How to Kill Bermuda Grass in a Fescue Lawn: Mow It Out First
Virginia Tech: tall fescue can completely kill bermudagrass at a 4-inch mowing height with no herbicide. Mow lower and no product will save you.

Every article on this problem starts with which herbicide to buy. The Virginia Tech turfgrass weed specialists start somewhere else, and their sentence is worth more than any product recommendation on this page:
“Research has shown that tall fescue can completely kill bermudagrass at a mowing height of 4 inches without use of herbicides.”
Completely kill. No herbicide. Four inches.
And the corollary, from the same publication, is the reason most spray programmes fail:
“Cool-season turfgrass managed at the lower end of recommended mowing heights or less will reduce the effectiveness of herbicide controls for bermudagrass to such an extent that control is nearly impossible.”
Four Inches Does What A Bottle Cannot
Bermudagrass is hard to beat on almost every axis, and Virginia Tech lists them: it “survives most environments with less water, less nutrient, less fungicide, and less topsoil.”
Then the opening:
“About the only thing the grass can’t tolerate is less light.”
A tall fescue canopy held at four inches is less light. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why mowing height is not a supporting detail here but the primary control.
They are also honest about what it looks like: “It is a bit shaggy and mowers tend to leave tire tracks for a day or so.” It grows faster at that height and needs cutting more often. Their summary target is 3.5 to 4.0 inches, with autumn fertility named as the other most important cultural factor.
The reason this belongs at the top rather than in a “cultural control” section you skip:

If you are unwilling to mow at four inches, the honest advice is not a different product. It is either to accept the bermudagrass or to go to the renovation option below.

There Is No Selective Bermuda Killer
This is the sentence that reframes every product search you have already done:
“There are only a few herbicides that will harm bermudagrass more than tall fescue… And by the way, that is about as good as it gets. You can ‘harm bermudagrass more than you harm fescue’.”
Differential injury, not selectivity. Compare that with how a genuine selective works: a three-way broadleaf herbicide leaves grass untouched because grasses lack the target the chemistry attacks. Nothing here works that way. Bermudagrass and tall fescue are both grasses, and every product that hurts one hurts the other — you are exploiting a margin, not a difference in kind.
Which is why Virginia Tech describes the goal as “repeated treatments that continue to suppress bermudagrass while allowing the cool-season lawn to expand without causing excessive injury.”
Two consequences follow, and both are about expectations:
- Your fescue will look worse before it looks better. Some injury is part of the programme.
- Eradication is not on the menu. “No matter how good control is achieved in a season, it is highly unlikely that bermudagrass control is 100% and there likely will be follow up control programs in the future.”
That is the same shape as poison ivy and kudzu — a perennial with reserves underground, where the first pass is the start of a programme rather than the treatment.
Autumn Beats Spring And By A Lot
Both publications agree, and they agree on the mechanism as well as the timing.
Virginia Tech: “bermudagrass control programs that are initiated in late summer/early fall are far superior to spring/mid-summer treatment programs.” Their reason is that autumn treatment “weakens the bermudagrass prior to its most challenging environment of the year to persist (winter)”, after which winterkill finishes part of the job for free.
UGA reaches the same place on the non-selective route: “Fall glyphosate applications generally control bermudagrass more effectively than summer treatments.”
And the instruction for anyone who will not commit to a full season:
“If you are only willing to apply a few times, make sure they are in the fall rather than spring or early summer.”
That is a genuinely useful piece of triage. Two well-timed autumn passes beat five badly-timed spring ones, and the money goes further.
The Programme And What We Stock For It
Virginia Tech lists five options. Rather than reproduce all of them, here is the structure — because every selective option is a grass herbicide plus triclopyr, and the triclopyr is the part we can supply with label support.

View on AmazonBe precise about that second one. Tenacity’s label does not carry a bermudagrass-suppression-in-fescue use section. What it carries is a use precaution: bermudagrass, along with bentgrass, Poa annua, kikuyugrass, zoysiagrass and seashore paspalum, “are sensitive to Tenacity applications. Avoid spraying these turf types unless control and/or injury can be tolerated.” That clause is the basis the extension programme rests on, and it is not the same thing as a labelled use — so we say which it is. Its label does reference Turflon Ester (triclopyr, EPA Reg. No. 62719-258) by number, so the pairing itself is not invented.
A cheaper form of the same active exists and we do not recommend it here. The generic mesotrione we review is a 40% agricultural concentrate whose label carries no cool-season-turf bermudagrass section at all — its only bermudagrass entry is for winter weeds in dormant bermuda, the opposite situation. Same chemistry, different approved use. That distinction is the whole subject of how to read a pesticide label.
One product to keep off the lawn entirely. We also review a sethoxydim bottle, which controls bermudagrass and is the right chemistry for bermudagrass coming up through ornamental beds. It is not a turf product — sethoxydim kills grass, so on a fescue lawn it is the opposite of selective.
If the contamination is severe
Virginia Tech’s first option is to stop fighting and start over, and it is the right call when bermudagrass is through most of the lawn.

The renovation route

The irrigation between passes is the part people skip, and it is deliberate: you want the bermudagrass growing again so the second application has live tissue to enter. Confirming a complete kill before committing seed is covered in how to kill a lawn before reseeding.
And do not treat a second grass killer as a fallback. Fluazifop, clethodim and sethoxydim are all ACCase inhibitors in Group 1, so if the programme stalls, the other bottle on the shelf is the same mode of action wearing a different name — fluazifop vs clethodim sets out which of the three each site actually permits, and why swapping them is not a rotation.
Two Restrictions Worth Reading Twice
Seeding intervals belong to the triclopyr. Virginia Tech: “Turflon requires a 3-week post-treatment delay before tall fescue can be seeded.” Their workaround is to leave the triclopyr out of the final autumn treatment so you can seed sooner. Fenoxaprop and fluazifop carry their own seeding restrictions.
And the seeding is not optional: “fall seeding to fill voids left by dying bermudagrass is also important” — kill bermudagrass, leave bare soil, and you have prepared a seedbed for whatever arrives next. When to overseed covers the window.
A temperature ceiling neither of the other two states in this programme. Clemson adds the limit that stops a monthly programme from becoming a fescue-injury programme: “stop treatments when temperatures consistently reach 90 °F and do not apply to drought-stressed fescue.” That is the constraint that makes autumn the stronger half of the year here — you are spraying a grass-active herbicide onto a cool-season lawn, and July gives you a bermudagrass in full growth and a fescue already at its limit. Their timing for the spring half is “as soon as the bermudagrass turns green in the spring and repeated monthly”, which means the spring window closes when the heat arrives rather than when the bermudagrass stops.
Clemson is also careful with the verb, and it is worth copying: “there are few herbicides that will suppress bermudagrass without harming fescue.” Suppress. Not control, not eliminate.
One cheap addition they specify. “The addition of a nonionic surfactant at 2 teaspoons per gallon of water will improve control.” On a waxy, prostrate, stoloniferous grass that is the difference between spray sitting on the leaf and spray rolling off it — surfactant vs crop oil covers which to reach for.
Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue are not tall fescue. The differences are specific rather than general:
“For example, Ornamec is not labeled for Kentucky bluegrass; the Turflon Ester rate will be cut in half for either fine fescue or Kentucky bluegrass.”
A programme copied from a tall fescue article and applied at tall fescue rates to a bluegrass lawn is how people damage the grass they were trying to save. Virginia Tech’s own parenthetical is the right note to end on: “(and remember, the label IS THE LAW!)”
And check you are fighting the right grass, because the answer changes completely with its life cycle. Bermudagrass is a perennial that regrows from stolons and rhizomes every year, which is why this page describes a multi-season programme and no pre-emergent appears in it. The annual grassy weeds are the opposite case: crabgrass and annual bluegrass germinate from seed each season, so a barrier put down before germination does most of the work. Dallisgrass is the one people get wrong in both directions — it looks like crabgrass and behaves like bermudagrass. And nutsedge is not a grass at all, which is why nothing on this page touches it.
The Short Version
Raise the mower to 3.5–4 inches before you buy anything. It may finish the job alone, and below three inches nothing else will work.
Stop looking for a selective product. There is none. You are buying differential injury and running a programme — a turf triclopyr plus a grass herbicide, both of which we now review, with the label status of each stated on its page.
Put the treatments in late summer and autumn, and if you will only do a few, do those.
Expect four to five passes in a season and more next year. One hundred percent is not on offer.
Seed the voids in autumn, after your label’s interval — and read that interval on your own bottle, because the grasses in your lawn decide the rate.

Can you kill bermuda grass in a fescue lawn without herbicide?
Sometimes, and this is the most under-reported fact in the whole subject. Virginia Tech's turfgrass weed specialists state it directly: research has shown that tall fescue can completely kill bermudagrass at a mowing height of 4 inches without use of herbicides. The mechanism is light. Bermudagrass tolerates less water, less fertiliser, less fungicide and less topsoil than your fescue does — the one thing it cannot tolerate is shade, and a fescue canopy held at four inches is shade. They are candid about what four inches looks like: a bit shaggy, with mower tracks that last a day. It also grows faster and needs cutting more often. That is the whole cost, and it is the cheapest bermudagrass programme available.
Does mowing height matter if I am spraying anyway?
It decides whether the spraying works, which is why it comes first on this page rather than last. Virginia Tech: cool-season turfgrass managed at the lower end of recommended mowing heights or less will reduce the effectiveness of herbicide controls for bermudagrass to such an extent that control is nearly impossible. Read that as a precondition rather than a tip. If you are cutting tall fescue at two and a half inches, no product in this article will give you a result worth the money, because you are removing the competitive advantage the herbicide is supposed to exploit. Is there a herbicide that kills bermuda grass but not fescue?
Not in the sense people mean, and Virginia Tech is unusually honest about it: there are only a few herbicides that will harm bermudagrass more than tall fescue, and by the way, that is about as good as it gets. You can harm bermudagrass more than you harm fescue. So the goal is not selectivity but differential injury — repeated treatments that suppress the bermudagrass while letting the cool-season lawn expand into the space without excessive injury of its own. That framing changes what success looks like. You are not buying a product that removes a weed; you are running a programme that shifts a competition, and the programme is the thing that works rather than any single bottle in it.
When should I spray — spring or autumn?
Autumn, and both sources say so for the same reason. Virginia Tech: bermudagrass control programs that are initiated in late summer/early fall are far superior to spring/mid-summer treatment programs, because the timing weakens the bermudagrass before winter, the hardest season for it to survive, and winterkill then finishes some of what the herbicide started. UGA's guidance on the non-selective option agrees: fall glyphosate applications generally control bermudagrass more effectively than summer treatments. Virginia Tech's practical instruction for anyone unwilling to run a full season programme is the most useful sentence for a homeowner: if you are only willing to apply a few times, make sure they are in the fall rather than spring or early summer.
How many applications does it take?
Three to five within a season, repeated in following years. The triclopyr programme on a label in our catalogue reads three to four additional applications at 4 week intervals to give adequate suppression of bermudagrass and allow fescue or other desired turfgrass species to dominate — so four to five passes in total. UGA schedules fenoxaprop or fluazifop in tall fescue from around June 1 and repeated every 20 to 30 days, and notes repeat applications of selective herbicides are needed for best results. And Virginia Tech closes the door on the one-season hope: no matter how good control is achieved in a season, it is highly unlikely that bermudagrass control is 100% and there likely will be follow up control programs in the future.
What actives are actually used, and do you sell them?
Four appear across the two publications for cool-season turf, and we now review three of them — with the label status of each stated rather than blurred. Triclopyr is the common tank-mix partner in every Virginia Tech programme, and the turf-labelled triclopyr ester we review carries bermudagrass suppression in fescue on its own label at 3/4 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet, with an instruction to tank mix it with a postemergence grass herbicide registered for that use pattern. Fluazifop is that partner, and the 1.7% product we review has a dedicated Bermudagrass Control in Tall Fescue section — 2 fluid ounces per gallon per 1,000 square feet, spring and autumn, repeated at 14 to 21 day intervals, with its own statement that complete control may take 1 to 2 growing seasons. Mesotrione is the third: we review the original Tenacity, but be precise about its label, which frames bermudagrass as a species sensitive to the product rather than carrying a suppression use section. Topramezone we do not review. Fenoxaprop we do not review either, and UGA names it alongside fluazifop for tall fescue and zoysia.
Can I do this in a Kentucky bluegrass or fine fescue lawn?
More carefully, and the label differences are not small. Virginia Tech: when attempting selective bermudagrass control in Kentucky bluegrass or fine fescue, be sure to follow the label very carefully because there are differential tolerances of these grasses to the herbicides as compared to tall fescue. Their examples are specific — fluazifop is not labelled for Kentucky bluegrass at all, and the triclopyr rate is cut in half for either fine fescue or Kentucky bluegrass. So a programme written for tall fescue can injure a bluegrass lawn at the same rates. Check your own label for your own species, and note their parenthetical, which is the point of our whole label guide: the label IS THE LAW.
Should I just kill everything and start over?
It is a legitimate option and Virginia Tech lists it first, for severe contamination. Their non-selective route: spray the bermudagrass patches with glyphosate at 5 quarts of product per acre in late June or early July, keep the site irrigated to promote regrowth, treat again three to four weeks later, then seed or sod one week after the second treatment — typically around Labor Day in the transition zone. Two details make it work. The irrigation between passes is deliberate: you want the bermudagrass actively regrowing so the second application reaches what survived the first. And the seeding date is late summer for a reason, which is the same reason autumn beats spring for the selective programmes.
Do I have to wait before seeding fescue afterwards?
Yes, and the interval belongs to the triclopyr rather than to the grass herbicide. Virginia Tech: Turflon requires a 3-week post-treatment delay before tall fescue can be seeded, and they suggest it may be necessary to exclude Turflon from the final fall treatment to allow for more immediate seeding. They add that fenoxaprop and fluazifop also have seeding restrictions, so consult the label. This matters because the seeding is not optional — fall seeding to fill voids left by dying bermudagrass is part of the programme, not a follow-up. Kill bermudagrass and leave bare ground and you have made room for whatever arrives next.
