Fluazifop vs Clethodim: Same Group, Different Labels

Both kill grass and spare broadleaves, and both are Group 1 — so swapping them is not rotation. What separates them is which sites their labels allow.

Two bottles, two different active ingredients, and both promise the same unlikely trick: kill the grass, leave everything else standing.

They deliver it. What almost nobody explains is that they deliver it the same way — and that the real difference between them is not performance at all. It is which piece of ground the label lets you stand on.

Why They Kill Grass and Nothing Else

Most selective turf chemistry is a balance of rate and timing — the weed dies a little faster than the grass is hurt. This family is not like that. The selectivity is structural.

Nebraska Extension’s herbicide lesson gives the mechanism in one sentence:

“Dicots are naturally tolerant to ACCase inhibitors because their ACCase enzymes do not bind the herbicides.”

The broadleaf plant’s enzyme is the wrong shape. The herbicide arrives and nothing happens. That is why the same lesson calls this family “graminicides, or sometimes ‘grass killers’”, and why they are the only practical answer for a grass growing inside a flower bed, a clover food plot, or a bed of ornamentals.

The target itself is “ACCase, the first enzyme of fatty acid synthesis” — the plant loses its ability to build membrane lipids. Which explains the speed, or the lack of it: nothing is being burned, so nothing browns overnight.

The Rotation That Is Not a Rotation

Here is the part worth the price of the article.

Nebraska describes two chemical families that both hit that enzyme: “two herbicide families with very different chemical structures, the aryloxyphenoxy propionates and the cyclohexanediones, inhibit ACCase.” The first are informally called fops, after the suffix on their names — fluazifop. The second are dims — clethodim, sethoxydim.

Different structures. Different names. Same enzyme, and on Purdue’s herbicide classification chart, the same number: Group 1.

So the shed that holds a fluazifop bottle and a clethodim bottle is not a shed with two modes of action in it. If a patch of grass has survived repeated applications of one, the other is the least imaginative next step available — and cross-resistance between fops and dims, while not universal, is common enough that it working would be luck rather than plan.

The Label Is the Real Difference

This is where the three separate, and it is not subtle. We read all of these labels rather than the retail descriptions — how to read a pesticide label shows where a site list lives on the fine print, and it is the section to check before any of the three goes in your cart.

Fluazifop is the only one of the three with turf on the label, which is why it is the active behind published programmes for suppressing bermudagrass in tall fescue. The caution is printed and worth reading twice — one label states “do not apply to tall fescue turf unless injury can be tolerated.” Tolerated, not avoided. Killing bermuda grass in fescue covers what that programme actually looks like.

Sethoxydim sits one step out: the label we read covers ornamental and landscape sites, not turf. For a grass coming up through a bed it is a direct alternative to fluazifop; for a lawn it is off-label.

Clethodim is not a lawn or landscape product at all. The sites on both labels we read are broadleaf crops — alfalfa, sweet and red clover, mustard, canola, soybeans, flax. That is why it reaches homeowners almost entirely through food-plot brands. Used on turf it would do exactly what the chemistry promises and remove the turf.

And two of them carry state restrictions

Neither appears in any product description; both are printed on labels we opened.

  • One fluazifop product marks its bermudagrass sections “not applicable in California” — which is the use most buyers want it for.
  • One clethodim product limits application on Long Island, New York to no more than 16 fl oz per acre, and a second carries endangered-species prohibitions in a mapped part of Solano County, California and in Hays County, Texas.

The Ornamentals They Are Not Safe On

“Safe over the top of broadleaf plants” is the selling point of this whole chemistry, and NC State names the exceptions — which matter more than the rule, because the exceptions are common landscape plants.

Fluazifop “can be safely applied over the top of most broadleaf plants but has injured certain cultivars of prostrate junipers and azaleas.” Fenoxaprop, from the same family, “has been shown to injure certain cultivars of prostrate junipers and some azaleas.” Note cultivars in both: this is not “junipers are sensitive”, it is “some junipers are and you cannot tell by looking.”

And a finding that changes how you mix, not just what you buy. On clethodim specifically: “Clethodim (Envoy) is labeled for a wide range of woody and herbaceous ornamentals but the addition of some surfactants to the spray has caused increased injury to tender herbaceous plants.” So the adjuvant that improves grass control on a waxy weed can be the thing that damages the bedding plants you were spraying around — the herbicide was labelled for them, the tank mix was not.

NC State’s instruction follows from both, and it is the cheapest insurance on this page: “read the label carefully to determine which herbicide is labeled for your ornamental plants. And, test the safety of herbicides and surfactants before wide-scale use.” Spray one plant at the edge of the bed and wait a week before doing the whole bed.

Which One to Buy

Fluazifop if the grass is in a lawn or an ornamental bed — it is the only one of the three whose label covers turf, and the fescue caution tells you how carefully.

And whichever you buy: give it weeks. One fluazifop label we read describes complete bermudagrass control as a one-to-two-growing-season job. Nothing about stopping fatty acid synthesis produces a dead plant by Friday, and the most common way to waste one of these applications is to conclude at day three that it failed and spray something non-selective over the top.

The Honest Summary

  1. Where is the grass growing? Lawn or ornamental bed → fluazifop. Bed only → sethoxydim also works. Clover, alfalfa or brassica plot → clethodim.
  2. Has one of them already failed here? Do not reach for another Group 1. They share the enzyme, and the second bottle is likely to disappoint in the same way.
  3. How long has it been? If the answer is days, it is too early to judge.

Are fluazifop and clethodim interchangeable?

Chemically they are closer than their marketing suggests and legally they are not interchangeable at all. Buying a fop and a dim feels like owning two tools and, from the weed's point of view, is closer to owning one. If a grass has survived repeated applications of either, the sensible next move is a different group entirely rather than the other bottle on the same shelf. Cross-resistance between fops and dims is common though not universal, so the other one occasionally still works — that is luck rather than a strategy.

Why do these kill grass but not broadleaf plants?

Because the broadleaf plant's version of the target enzyme simply does not accept the herbicide. Nebraska states it directly: dicots are naturally tolerant to ACCase inhibitors because their ACCase enzymes do not bind the herbicides. That is a cleaner form of selectivity than most turf chemistry, where safety depends on rate and timing. It is also why these are collectively known as graminicides, or sometimes grass killers — and why they are the only practical answer for a grass growing inside a flower bed or a clover plot.

Fluazifop, and only with care about the species. How fast should I expect results?

Slower than a non-selective, and on an established perennial grass considerably slower. These herbicides stop fatty acid synthesis rather than burning tissue, so the plant runs down instead of collapsing — the newest growth yellows first and the stand thins over weeks. One fluazifop label we read describes complete bermudagrass control as taking one to two growing seasons. Judging them at day three and reaching for something stronger is the most common way people waste the application they already made.
