Chinch Bugs: How to Confirm Them and What Kills Them
Chinch bugs: two species, two grass families, and a float test that confirms them in five minutes. Plus the documented resistance nobody prints on the bottle. Guide for Vermont, where the dominant grass is Kentucky Bluegrass.

A patch of lawn yellows, then goes a burnt reddish colour, then dies. It starts in the hottest, sunniest part of the yard — usually along a driveway or a south wall — and over the following days it gets bigger.
That description fits chinch bugs. It also fits drought stress, and NC State says so plainly: winter frost and drought damage are sometimes mistakenly diagnosed as southern chinch bug feeding. Which is why this article is built around a five minute test rather than a photograph.
Two species, two grass families
Almost every article on this pest quietly assumes one of two situations and confuses readers in the other. There are two insects worth knowing about:

NC State is clear that of the four Blissus species that pest turfgrass, only the southern chinch bug is a common turf pest in the Southeast. The northern one is a different animal on a different lawn — and if you have been reading advice about St. Augustine cultivars while standing on Kentucky bluegrass, that is why none of it fit.
The float test
This is the whole diagnosis, and it costs nothing.

UGA specifies the edge of the patch, where live grass meets dying grass. The centre is where the insects have already finished — sampling there undercounts and sends you away thinking you are fine.

Adults are about 3/16 inch, black with white patches on the wings. Young nymphs are reddish-orange with a pale band across the back. Compare against the thresholds above — and note UGA's much lower bar of more than three in the sample.
Now tug the turfBefore you buy anything
If it lifts away like carpet, the roots are gone and you are looking at grubs, not chinch bugs. That single check decides whether you need a surface product or a soil one, and getting it wrong wastes the whole application.
NC State offers a simpler alternative if you have no suitable can: seal a square of turf in a clear plastic bag and leave it in the sun for several minutes. The heat drives the insects out where you can see them.
Chinch bug or drought?
The two look alike because the damage mechanism is similar in effect. Chinch bugs suck fluid from the plant and inject saliva that, as NC State puts it, interferes with water and nutrient movement — so the grass wilts and discolours exactly as if it were short of water. Three things separate them:
- Where it starts. Chinch bug damage begins in the hottest, sunniest, driest part of the lawn — but so does drought. What differs is what happens next: chinch bug patches expand outward over days as the insects move, while drought patches stay where the water does not reach.
- What water does. Soak the area thoroughly. Drought stress improves within a few days. A chinch bug patch does not.
- What the can says. The float test does not care about your interpretation.

There is a third look-alike, and the blades tell you which it is. Chinch bugs feed by sucking, so the grass discolours with its leaves intact. Armyworms and sod webworms chew, so the blades come back notched or shortened — and a lawn thinning from the top down, rather than wilting, is theirs rather than a chinch bug’s.
And a fourth, which is the one NC State names alongside drought: winter frost damage is also mistaken for southern chinch bug feeding. That look-alike is purely a question of the calendar, and the calendar is local.
In Vermont the frost window runs from Early September in the Northeast Kingdom and the higher valleys; early October in the Champlain Valley and along the Connecticut River to Late May in the Kingdom and mountain towns, mid-May in the Champlain Valley — the growing season in Island Pond is weeks shorter than in Burlington — so a patch you are looking at inside those dates, or in the weeks just after, has frost injury on the list of explanations whether or not the lawn ever froze visibly.
Cool-season turf in Vermont tolerates frost without the wholesale discolouration warm-season grass shows, so the frost look-alike is weaker here — and the southern chinch bug is largely a St. Augustine problem anyway, so on Kentucky Bluegrass you are more likely dealing with the hairy chinch bug covered below.
The one test that ignores all four look-alikes is still the float test, because it does not ask you to interpret anything — and if the frost dates above put you in the ambiguous window, that is the argument for doing it rather than guessing.
There is a fifth candidate our own state research puts on the table, and it is specific to where you are: the diseases recorded as high risk in Vermont are Gray and pink snow mould, Red thread, Dollar spot. Every one of those discolours turf without chewing it, which is the same silhouette a chinch bug leaves — so a float test that comes back empty is not a dead end, it is a redirect to that list.
Which chinch bug is yours
In Vermont the dominant lawn grass is Kentucky Bluegrass on a cool-season lawn, which answers the species question before you look at an insect. That puts you in hairy chinch bug country — the less damaging of the two, with a cultural lever the South does not have, and a different threshold published by a different extension service. Chinch bugs are on Vermont's own pest list, recorded there as: “Chinch bugs (dry sandy strips in the valleys)”.The general rule behind that, which holds wherever you are standing:
If your lawn is St. Augustine, centipede, zoysia, bahia or bermuda, it is the southern chinch bug. This is where the pest is most serious: it is the leading listed turf pest in Florida and Texas, and it appears on the coastal St. Augustine lawns of Georgia. Cultivar choice comes up here, and the extension sources genuinely disagree — NC State names ‘Floratam’ and ‘Floralawn’ as resistant alternatives to the susceptible ‘Raleigh’, while UGA lists ‘Floratam’ among susceptible varieties and points to newer lines. Read that as a warning against buying on cultivar reputation: populations differ by region, so trust the float test and your local extension office over a name on a sod invoice.
If your lawn is Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass or bentgrass, it is the hairy chinch bug — the species listed for Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois. The fix here has a lever the South does not: hairy chinch bugs avoid grass containing endophytes, fungi living inside the plant that make it unpalatable. Reseeding thin areas with endophyte-enhanced varieties reduces the population with no chemistry at all — and the species with the clearest published endophyte record is perennial ryegrass, which Penn State credits with increased resistance to chinch bugs, sod webworms, billbugs, fall armyworms and green bugs. On a page where the insecticides are documented as failing, a grass the insect declines to eat is the strongest lever available. Penn State also notes that lightly damaged turf recovers quickly with modest feeding and regular watering, so a borderline count is often best answered by growing the lawn out rather than spraying it.
And in much of the country it is neither. Chinch bugs are not on the commonly listed turf pest list for most states we cover — they are named in twenty-one of fifty. If you are standing on a yellowing patch in one of the other twenty-nine, the odds favour something else, most often white grubs, which the tug test rules out in a single motion. - Gray and pink snow mould — the leading turf disease of the state, because Vermont has the snow cover that makes it one; expect it annually rather than occasionally
- Red thread (cool wet spring on ryegrass and fine fescue, reading as a nitrogen shortage)
- Dollar spot
- Necrotic ring spot on sodded bluegrass
- Brown patch — real in the Champlain Valley and the southern river valleys, uncommon at elevation
Common Pests
- European chafer (suited to a cold state: later in the root zone in autumn, earlier in spring, which moves the window off the usual calendar)
- Japanese beetle
- Voles, working under months of snow and leaving surface runways that appear all at once at melt
- White grubs generally — and in Vermont the product question is settled by law before it is settled by agronomy
- Sod webworm
- Chinch bugs (dry sandy strips in the valleys)
The resistance problem
This is the part the bottle will not tell you, and it changes what a sensible purchase looks like.
UGA reports that southern chinch bug populations have developed resistance to most commonly used insecticides, naming imidacloprid, bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin. Between them those four cover the large majority of consumer lawn insecticide on the shelf — and the two professional concentrates we review are on that list by active ingredient.
Read that with one qualification for Vermont: UGA's resistance findings are for SOUTHERN chinch bug populations, and on a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn you have the hairy chinch bug instead. There is no equivalent published resistance record for the northern species, which means the shelf is more likely to work here than the section below implies — and it also means the endophyte route is available to you, which is the better long-term answer either way. Vermont also has its own rules on lawn chemicals that sit on top of the label — Since July 1, 2025 under Act 182 of 2024, applying neonicotinoid pesticides to turf is prohibited in Vermont, as is applying them to ornamental plants — and Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets is the office that administers them.We are not going to pretend otherwise about our own catalogue:

View on AmazonWhat follows from that is a discipline rather than a product:
- Rotate classes, do not repeat one. UGA’s guidance is explicit that rotating chemical classes and avoiding repeated applications is critical. Pyrethroids, carbamates and organophosphates are the three classes in play.
- Treat the patch and its margin, not the lawn. Blanket applications select for resistance across your whole property and cost more.
- If an application clearly failed, changing brands is not changing classes. Two bottles with different names and the same -thrin ending are the same treatment.
What actually reduces them
Because the chemistry is unreliable, the cultural controls carry more weight on this pest than on most.
Reduce thatch. UGA’s finding is blunt — chinch bug populations increase with the amount of thatch. That makes core aeration a control measure here rather than general good practice, and it is the single recommendation both southern and northern sources share.

Timing that locally rather than generically: the aeration and recovery work belongs in Vermont's Mid-August to early September. Vermont does not have New Hampshire's spare fortnight: seed sown in late September in the Kingdom goes into winter without a root system seeding window, and Fast on the shallow upland till, to the point of drying out in a hot summer drainage on Loamy glacial till over the hills and mountains is part of why thatch accumulates at the rate it does here.Change the grass, on cool-season lawns. - Mow high; the shallow Tunbridge-type upland soils have no deep water for the roots to reach
- Check the soil test date before buying anything with phosphorus in it — the exception in Vermont law runs on an 18-month clock
- Do not buy a neonicotinoid grub product: applying neonicotinoids to turf has been prohibited in Vermont since July 1, 2025
Note how many of those are about water and disease rather than insects. That is the honest local context for a float test: in Vermont the likeliest explanation for a July patch is usually on that list, not in this article. Water properly rather than lightly. Damage shows first in water-stressed areas, so a lawn that is genuinely getting what it needs is a harder target — and Penn State notes lightly damaged turf recovers quickly with modest feeding and regular watering. Sometimes the correct treatment is to grow the lawn out of it.
The honest summary
Chinch bugs are one of the few lawn pests where confirming is easy and treating is hard. A can, some water and five minutes gives you a real number. The tug test separates them from grubs in one motion. And then the awkward part: the actives on most of the shelf have documented resistance in southern populations, so the answer leans on rotation, spot treatment, thatch reduction and — in the North — grass that the insect does not want to eat.
If a bottle promised to end it in one pass, that promise was written before the resistance data.
One caution before you treat: Texas A&M notes a St. Augustine lawn can carry chinch bugs and take-all root rot at the same time, needing both an insecticide and a fungicide. If the roots under the damage are short and blackened, read take-all root rot too.

How do I know if I have chinch bugs?
Float them out. UGA Extension's method is to push a can or a length of 4-inch PVC pipe with both ends cut out up to three inches into the soil at the edge of a damaged patch, fill it with tap water, and keep it topped up — the bugs float to the surface where you can count them. NC State describes a simpler variant: seal a square of turf in a clear plastic bag and leave it in the sun for several minutes. Either way you end up with a number instead of a guess, which is the point.
How many chinch bugs before I treat?
The extension sources give different numbers because they measure differently, and both are worth knowing. NC State puts an approximate treatment threshold at 20–25 chinch bugs per square foot, and Penn State's figure for the northern hairy chinch bug is 15–20 per square foot. UGA works from the float sample instead: treatment is warranted if more than three chinch bugs turn up in the flotation. What all three share is that a handful of insects is not an infestation — populations in a damaged lawn can reach 150 to 200 per square foot.
Is it chinch bugs or drought stress?
This is the most common misdiagnosis in the category, and NC State names it directly — winter frost and drought damage are sometimes mistaken for southern chinch bug feeding. Two things separate them. Chinch bug damage appears first in the hottest, sunniest, most water-stressed parts of the lawn and then expands outward as the insects move, so it spreads over days. Drought damage appears everywhere the water does not reach and improves when you water. If a thorough soaking makes the patch better within a few days, it was water. The float test settles it either way.
Do chinch bugs make the turf lift up like carpet?
No, and that is the fastest way to tell them from grubs. Chinch bugs feed by sucking fluid from stems and crowns at the surface and injecting saliva that interferes with water and nutrient movement, so the roots stay intact and the turf stays anchored. Grubs sever the roots, which is why grub-damaged turf pulls back like a piece of carpet. Same yellowing, opposite diagnosis, and opposite products — a soil insecticide is wasted on chinch bugs and a surface spray is wasted on grubs.
Which grasses do chinch bugs attack?
It depends which chinch bug. The southern chinch bug is primarily a St. Augustine pest, and NC State notes it can also infest centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, bahiagrass and bermudagrass. The northern hairy chinch bug works on cool-season turf instead — Kentucky bluegrass, the fescues, perennial ryegrass and bentgrass. So a chinch bug problem in Florida and a chinch bug problem in Pennsylvania are different insects on different grass, which is why the local answer matters more here than in most pest articles.
Do chinch bug insecticides still work?
Less reliably than the label implies, and this is the single most important thing to know before buying. UGA reports that southern chinch bug populations have developed resistance to most commonly used insecticides, naming imidacloprid, bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin specifically.
