Our Verdict
Nothing clever, and that is the appeal. When you repair a bare spot properly you cover the seed to hold moisture and stop birds and runoff taking it, and the cover is worthless if it lifts in the first storm — which is exactly what happens when it is weighted with a couple of bricks. Six-inch 11-gauge galvanized staples pin a straw blanket, erosion mat or landscape fabric to the ground and stay put. They also pin fresh sod on a slope, which is where sod most often slides before it knits. Galvanizing matters if you plan to leave them: bare steel staples rust into the root zone and become something you find with a mower blade later. Two things to know. Six inches is short for loose sandy soil, where 8- or 12-inch pins hold better, and 11 gauge bends if you drive it into stony ground rather than working around the stone.
