Spraying Weed Killer in Hot Weather — and in Cold

Nebraska: best performance at 60–75°F, and avoid glyphosate below 40°F. Purdue: hot dry weather thickens the leaf cuticle, so the plant physically resists uptake.

Nearly every guide on this gives you a ceiling. Very few give you the other end, and the other end is where a lot of wasted product goes.

University of Nebraska Extension states the whole range in one sentence:

“Best performance usually occurs when the temperature is 60-75°F at application and remains there for a few hours afterward.”

Sixty to seventy-five. Not “under ninety”. That is a considerably narrower window than most people spray in, at both ends.

The two ends fail differently, and that difference should change how you feel about each.

Cold mostly wastes your product. The weed is not growing much, so it does not take much up, and what it takes up moves slowly. Your lawn is fine. You have spent an afternoon and a tank for a partial result.

Heat also damages your lawn. That is a different category of mistake, and it is why the advice above 90°F is wait rather than be careful.

Four Ways Heat Costs You

Clemson Extension’s heat article names three mechanisms. Purdue’s glyphosate publication supplies a fourth that is arguably the most interesting, because it is about the leaf itself.

1. The weed has stopped growing

“The weedy plants you are going after may suspend their growth, meaning that the plant processes that most herbicides attack may also be suspended, equating to limited control.”

Most herbicides interrupt a process — amino acid synthesis, growth regulation, photosynthesis. A plant that has paused those processes is not offering the target.

2. The leaf surface physically changes

This is Purdue’s addition, and it explains why the previous point is not the whole story:

“During dry or hot weather, plants conserve water through changes in both the composition and thickness of the cuticle on the leaf surface. These changes influence herbicide absorption and performance.”

The weed is not just idle, it is armoured. The waxy layer your spray has to cross gets thicker and chemically different when the plant is conserving water — which is the same barrier that makes wild violet and wild garlic hard to treat even in perfect weather, now applied to everything in the lawn.

3. Your grass has to metabolise it

“Your desired grass is also experiencing the heat stress, so adding products that the plant still must break down increases the workload and can lead to decline, even if the grass is normally tolerant of the herbicide; this is especially true for cool season grasses like tall fescue.”

Selectivity is not a wall, it is a metabolic race — the turf survives because it breaks the herbicide down faster than the weed does. Heat-stress the turf and you slow the thing that was protecting it. A tall fescue lawn in August is the worst case in this whole article: minimum uptake by the weed, minimum tolerance in the grass.

4. It may not stay where you put it

“Depending on the herbicide, liquids can switch to a gaseous form (volatilization) and move off site, causing damage to desirable plants, an event commonly referred to as drift.”

This one is formulation-specific, and it is the ester question. Ester concentrates cross waxy leaves and bark better than amine salts, which is exactly why brush products use them — and the same property makes them more willing to leave as vapour on a warm day. You can apply an ester correctly, walk away, and have it arrive on a neighbour’s tomatoes hours later. And drought stacks on all four

Clemson again: “During periods of little to no rainfall, soil moisture is reduced, leading to the reduction in the amount of water absorbed by the plant, which also reduces the necessary amount of herbicide being consumed by a weedy plant leading to reduced control.”

A hot, dry August gives you all of it at once — a weed that is not growing, is armoured, and is drinking less, on a lawn less able to cope.

The Cold End Nobody Mentions

Three figures from Nebraska Extension, and they matter most in late autumn when people are trying to squeeze in one last application.

  • Below 60°F: “weed growth slows, resulting in slower herbicide uptake and translocation.”
  • Below 40°F: “avoid applying glyphosate-based herbicides.”
  • A frost coming: “If a severe frost is predicted immediately following an intended application, it may be advisable to avoid spraying.”

Slower is not the same as none, which is why autumn applications still work and are often the strongest window of the year for perennial broadleaf weeds — the plant is actively moving sugars to its roots and carries the herbicide with them. The failure is at the far end of autumn, when the temperature has dropped below the band and the plant has essentially stopped.

The frost caution is worth reading twice because the mechanism is the same one Nebraska names elsewhere: “If weeds are damaged or under stress before herbicide has properly translocated, control may be reduced.” A frost is damage. It arrives after the spray and interrupts the journey.

Early Morning Is Not Automatically Better

Here is a genuine conflict between two pieces of sound advice, and we would rather show it than pick one silently.

The heat argument says spray early: temperature is lowest, turf stress is lowest, the whole of this page supports it.

Purdue’s glyphosate research points the other way:

“Glyphosate activity can decline when applications are made early in the morning or in the evening.”

Their explanation is mechanical rather than chemical — “day-to-night leaf movements”. The leaves of many species hang vertically after sunset and lift parallel to the ground during the day, so at dawn and dusk a weed presents less surface to intercept your spray. It is the same leaf-area-versus-spray problem as mowing before you spray, arriving from a different direction.

Purdue’s own resolution is the practical one: reduced activity from morning or evening applications “is most likely with difficult to control weeds or when applying marginal herbicide rates”. So:

  • Small, susceptible weeds — early morning is fine, and the cooler temperature is a real win.
  • Large or hard-to-kill weeds — mid-morning onward, once the foliage has lifted, provided you are inside the temperature band.
  • A hot day where nothing can wait — early morning and spot treatment, accepting a partial result rather than broadcasting over a stressed lawn.

What Labels Actually Say

Purdue is candid about why you cannot simply read the bottle and be done:

“Most herbicide labels contain vague statements regarding environmental influences on herbicide performance.”

Where a label is specific, that figure governs — and the variation between products is larger than people expect:

We had that product overstated ourselves until we read the label, and the correction is worth being explicit about: describing it as the exception for hot weather implied a freedom the label does not grant. It carries no general prohibition, which is genuinely different from a 2,4-D product. It also carries two specific ones.

The Practical Rule

Target 60 to 75°F, and hold it for a few hours after — Nebraska’s band, not a ceiling.

Above 90°F, wait. Not spray carefully: wait. Four mechanisms are working against you and one of them damages your lawn rather than just wasting your money.

Below 60°F, expect less, and below 40°F leave glyphosate in the shed. A frost forecast is a reason to postpone.

Read your own label’s number if it has one, and use 90°F as the default if it does not.

And take Nebraska’s conclusion at face value, because it is the least glamorous and most reliable advice on the subject:

“The ideal solution is to wait for better weather conditions.”

“Better” has a second half. Temperature is one weather variable; the other is what falls out of the sky afterwards, and it is governed by the weed rather than the bottle — will rain wash away weed killer covers the rain-free period the same way this page covers the temperature band. A perfect 68°F morning still fails if a storm arrives inside the window.

If something genuinely cannot wait through a hot spell, spot-treat rather than broadcasting, work at the bottom of the day's range, and accept that you may be paying for a partial result. Nebraska's own conclusion is the plainest advice on the subject: the ideal solution is to wait for better weather conditions.
