Walk into the lawn aisle and there are forty bottles. Read the fronts and they all say roughly the same thing. Read the backs and there are about six chemistries, and that is the only list that matters.

The question is never “what is the best weed killer.” It is “what weed am I looking at,” because the answer changes the aisle entirely — and one of those forty bottles will kill your lawn.

If you have already sprayed and it did not work, the product is rarely the reason — five of the six common causes cost nothing to fix. Start at why didn’t my weed killer work before buying a second bottle.

The One Word That Matters Most

Selective. If the label does not say it, put the bottle down.

  • A selective herbicide kills certain plants and leaves others standing. Every lawn weed killer is selective — it has to be, because your lawn is a plant too.
  • A non-selective herbicide kills everything green it contacts. Glyphosate is the familiar one.

Non-selective products have real uses: driveways, gravel, fence lines, cracks in paving, and killing an entire lawn deliberately before a renovation. What they cannot do is remove a weed from turf. They leave a dead brown patch the exact size and shape of your spray pattern, and then you reseed it.

This is the most expensive mistake available in this category and it costs nothing to avoid.

Pre-Emergent or Post-Emergent

These are not competing products. They are different jobs on different dates, and most lawns need both in the same year.

The single most wasted application in lawn care is a pre-emergent spread over visible weeds. It is a barrier, not a cure — it stops the next generation and ignores the one in front of you.

The Seven Chemistries Worth Knowing

1. Three-way broadleaf (2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba)

The default American lawn herbicide, and correctly so — it covers the majority of broadleaf weeds and it is cheap per thousand square feet. Systemic, so it reaches the root, which is why a dandelion treated with it does not come back the way one burned with a contact product does.

Limitations worth knowing: dicamba is absorbed through roots, so keep it outside the dripline of trees and shrubs; and it does nothing to grassy weeds or sedges.

The third ingredient is not always MCPP. Some three-ways are built on MCPA instead — a different phenoxy acid, same Group 4, and for an ordinary broadleaf list the two behave much alike. What differs is the channel: MCPA concentrates tend to carry agricultural-style labels, with rates quoted per acre and far more lawn per bottle. The one below covers up to 42,000 sq ft on a single quart, and its signal word is WARNING rather than CAUTION.

The label's grass restriction does not reach Hawaii. It limits St. Augustine and centipedegrass to Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, and neither is a warm-season lawn grass here. Bermuda is, and on it the label is broad. Watch temperature instead: spot treatment only above 80°F on carpetgrass, and turf injury is possible on small spot applications above 90°F.

2. Quinclorac, usually blended with a three-way

The answer to “what kills crabgrass without killing grass.” Quinclorac is effective on emerged crabgrass, and because it is normally sold combined with 2,4-D and dicamba, one bottle handles crabgrass and the broadleaf weeds around it.

If you only buy one post-emergent, this is the one with the widest reach for a typical lawn.

3. Pre-emergent (prodiamine)

4. Halosulfuron — the nutsedge exception

Nutsedge is not a grass and not a broadleaf. It regrows from tubers below the soil, which is why pulling it multiplies it and why broad-spectrum products ignore it. Halosulfuron is translocated to those tubers, and it is essentially the only consumer answer.

6. Iron (FeHEDTA)

The only one that handles moss, and the only one that avoids synthetic hormone herbicides entirely. Fast — visible within hours — and it works in cool weather down to 50°F when the three-ways are sluggish.

7. Triclopyr (and fluroxypyr)

The one to know about because a three-way bottle usually lacks it, and two common perennials need it. Penn State names herbicides containing triclopyr as giving the best control of wild violet, and triclopyr alone, fluroxypyr alone, or combinations of the two as best for ground ivy — the weeds that shrug off a standard three-way for physical reasons rather than chemical ones.

Two things separate it from the others on this list. It is a timing chemistry: Penn State finds autumn applications after the first frost translocate to crown tissues better than spring ones, so the month matters more here than anywhere else on this page. Neither broadleaf bottle above lists wild violet or ground ivy among its targets, so for those two the triclopyr products are a separate purchase — and which one depends entirely on your grass, because most are labelled for brush rather than turf. Both options are laid out on that page.

What the Hawaii Weed List Actually Requires

The matrix above is national. Which rows of it you need is not — it is set by the species local extension programs document. For a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 9a, 10a, 10b, 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, 13a, here is what the documented list means you have to own.

  • A three-way broadleaf product — non-negotiable. Oxalis; Spurges in hot compacted strips are documented here — exactly what 2,4-D, mecoprop and dicamba were built for.
  • And a triclopyr product for the ones the three-way will not reach. Dollarweed on over-watered turf is on the local list, and it is where a plain three-way runs out. These are the weeds behind most "the weed killer did not work" verdicts: expect to need triclopyr in the mix, the right month rather than any month, and a second application.
  • Prevention, because the usual crabgrass rescue is off the table here. Goosegrass; Crabgrass are on the local list — but the product everyone else reaches for once it is up, quinclorac, is rated NR on St. Augustine and centipede, and the label wording is "do not apply to St. Augustinegrass". On these lawns the pre-emergent barrier is not the cheaper option, it is close to the only one. Miss the window and the honest answer is often to live with it until next spring.
  • Halosulfuron, as a separate purchase. Kyllinga and nutsedge in wet ground is documented in this state, and no broad-spectrum lawn product controls it. Budget for a second bottle rather than expecting one to cover it.

Your dates, not the label's

Every product above is useless outside its window, and the windows here are: pre-emergent There is no single spring flush to time against — warm-season weeds germinate through much of the year, so pre-emergent here is a repeated programme on label intervals rather than a February or March decision; post-emergent Year-round where the turf is actively growing, which is most of the time; the constraint is heat and drought stress on the leeward side rather than a dormant season. Feeding runs Rate follows species: hybrid bermudagrass has the highest requirement, zoysia, St. Augustine and seashore paspalum are intermediate, and centipede needs the least. Because growth never stops and the soils leach, the pattern is lighter and more frequent rather than two or three big applications — and seashore paspalum wants nitrate-N rather than ammonium-N during establishment, and establishment Any time of year, given water. Sod, sprigs and plugs are the normal route for the species grown here; the limiting factor is irrigation on the leeward side, not the calendar — which matters because a pre-emergent blocks grass seed as effectively as weed seed.

Frost brackets all of it. First frost: no date at all — frost reaches only the high summits of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Haleakala, never the elevations where lawns are kept. Last frost: no date at all — Hawaii has no frost season, which is why a mainland seasonal calendar has to be rebuilt here rather than shifted a few weeks. Heat, soil and the grass you are spraying over

Hawaii soils are Volcanic soils throughout, of two very different kinds: Andisols formed in ash on the younger slopes (Hilo, the state soil, is one and covers about 21,000 acres of prime ground) and highly weathered Oxisols on the old windward slopes, draining: Fast on the ash Andisols, which have low bulk density and take water readily, and fast again on young volcanic ground that has barely weathered; slow only in the deep clay pockets, so on most Hawaii lawns the problem is nutrients leaving rather than water sitting. Free-draining ground shortens pre-emergent residual, so split the barrier into two applications. Soil pH reads Usually acidic, and on the Oxisols strongly so: millennia of high rainfall have leached the base cations out and left low-CEC oxidic clays that hold very little. What your grass rules OUT

Grass tolerance disqualifies products more often than weed susceptibility qualifies them, and Hawaii lawns run Bermuda, Zoysia (both Zoysia matrella and Zoysia japonica are common here), Seashore Paspalum (the salt-tolerant one, mown below an inch, and it barely responds to ammonium nitrogen — use nitrate-N to establish it), St. Augustine, Centipede (the lowest fertilizer requirement of the lot).   • St. Augustine and centipede are the fussiest lawns in the country about herbicide. Texas A&M's homeowner tolerance table is stark here. Across nine common actives, St. Augustine earns exactly one T — tolerant — and it is atrazine, the ingredient built for it. Quinclorac is NR, not recommended. Everything else, 2,4-D and dicamba included, comes back C for caution: labelled for the grass, but with a higher than normal risk of injury. Centipede fares worse still, adding 2,4-D to the NR column. This is the mirror image of a bermuda lawn, which tolerates all nine except atrazine — so advice written for one is close to backwards for the other, and the shelf gives you no warning.
  • Warm-season turf opens the professional options. Iodosulfuron chemistry is available to you and is the cheapest per thousand square feet by a wide margin, plus it tolerates the heat that shuts three-ways down here.

The product categories that actually suit Hawaii conditions are Light, frequent, slow-release nitrogen — leaching soils and year-round growth make the mainland two-or-three-applications model the wrong shape here; Nitrate-based nitrogen for establishing seashore paspalum, which responds poorly to ammonium sources; Little fire ant baits, used on a four-to-six-week cycle rather than as a one-off; Turf caterpillar controls for lawn armyworm and grass webworm, which are the state's leading turf insects; Micronutrient products for leached, low-CEC Oxisols, where deficiency symptoms are routinely mistaken for disease; Seashore paspalum sod for salt-affected and effluent-irrigated sites.

Local rules that narrow the shelf

  • Hawaii was the first state in the country to ban chlorpyrifos, under Act 45 of 2018 — the outright ban took full effect on January 1, 2023, with no permits available after that
  • The same Act created a 100-foot buffer zone around schools during school hours in which restricted-use pesticides may not be applied, and annual reporting of restricted-use pesticide applications to the Department of Agriculture
  • Hawaii has no statewide restriction on phosphorus in lawn fertilizer, and the phosphorus question here is agronomic anyway: volcanic soils fix it, so the useful figure is availability

What those mean for the products on this page:

  • Check the middle number on any weed-and-feed bag before you buy it: the phosphorus rule applies to the fertilizer half regardless of what the herbicide half does, and most lawn weed-and-feed is sold in a zero-phosphorus formulation precisely because of rules like this one.
  • The setback is measured from water, not from your property line, and it applies to the spreader as much as to the sprayer. Map the wet edge of the property once and treat it as permanently off-limits to broadcast application.

The seasonal sequence these fit into in Hawaii:

  • Spring: There is no green-up to wait for; treat this as a period of the year rather than a starting gun

  • Winter: Growth slows but does not stop, and neither does mowing
  • Winter: Windward rain increases, so pull back irrigation and watch for disease rather than drought

  • Winter: Plan any soil amendment now, because the leached Oxisols need feeding little and often all year rather than corrected once

Two Products That Look Like Shortcuts

And the real long game is not chemical. A dense, correctly mown, correctly watered lawn keeps weed seeds from germinating in the first place, which is cheaper than every product on this page — how often to water your lawn is a better first purchase than any of them, because it costs about eight dollars of hardware.

What is the best weed killer for lawns?

The one matched to your weed, because no single product covers all of them. Broadleaf weeds like dandelion and clover need a three-way product (2,4-D, mecoprop, dicamba). Crabgrass after it has emerged needs quinclorac. Nutsedge needs halosulfuron and nothing else works on it. Moss needs iron. Anything you want to prevent rather than kill needs a pre-emergent months earlier. Buying by brand instead of by active ingredient is why most people have a shelf of half-used bottles.

Will Roundup kill my lawn?

Yes. Glyphosate is non-selective — it kills every plant it touches, grass included, and it leaves a dead brown patch that you then have to reseed. It has legitimate uses on driveways, gravel and beds, and for killing a whole lawn before renovation. It is never a lawn weed killer. This is the single most expensive mistake in the category, and it is entirely avoidable by reading one word on the label: selective.

What kills crabgrass without killing grass?

Before it comes up, a pre-emergent such as prodiamine, applied when soil temperature reaches about 55°F. After it comes up, quinclorac — it is the active ingredient that kills emerged crabgrass while leaving most lawn grasses standing, and it is usually sold combined with 2,4-D and dicamba so the same bottle also handles broadleaf weeds. Ordinary three-way broadleaf products do nothing to crabgrass, which is the most common reason people think a weed killer failed.

What is the difference between pre-emergent and post-emergent weed killer?

Pre-emergents stop seeds from establishing and do nothing to a weed you can already see — they are a calendar product, applied weeks before germination based on soil temperature. Post-emergents kill weeds that are already growing and do nothing to prevent the next flush. Most lawns need both in the same year, on different dates, and neither substitutes for the other. Applying a pre-emergent to visible weeds is the most common wasted application in lawn care.

Can you use one weed killer for everything?

No, and the products that come closest are the professional ones. A three-way broadleaf product plus a quinclorac product covers most of what a typical lawn has, but nutsedge needs its own chemistry, moss needs iron, and prevention needs a pre-emergent. Professional products such as Celsius WG cover a wider spectrum in one bag, which is why they cost more per package and considerably less per thousand square feet.

How long do you have to wait to mow after spraying weeds?

Three to four days after spraying, and do not mow for two to three days beforehand either. Those are Iowa State Extension's figures, and the two intervals exist for different reasons: the wait before treatment leaves the weed enough leaf area to intercept the spray, while the wait afterwards lets it absorb the herbicide and translocate it to the roots. Removing the foliage on either side throws away most of the dose. Water runs the other way for granular products — a liquid wants no rain or irrigation for 24 hours, while a granular weed-and-feed wants wet foliage at application so the granules stick to the leaf.
