Dark green is a symptom

Most lawn guides are a list of ways to make the grass greener. On this species that instruction is close to backwards, and UGA’s symptom list for centipedegrass decline is where it becomes obvious. Among the signs that a centipede lawn is failing:

Dark green foliage (instead of typical light green)

The colour most people are working toward is on the symptom list. Because centipede is not supposed to be dark green. UGA’s own description of the species:

“Centipedegrass is a ‘Granny Smith’ apple-green, medium-leaf textured turf that can be an attractive lawn or general-purpose area.”

Granny Smith. Pale, slightly yellow-green, deliberately. A centipede lawn that has reached the deep colour of a fed bermuda lawn has usually been fed like one, and UGA is direct about where that leads — excessive nitrogen “can be a primary cause of centipedegrass decline”, and it also promotes thatch buildup and disease problems.

Decline itself is not subtle. UGA describes it as:

“Failure to green-up in the spring or successful green-up followed by decline and death in late spring and summer”

Alongside the colour, the symptom list includes turf easily lifted from the soil by pulling stolons, dull or curled blades in dry weather, and circular patches of dying grass.

So the failure mode of a conscientious owner is the whole subject of this page. Not a pest, not a pathogen you could spray — the maintenance itself.

The hardest rule: no nitrogen before mid-May

NC State’s centipedegrass calendar puts one instruction in capitals:

“DO NOT apply nitrogen (N) before mid-May.”

That is the rule this grass is most often damaged by breaking, and the reason is calendar collision: mid-May is weeks after the month every other lawn in the neighbourhood gets its spring feed, and long after the garden centre has built its display. Feeding a centipede lawn during green-up pushes growth the plant is not yet able to support — which is the front half of UGA’s decline description.

Then the rate. NC State:

“Fertilize with 1 pound of N per 1,000 square feet in mid-May for a basic fertilizer program.”

with a second pound “in mid-August if fertilization beyond a basic program is needed.”

UGA arrives at a similar annual total by a different route:

“One pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year is ample nitrogen for most established centipedegrass lawns”

applied either three or four times annually. And UGA’s species publication gives the range as “1 to 2 lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft, with the lower end of the range typically being sufficient.”

A real disagreement about delivery, and it is worth seeing rather than smoothing over. NC State puts a whole pound down in one May application; UGA splits roughly the same annual total into three or four. They agree on the ceiling and disagree on the schedule. Our reading: the annual total is the number that matters, and if you are going to be approximate about anything, be approximate downward — because the documented failure is excess, and there is no documented failure from underfeeding this species.

Either way, the total is about a pound a year. For scale: bermuda wants several times that, and fine fescue — the low-input cool-season equivalent — wants 1 to 2 pounds. Centipede is at the bottom of the whole category. How much fertilizer do I need converts the rate into product; when to fertilize your lawn is the general calendar, which this species deliberately does not follow.

The mid-May rule against Arkansas's own calendar

Local fertilization window from our state research: Bermuda and zoysia: May through August. Fescue in the north: September and October only NC State's floor for centipede is mid-May regardless — where the local window opens earlier than that, the earlier part of it belongs to other species, not to this one.

No state-level fertilizer timing restriction is recorded for Arkansas, which means the mid-May floor is yours to keep rather than something a regulation will enforce for you.

Local frost dates, which is what mid-May is standing in for: Mid-April (Ozarks) to late March (south) to Late October (Ozarks) to mid-November (southeast Delta) And the spring tasks the feed has to sit behind:

  • Pre-emergent early March in the south, early April in the Ozarks
  • Send a soil sample in — it costs an Arkansan nothing, which removes the usual excuse
  • Wait for full green-up before feeding bermuda

The lime trap

This is the error loop that costs people their lawns, and it is entirely avoidable once you have seen the mechanism.

NC State:

“Note that lime is rarely needed for centipedegrass. DO NOT lime unless a soil test recommends lime.”

UGA supplies the reason:

“An acid soil pH of 5.0 to 6.0 is preferred by this turfgrass species.”

and above 6.0, iron availability decreases — which makes the grass yellow.

Now watch the loop. The lawn yellows. Yellow reads as hungry or sour, so the owner limes it, or feeds it, or both. Lime raises pH. Higher pH means less available iron. The lawn yellows more. Every corrective step makes the next symptom worse, and none of it looks like a mistake from inside.

The way out is a soil test, not a product. Centipede is one of the few lawns where the right answer to a visible problem is often to add nothing at all.

The specific risk in Arkansas is therefore inherited advice: acid soil is exactly the condition that makes routine liming standard practice for other lawns here, and applying that habit to centipede is how a lawn that was already in the right range gets pushed out of it.

The decline window, and what you will be tempted to spray in it

UGA's decline runs through "late spring and summer", so the local summer programme is the one it overlaps. Arkansas's own summer tasks:

  • Feed bermuda and zoysia monthly through August
  • Large patch and brown patch both run in this humidity — rotate fungicide classes rather than repeating one
  • Stop spraying broadleaf products in peak heat; the label limits exist for a reason here

The weeds recorded as high risk here are Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Nutsedge, Henbit — which matters on this species more than on the others, because centipede is sensitive to 2,4-D, the active in most broadleaf lawn herbicides. Yellow means iron, not food

Because the yellowing is an iron-availability problem rather than a nitrogen shortage, the correct response is iron. NC State:

“Spray iron (ferrous) sulfate (2 ounces in 5 gallons of water per 1,000 square feet) or a chelated iron source to enhance color as needed.”

Iron greens the grass without pushing growth, which is the entire point on a species whose documented failure is excess growth from excess nitrogen. Nitrogen would also green it up — and would move it toward decline while doing so.

Mowing and the half-inch thatch threshold

The two sources bracket the height slightly differently. UGA:

“The recommended mowing height for centipedegrass is 1.0 to 1.5 in.”

NC State:

“Mow grass to 1 to 2 inches tall. Do not let grass get taller than 2½ inches.”

Take 1 to 1.5 inches as the working range and 2½ inches as a hard ceiling. This is a genuinely low-mown grass, which is unusual for something marketed on low maintenance — but it grows slowly enough that low mowing does not mean frequent mowing. UGA: it “spreads only by stolons and has a slow to moderate growth rate.” Lawn mowing height has every species side by side.

Thatch comes with a threshold rather than a schedule. NC State:

“Power rake (vertical mow) to remove thatch (the layer of undecomposed grass) in late May if it is thicker than ½ inch.”

What it will not take

NC State’s exclusion list is the definition of where this grass does not belong:

“It does not tolerate traffic, compaction, high-phosphorus soils, low-potassium soils, high pH, excessive thatch, drought, or heavy shade.”

Two of those deserve pulling out.

Traffic and compaction. A grass that spreads only by slow stolons has no fast route back from wear, so a play area, a dog run or a shortcut across a corner is the wrong site. Best grass seed for high traffic covers what to use instead.

Drought. This is the one that surprises people who bought centipede as the undemanding option. NC State: “Actively growing centipedegrass requires about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or supplemental irrigation.” Low input does not mean low water. On shade there is a usable number rather than a flat no. UGA:

“Centipedegrass performs best in full sun but can maintain acceptable quality and color with as little as 6 hr of filtered to intermittent sunlight per day during the growing season.”

Six hours of filtered light is still a bright site. For genuine shade, St. Augustine is the warm-season answer and growing grass in shade has the light floor.

Establishing it

Centipede is one of the warm-season grasses you can start from seed rather than sod, which is most of its cost advantage — though the seed is slow, in keeping with everything else about the species.

Centipede is the minimum-input end of that table, and the trade is recovery. Bermuda and zoysia carry rhizomes as well as stolons and repair themselves quickly; centipede has stolons only and is slow. So the honest position is that centipede suits a lawn you want to look at and largely leave alone — and that “leave alone” is a genuine instruction here rather than a marketing line. The honest summary

Centipede grass asks for less than any other lawn grass in the American South — roughly a pound of nitrogen a year, an inch of mowing, and no lime. What it will not survive is being looked after like a normal lawn.

Three rules carry almost all of it. No nitrogen before mid-May, which is NC State’s only capitalised instruction. About a pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet a year, because UGA names excess as a primary cause of decline. And do not lime unless a soil test tells you to, because the preferred pH is 5.0 to 6.0 and going above 6.0 costs you the iron that keeps the grass green.
