Robot Mower for Slopes: The Boundary Number Is the Real One
A 45% slope rating can collapse to 15% at the lawn's edge — and the edge is where a sloped yard is steepest. Read both numbers before buying.

The number that collapses at the edge
Robot mower marketing leads with a single slope percentage. Some manufacturers publish a second one, and where they do, it is much lower — the limit at the lawn boundary rather than on an open run.
From our own spec readings:

A third of the headline figure, in the first two cases. And here is why it matters more than any other spec on a sloped property: the steepest ground in a sloped yard is almost always at the edge — the bank falling to a retaining wall, the drop to a driveway, the ditch at the property line. The flat middle is not the problem you are buying the machine to solve.
The mechanism is straightforward. On an open run the mower drives straight up or across the grade. At the boundary it has to turn, and it has to stop without sliding past the mapped line. Traction that is adequate for a straight climb has no margin left for a pivot on the same face.
UF/IFAS adds the complication that exists before slope enters the picture: “raised beds or borders often block access, leaving grass along edges to grow taller.” The perimeter is already the weakest part of a robotic mower’s coverage. Slope compounds it.

Every figure below is from our own reading of the manufacturer’s published specification, with the retrieval date recorded on each product page. Where a boundary figure is not published we say so rather than assuming there is no limit.

Two patterns are worth naming. Everything above 70% is all-wheel drive or a high-traction design, and the two-wheel-drive machines cluster at 30–45%. And the models that publish a boundary figure are not being unhelpful — they are being specific, and the ones that publish nothing have not told you the limit does not exist.
Measure it properly first
Percentage grade is rise over run. A slope dropping 1 foot over 4 feet of horizontal distance is 25%. People misjudge slopes badly by eye, so the conversions are worth holding:
- 30% ≈ 17 degrees
- 45% ≈ 24 degrees
- 70% ≈ 35 degrees
- 80% ≈ 39 degrees — a bank you would not comfortably walk a push mower across
Lay a straight board down the slope, put a level on it, and measure the drop over a known length. Then measure the steepest section separately, and measure it at the edge if the edge is where the fall is.
And do not buy at your exact figure. A published maximum is achieved on dry, well-rooted turf; wet grass, thin cover, leaf litter and soft spring ground all take traction away. A 44% lawn with a 45% machine finds its limit on the first damp morning.

Slope changes the failure modes as well as the traction requirement.
Irrigation heads. UF/IFAS is specific: “possible operational disruption from irrigation heads, which may cause the mower to become unstable, stop operating, and get damaged.” On a slope, heads and drainage channels tend to sit along the contour lines the mower crosses on every pass.
Dock siting. UF/IFAS also flags lightning risk to docking stations and fire ant activity near electrical components. Both argue for placing the dock at the top of a slope on free-draining ground rather than at the wet bottom where water collects.
Edge growth. Expect the perimeter strip to stay taller than the rest, for the access reason UF/IFAS names. On a slope that strip is also the part you least want to strim by hand.
When the answer is not a mower
Above about 84% you are past every machine in our set, and well before that you are choosing between machines at three to five thousand dollars. At that price the honest comparison is not a cheaper robot — it is not mowing the bank at all.
A steep, awkward slope planted with a groundcover or ornamental grasses never needs cutting, never needs a machine that can hold 80%, and removes the maintenance permanently. For a genuine bank rather than a gentle fall, that is frequently both cheaper and better, and it is the option nobody in this category sells.

Measure your steepest section, measure it at the edge, convert it to percentage properly, then buy a machine rated comfortably above it — all-wheel drive if you are past 50%. And if the slope is a genuine bank rather than a gentle fall, price the groundcover before the mower.

On a sloped yard the steepest ground is usually at the edge, against a wall, a drive or a ditch, so the boundary figure is the one that decides whether the mower works.
Why is the boundary slope limit so much lower?
Because the boundary is where the machine turns rather than drives straight, and it is where it must stop reliably without sliding past the mapped edge. A mower that climbs a 45% face on a straight run has no traction margin left for a pivot on the same grade — and if it slides at the edge, it leaves the mapped area. Do I need all-wheel drive?
Above roughly 50% grade, in practice yes. AWD costs more and the highest-rated AWD models are not the cheapest in our set, so the question is whether your steepest section genuinely exceeds what a 45% machine handles.
How do I measure my slope as a percentage?
Percentage grade is rise over run: a slope that drops 1 foot over 4 feet of horizontal distance is 25%. The conversions worth knowing, because people badly misjudge slopes by eye: 30% is about 17 degrees, 45% is about 24 degrees, and 80% is about 39 degrees — genuinely steep, the kind of bank you would not comfortably push a mower across.
