Robot Mower vs Lawn Service: It Replaces the Mow, Not the Visit

A robot mower does not edge, trim or blow. Compare it against the mowing line only — then decide who does the edges, because someone still has to.

You are not comparing like with like

Nearly every robot-mower-versus-service comparison puts the machine’s price against the full seasonal service bill, and that comparison is flattering and wrong.

A lawn service crew arrives and does four things: mows, edges, string-trims around beds, posts, trees and the mailbox, and blows clippings off the drive and walks. Many also handle spring and autumn cleanups, and some bundle fertilization and weed control as separate programmes.

A robot mower does exactly one of those.

And the limitation is structural rather than a matter of model choice. UF/IFAS:

“Raised beds or borders often block access, leaving grass along edges to grow taller.”

The machine cannot reach where its wheels cannot go. Every fence line, bed edge, tree ring and post keeps a taller collar of grass, and on most properties that is the difference between a lawn that looks maintained and one that looks nearly maintained.

So before any arithmetic: the honest comparison is the machine against your service’s mowing charge, with the edging handled separately — either by you, or by a smaller visit.

The arithmetic you should actually do

We are deliberately not giving you a national payback figure, because lawn service pricing varies enormously by region and a made-up average would be the least useful thing on this page. Here is the calculation with your own numbers:

1. Isolate the mowing. Ask your provider what the mow alone costs, separate from edging, blowing and cleanups. If the quote is a single number, ask for it split.

2. Annualise it. Mowing charge × visits per season.

3. Price the machine. From our set, $950 to $1,500 at a quarter acre, roughly $2,400 to $3,500 for three quarters of an acre to 1.25 acres, and $4,300 to $5,000 for the two-acre and AWD machines.

4. Add running costs. Small. Electricity is a few hundred watt-hours a day on a battery machine. Blades are consumable and cheap — replacement packs run about $12 to $32 for 30 to 36 blades, and most owners change them every one to two months in season.

5. Add back the edges. Either your own time every week or two, or a reduced-scope visit. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the comparison was honest.

Where the machine genuinely wins

Two places, and only one of them is money.

Frequency, which is an agronomic advantage rather than a convenience. University of Illinois Extension: “remember not to remove more than one-third of the grass leaf in a single cutting”, and lawns should be mowed “according to the rate of grass growth. In the spring, this will likely mean more than once a week.”

A weekly service in May is removing far more than a third at every visit, because the grass grew more than three days’ worth between them. That is not a criticism of the crew — it is what a weekly schedule does to a lawn in peak growth. A machine cutting a small amount daily never crosses the line at all.

And the payoff compounds. Illinois again: when mowing frequency is right, the clippings “readily filter back down into the lawn,” they “readily decompose”, they do “not cause thatch”, and they recycle nitrogen — reducing fertilizer need. Availability. The machine mows in the rain gap, on the day after a holiday, and when the crew is three weeks behind in June. That is worth something no spreadsheet captures.

What a service has that a machine does not

Being fair in the other direction. UF/IFAS lists the ownership risks that come with the machine and not with a crew:

  • Theft — it is a valuable object sitting in an unfenced garden
  • Lightning risk to docking stations
  • Fire ant activity near electrical components
  • Irrigation heads, which “may cause the mower to become unstable, stop operating, and get damaged”

A crew has none of these. They arrive, mow, and leave, and when their equipment breaks it is their problem. When yours breaks in July, the lawn keeps growing while you arrange a repair.

There is also the complexity point: UF/IFAS notes these machines “may struggle in complex landscapes with many obstacles.” A crew does not struggle with obstacles; they walk around them.

The arrangement almost nobody prices

The comparison is usually framed as either/or, and the sensible answer is frequently both:

Buy the machine for the mowing. Keep a reduced-scope visit for the finish work.

Monthly rather than weekly, covering edging, string-trimming, blowing and seasonal cleanup. That captures the daily-cutting benefit the machine provides and the finish the machine cannot deliver, and on most properties it still lands well below a full weekly service.

Many providers will quote edging-only work if asked; few advertise it. It is worth the phone call before deciding this is an either/or decision.

Compare the machine against the mowing line, not the whole invoice, because the machine does one of the four things a crew does. Its real advantage is a mowing frequency no weekly service can match, and Illinois’s one-third rule is the reason that matters agronomically rather than cosmetically. And before treating it as either/or, price the hybrid: the machine for the mow, a monthly visit for the edges the machine will never reach.

Regional pricing varies far too much for a national figure to be useful, which is why we are giving you the arithmetic rather than a number.

What does a robot mower not do?

Edges, and this is the honest limitation. UF/IFAS is explicit that 'raised beds or borders often block access, leaving grass along edges to grow taller' — so the strip along every fence, bed, tree ring and post stays longer than the rest. It also does not blow clippings off hard surfaces, does not collect leaves, and does not do the spring and autumn cleanups most services include. If those matter to how your property looks, they remain someone's job.

That captures the frequency benefit the machine provides and the finish work it cannot, and it is usually still well below a full weekly service. Ask your provider whether they will quote edging-only; many will.
