Why Didn't My Weed Killer Work? Six Causes, One Is the Product

Purdue: hard water can inactivate glyphosate, and more water in the tank can make it worse. Start from what you saw, not from which brand you bought.

Almost nobody arrives at this question with a product problem. They arrive having spent an afternoon, a tank and thirty dollars, and the weeds are still there.

So start from what you saw, not from which bottle you bought. The symptom narrows the cause fast, and only one of the six common causes is the product being weak.

Work down that list before buying a second product, because five of the six causes are free to fix and none of them are solved by a stronger bottle.

Nothing Happened At All

The herbicide never got inside the plant. Three routes to that, in order of how often they explain it.

1. Water removed it. Purdue’s mechanism is blunt: “rain after an application can wash glyphosate off before it has a chance to enter the leaf.” The window varies enormously — Purdue puts the rain-free requirement anywhere from 30 minutes on a small susceptible weed to several hours on a large one, while Iowa State gives selective lawn products a conservative “no rain is forecast for 24 hours” and the same 24 hours for irrigation. 2. It never landed. Coverage failures are invisible by definition — you cannot see the strip you missed or the leaf the spray beaded off.

3. The active was wrong for that weed. Which is not a failure of application at all, and the survivors tell you so — see below.

It Browned Then Came Back

The most common outcome and the most misread one. The herbicide reached the leaf and not the root, and on a perennial the root is the entire product.

Four causes, and the first is the one we see most:

The adjuvant was wrong. NDSU describes the grass-selective class — clethodim, sethoxydim, fluazifop, quizalofop — as controlling grasses “applied POST with oil adjuvant”. The oil is inside the description. Reach for the plain non-ionic surfactant you already own and you get exactly this result: damaged leaf, live root. Surfactant or crop oil has the compositions and the label rule — and fluazifop vs clethodim covers which member of that class is even labelled for the ground you are spraying.

You mowed too soon. Iowa State: allow “3 to 4 days to pass before mowing” after treatment, because that time “allows sufficient time for the broadleaf weeds to absorb the herbicide and translocate it to their roots.” Cut the leaves off mid-journey and the product is stranded above the root. And the half nobody asks about: “don’t mow the lawn 2 to 3 days before treatment” either, because a freshly mown weed has almost no leaf to spray. Antagonism. If you mixed a broadleaf product with a grass product, NDSU’s finding applies: “Most broadleaf herbicides tank mixed with POST grass herbicides will often reduce grass control compared to the grass herbicide applied alone.” The tell is specific — broadleaf weeds died, grasses survived. Mixing herbicides in one tank has the sequence that avoids it.

Or it is simply a perennial. For some species one pass was never going to be enough, and the sources say so on the label rather than in the reviews: a fluazifop label states complete control may take 1 to 2 growing seasons; Alabama Extension says a single annual treatment on kudzu is not sufficient; Virginia Tech says bermudagrass control at 100% in a season is highly unlikely. Regrowth there is the plan, not the failure — poison ivy, kudzu, bermuda in fescue.

Some Weeds Died And Others Ignored It

The survivors are the diagnosis. Look at what lived rather than at what died.

This is a buying error rather than an application error, which makes it the cheapest one to fix and the easiest to repeat. Lawn weed identification is the page to start from, and best weed killer for lawns maps weed groups to actives.

The Lawn Got Damaged As Well

Two causes, and both are avoidable without spending anything.

Heat. Clemson’s account of what high temperature does to your grass rather than to the weed:

“Your desired grass is also experiencing the heat stress, so adding products that the plant still must break down increases the workload and can lead to decline, even if the grass is normally tolerant of the herbicide; this is especially true for cool season grasses like tall fescue.”

Selectivity is a metabolic race, not a wall — the turf survives because it breaks the herbicide down faster than the weed does, and heat slows the side you were counting on. Clemson’s threshold is 90°F; Nebraska’s optimum band is 60–75°F. Both ends in spraying weed killer in hot weather.

Your grass was not on the label. This is the one that reads as a product defect and is not:

  • One professional warm-season product in our catalogue must not be used on cool-season turf at all — tall fescue, fine fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass or creeping bentgrass.
  • A common consumer triclopyr excludes bahiagrass, bermudagrass, centipedegrass, kikuyugrass and St. Augustinegrass.
  • A turf-labelled triclopyr ester lists only perennial bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, and says injury must be tolerable on anything else.

It Worked, And Then They Returned

Three different situations, three different answers, and only one of them is about the spray.

1. New weeds germinated. Nothing in the post-emergent category prevents germination. NC State, on the whole contact category: “none of these products have residual activity… in soils” — meaning no pre-emergence control. A lawn cleaned in May being weedy in July is the seedbank doing what it does, and that is a pre-emergent question.

2. The same plant regrew. A partial dose reached the root. Repeat, at the label’s interval, and read the four causes in the browning section first so the repeat is not a repeat of the same mistake.

3. The weed was a symptom. Moss returns because the shade, compaction or drainage is unchanged; killing it treats the visible half. Moss in lawn is the clearest case of this on the site.

The Two Causes Nobody Suspects

Your water may be inactivating it

“These dissolved salts in hard water may reduce glyphosate’s effectiveness, particularly calcium and magnesium salts. These salts have a positive charge and may associate with the negatively charged glyphosate molecule, displacing the isopropylamine or other salt used in the formulated product. Plants absorb less glyphosate bound with calcium or magnesium salts than the formulated salt of glyphosate, thus reducing glyphosate activity.”

The herbicide is chemically altered in your tank before it reaches the plant. Hard well water is common across much of the country, and Purdue notes most glyphosate products recommend adding ammonium sulfate under those conditions. They also flag a shortcut that underperforms: convenience products sold to counter hard water “may be more convenient to use than AMS”, but “studies show many of them are less effective.”

More water in the tank can make it worse

Counterintuitive, and documented:

“Research has documented that glyphosate applied in water volumes less than 10 gallons per acre often performs better than when it is applied in water volumes of 20 or more gallons per acre.”

Two mechanisms, and the first connects straight back to the section above: “as spray gallonage increases, the ratio of antagonistic salts to glyphosate increases.” The second is “a simple dilution effect” — more water means a lower concentration of both the active ingredient and the surfactant.

This is an argument against over-diluting rather than for spraying as little water as possible. Purdue also notes higher volumes may improve control where weed density is high or a canopy is full. The practical version: mix to the label’s carrier volume rather than filling the tank because it is easier. One related note on adjuvants, since it comes up here: Purdue found “little benefit to adding extra surfactant to ‘fully loaded’ formulations that do not specify the need for additional surfactant.” If the label already includes it, more is not better.

The Five Free Checks

In order, because each one eliminates a cause without spending anything:

  1. Did it rain or irrigate within 24 hours? Turn the controller off before the next application.
  2. Did you mow within 3–4 days either side? Both sides matter.
  3. Was it above 90°F or below 60°F? Wait for the band.
  4. Did the label ask for an oil adjuvant? Check before assuming your surfactant qualifies.
  5. Is the survivor a different plant type from what died? Then it is a buying question.

If all five come back clean and the survivors are the same species that died elsewhere in the lawn, coverage is what is left — and that is the one place where a small purchase genuinely helps, because a spray indicator dye makes the miss visible while you can still fix it.

The Short Version

Diagnose from the symptom, not from the brand.

Browned-then-regrew is the commonest result and almost always means the root was never reached: wrong adjuvant, mowed too soon, antagonism, or a perennial that needs repeats.

The survivors tell you what the product does not cover. That is a buying error, and the cheapest one to fix.

Heat damages your lawn as well as reducing control, and your grass species has to be on the label.

And check your water. Hard water can inactivate glyphosate, and a fuller tank can make it worse — two causes that never appear on the bottle.

Why didn't my weed killer work?

Can my water make weed killer stop working?

Yes, and it is the cause almost nobody suspects. For glyphosate it often makes it worse, which is the opposite of most people's instinct. Purdue: research has documented that glyphosate applied in water volumes less than 10 gallons per acre often performs better than when it is applied in water volumes of 20 or more gallons per acre. They give two reasons. As spray volume increases, the ratio of antagonistic salts to glyphosate increases, so the potential for calcium or magnesium to inactivate it rises. And there is a simple dilution effect — as volume goes up, the ratio of formulated product to water falls, reducing the concentration of both the active ingredient and the surfactant in the solution. That said, they also note higher volumes may improve control in dense weed stands or full canopies, so this is about not over-diluting rather than about spraying as little water as possible.

Why did the weeds brown and then come back?

Because the herbicide reached the leaf but not the root, and there are four common reasons. The adjuvant may have been wrong — the grass-selective herbicides need an oil rather than a plain surfactant, and substituting produces exactly this result. You may have mown too soon: Iowa State's instruction is to allow three to four days before mowing so the weeds can absorb the herbicide and translocate it to their roots, and cutting the leaves off strands it above them. A tank mix may have caused antagonism, which reduces grass control while leaving the broadleaf result intact. Or the plant is a woody perennial with reserves you did not reach on one pass — which is normal for poison ivy, kudzu and bermudagrass rather than a failure.

Why did it kill some weeds and not others?

Because no single active covers everything, and the gap is usually predictable once you know which. A three-way broadleaf product does nothing to grasses or sedges. A grass-selective product does nothing to broadleaf weeds — that is its whole point. Iron-based products are burndown only, so perennials regrow from roots the product never reached. And some pairings are specifically weak: UGA Extension records that 2,4-D is only marginally effective in controlling poison ivy, which means the standard lawn bottle is the wrong tool for it even though poison ivy is a broadleaf. Identify the survivors before buying anything else, because the survivors tell you what the gap was.

Why did my lawn get damaged as well as the weeds?

Two likely causes, and both are avoidable. The first is heat. Clemson Extension notes that when herbicides are applied above 90°F your desired grass is also experiencing the heat stress, so adding products the plant must break down increases the workload and can lead to decline even if the grass is normally tolerant of the herbicide — and they name cool-season grasses like tall fescue as especially at risk. It worked, and the weeds came back a month later. Was it a failure?

Usually not, and the distinction matters because the fix is different. Nothing in the post-emergent category prevents germination — no soil residual means the seedbank comes up on schedule regardless of how well the spray worked, which is why a clean lawn in May can be weedy again in July. That is a pre-emergent question rather than a post-emergent one. The other version is a perennial regrowing from a root that received a partial dose, which is a repeat-application question. And the third is a weed that was a symptom rather than a cause: moss returns because the shade, compaction or drainage that let it in is unchanged, and killing it treats the visible half of the problem.

How do I tell which of these it was?

Work backwards through five questions in order, because they eliminate causes quickly. Did it rain or irrigate within a day? Did you mow within three or four days either side? Was it above 90°F or below 60°F? Does the label ask for an oil adjuvant rather than the surfactant you used? Is the survivor a different plant type from the ones that died? Four of those five are free to check and none of them require buying anything. If all five come back clean and the survivors are the same species that died elsewhere in the lawn, then coverage is the remaining candidate — and a spray pattern indicator dye on the next pass turns that from a theory into something you can see.
