areas relatively quickly”, with the caveat “don’t apply lightweight materials on windy days” — while drop spreaders are “very accurate” and “preferable to rotary spreaders for working in small, confined areas”.
The Edge Decides It
The middle of any lawn is easy; both types feed it fine. The purchase decision lives at the edges.
Buy the drop spreader if your lawn has demanding borders. Flower beds where fertilizer burns what it lands on. A pond or stream, where granules in the water are both pollution and, in several states, a legal problem. A driveway that slopes to a storm drain. A neighbour’s tomato patch. A drop spreader’s product physically cannot land outside its wheels, which turns edge work from a skill into a geometry.
Buy the broadcast spreader if you have open ground. Over roughly a quarter acre of uncomplicated lawn, the rotary’s speed stops being a convenience and becomes the difference between a job you do properly and one you rush. Most models also have an edge-guard lever that blocks the throw on one side — useful, though it narrows rather than eliminates the drift.
The honest answer for many established lawns is eventually both: a rotary for the open middle, a small drop spreader for the perimeter pass. But if you are buying one first spreader for a typical suburban lot with pavement on two sides, the broadcast model with an edge guard is the pragmatic single choice — used with the technique below.

The settings chart on the fertilizer bag is a starting point, not a promise. Penn State’s reason is mechanical: actual delivery varies with “differences in ground speed among operators and differences among spreaders”. Your pace is not the test walker’s pace, and your spreader’s gate is not the factory sample.
Clemson’s calibration procedure takes about ten minutes:
- Mark a test strip — 50 or 100 feet.
- Work out the target for that strip. Clemson’s worked example: a 6-foot swath over a 50-foot strip at 20 lbs per 1,000 sq ft means “20 x (6 x 50) ÷ 1000 ft² = 6 lbs” for the strip.
- Load a weighed amount. “Weigh out a known amount of material (10 lbs is a good weight to start with).”
- Walk the strip at your normal pace, then weigh what remains. The difference is what went down.
- Adjust the setting and repeat until delivered matches target.
Do it on a tarp or on pavement you can sweep — and sweep it: Penn State’s instruction is to collect the product “to prevent runoff into turfgrass or storm sewers”. What lands on concrete feeds nothing and drains to the nearest waterway.
The two-pass technique that hides your errors
Whichever spreader you own, the single best application habit comes from Penn State: “calibrate the spreader to deliver half the desired rate of fertilizer, then cover the entire area twice” — the second pass perpendicular to the first.
The logic is that every coverage error halves. A missed stripe from the north–south pass still received the full east–west pass, so instead of a bare-versus-double stripe pattern you get, at worst, a 50%-versus-100% variation the eye cannot find. For a drop spreader, whose error mode is Penn State’s wallpaper problem — passes must sit “exactly adjacent to one another” with neither overlaps nor skips — this is the difference between needing perfection and needing competence.
What This Machine Actually Applies
A spreader is the delivery half of decisions made elsewhere on this site:

Why does my lawn have dark green stripes after fertilizing?
Striping is a coverage error, and each spreader type produces its own version. With a drop spreader, a missed strip between wheel tracks gets no product at all — Penn State's instruction is passes 'exactly adjacent to one another (like laying strips of wallpaper),' avoiding both overlaps and skips. With a rotary, the swath edges taper, so passes spaced too far apart leave underfed bands. The fix for both is the same technique: calibrate to half the target rate and cover the lawn twice in perpendicular directions, which masks any single pass's error.
How do I calibrate a spreader?
Weigh what goes out over a known area.
