Best Robot Mower for Large Yards: Width Beats Capacity

Capacity is not throughput
Every robot mower is sold on an area figure — a quarter acre, an acre, two acres. On a small lawn that figure is all you need, because any of these machines has more hours in the week than the lawn has grass.
On a large lawn it stops being sufficient, and the reason is that the same acre rating can be achieved two completely different ways:
- With a wide deck, covering the ground in fewer passes.
- With more hours, covering the ground slowly but relentlessly.
Both are legitimate engineering. Only one of them keeps up in the peak growth weeks of May, when a cool-season lawn is producing more leaf per day than at any other point in the year.
The clearest illustration is in our own spec readings. The Husqvarna Automower 440 iQ is rated for 2 acres — on a 9.4-inch cutting deck. The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000 is rated for 1.25 acres — on a 15.7-inch deck. The Husqvarna reaches the bigger number by working far more hours, not by cutting more grass per pass.
The spec nobody compares

A 16.9-inch deck covers the same ground in roughly 40% fewer passes than a 9.4-inch one. On a quarter acre nobody notices. On an acre it is the difference between a lawn that looks cut and one that is always slightly behind.
Where manufacturers publish actual throughput, the spread confirms it: the LUBA 3 AWD 5000 publishes 5,400 sq ft per hour, while the Navimow i110N publishes 861 to 1,292. That is four to six times, and it tracks deck width closely.
The other half: duty cycle
Throughput per hour only matters multiplied by hours available, and that is the runtime and charge cycle. Our spec readings give both for the Husqvarna models:
- 440 iQ — 138 minutes running, 54 charging. About 72% of its time is productive.
- 420 iQ — 84 running, 54 charging. About 61%.
- 410 iQ — 84 running, 108 charging. About 44% — it spends more time on the dock than on the lawn.
That last line is worth sitting with. On a half-acre lawn a machine with a 9.4-inch deck and a 44% duty cycle is doing a genuinely small amount of cutting per day, and it is the reason our rating for that model is the lowest of the Husqvarna range.
The Mammotion LUBA 3 machines publish a 215-minute runtime, the longest in our set, which is the other way to buy throughput.
Why keeping up is an agronomic question, not a tidiness one
The reason throughput matters on a large lawn is not appearance. It is the one-third rule. University of Illinois Extension: “remember not to remove more than one-third of the grass leaf in a single cutting” — and “lawns should be mowed according to the rate of grass growth. In the spring, this will likely mean more than once a week.”
A robot mower that cannot keep pace in May is not simply behind schedule. Each time it reaches a section it removes more than a third of the leaf, and Illinois names the consequence: “opportunities for weed growth.” The machine that keeps up is protecting the density that excludes weeds; the one that falls behind is repeatedly scalping and opening the stand.
The same source explains the upside of keeping pace: when mowing is frequent enough, “clippings will readily filter back down into the lawn, and need not to be collected” — they “readily decompose”, do “not cause thatch”, and recycle nitrogen. That nutrient return is the strongest agronomic argument for a robot mower on a big lawn, and it only works if the machine is actually cutting a small amount often. This is a page about large-yard machines, so it should carry the position that argues against them. UF/IFAS describes autonomous mowers as “best suited for” “small to medium-sized lawns” and “less suitable for very large or complex landscapes.”
That is not a claim these machines fail at an acre — they are sold and rated for it. It is a reminder that the difficulty scales with more than area. UF/IFAS notes they “may struggle in complex landscapes with many obstacles” and that “raised beds or borders often block access, leaving grass along edges to grow taller.” A large lawn tends to come with more of exactly those: outbuildings, tree rings, bed edges, a septic mound, a gravel drive.
So the honest question at this size is not acres. It is acres of what shape.
The large-yard failure mode nobody mentions
Every machine in our set navigates by satellite RTK combined with vision or LiDAR. RTK needs a clear view of the sky, and a large property is more likely to have a corner that does not have one.
The pattern is specific: the lawn maps successfully, runs for weeks, and then loses position in the one section ringed by mature trees or shadowed by the house from the reference antenna. Before committing three to five thousand dollars, work out where the dock and antenna can sit and whether any part of the lawn is under heavy canopy.

It is the share of the day the machine is actually cutting rather than charging. Our spec readings give runtime and charge time for the Husqvarna models: the 440 iQ runs 138 minutes and charges 54, so roughly 72% of its time is productive. The 410 iQ runs 84 minutes and charges 108 — it spends more time charging than mowing, a 44% duty cycle. On a small lawn that is irrelevant. Is a robot mower even the right tool for a very large lawn?
Extension is more cautious here than the marketing is, and it is worth hearing. UF/IFAS describes autonomous mowers as 'best suited for' 'small to medium-sized lawns' and 'less suitable for very large or complex landscapes.' The machines rated for one to two acres exist and work, but they cost three to five thousand dollars, they need reliable RTK signal across the whole area, and a complex acre with beds, trees and outbuildings is exactly the 'complex landscape' that caveat is about.
What about signal coverage across a big property?
This is the large-yard failure mode people do not anticipate. Every machine we track navigates by RTK satellite positioning combined with vision or LiDAR, and RTK needs sky. A one-acre lawn ringed by mature trees, or split by a house that blocks the reference signal, can map fine and then lose position in one corner. Before buying at this size, check where the dock and reference antenna can go and whether any part of the lawn sits under a heavy canopy.
