Most of the damage done to lawns in spring is done in March, by people trying to help.
Raking hard on ground that has not firmed up. Feeding grass that has not started growing. Putting crabgrass preventer down six weeks before crabgrass would have germinated, so it has faded by the time it matters. Wisconsin Extension’s framing is worth quoting almost directly: patience is the key ingredient in spring lawn work.

The Only Trigger That Works
Soil temperature, not air temperature, and not the date.
They diverge by weeks. A warm week in March raises air temperature and barely moves the soil, which is why the first nice weekend is the worst possible cue for starting spring work. Crabgrass germinates when the soil holds near 55°F for several consecutive days — some programs wait for closer to 60°F, and warm-season states run higher triggers again.
A soil thermometer costs about ten dollars and it is the single most useful thing you can buy for spring. Push it two inches down, early in the morning, several days running. When it holds, you act.

Two things about this list are worth noticing. Steps 3 and 6 are mutually exclusive in the same season. And step 7 is conditional, not annual — most lawns do not need it every year.

The Two Pairs That Cancel Each Other
Spring is the only season where two standard jobs actively undo two others. Both pairs catch people every year.
Pre-emergent versus grass seed
A pre-emergent is a germination barrier. It does not distinguish your grass seed from a weed seed — it stops both, for as long as it lasts.
So if you lay a crabgrass barrier in April, spring seeding is off the table for that season. And if you seed in April, you have no crabgrass protection.
Which to choose: if the lawn is thin, choose the seed. Thin turf is the condition that let crabgrass in, and a barrier over thin turf just postpones the problem to next year while the gaps stay open. If the lawn is dense and you simply want to keep crabgrass out, choose the barrier and do your seeding in the autumn window instead.
Heavy spring nitrogen versus autumn feeding
On a cool-season lawn, autumn is the important feeding — that is when the grass builds roots and stores energy. A heavy spring feeding spends those reserves on top growth: more mowing, softer tissue, more disease, and a shallower root system heading into summer — the season that punishes exactly that.
Light spring feeding is fine. Heavy spring feeding is borrowing from the autumn you already paid for.
Warm-season lawns invert this: they are fed after full green-up and through the growing season, so a spring feeding is correct there — just not before green-up.
What Not to Do in Spring
Do not rake hard on soft ground. Extension guidance is a leaf rake, used lightly, to lift matted dead blades and let air in. A garden rake on wet spring soil pulls crowns out of ground that has not firmed up, which thins the lawn you were trying to fix. Those crowns may already be the weak point: winter lawn care covers why late-winter freeze-thaw is where most of the damage you are looking at was actually done.
Do not dethatch as a ritual. Dethatching is for a thatch layer around an inch or more, in cool weather with adequate moisture. Cut a wedge of turf and look at the side before you rent anything — most lawns do not have enough thatch to justify it.
Do not feed before growth. Not when it thaws, not when it first greens. Extension guidance in northern states puts the first feeding at early May in an average year, after mowing has resumed.
Do not scalp the first cut. The temptation to cut short and “start clean” is the fastest route to crabgrass, because scalping lights the soil where the seed is waiting. Details: lawn mowing height.
Do not bag the clippings. They return up to a quarter of the season’s nitrogen and they do not cause thatch — why bagging costs you.
Spring Lawn Care in Hawaii
The sequence above is national. The dates are not, and in Hawaii they come from researched local windows rather than a month. For a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 9a, 10a, 10b, 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, 13a:

Warm-season lawns wait for full green-up before feeding, which puts the Hawaii feeding window well after the pre-emergent one — so the two jobs are naturally sequenced here rather than competing.
What early spring does to the ground here
- Soil: Volcanic soils throughout, of two very different kinds: Andisols formed in ash on the younger slopes (Hilo, the state soil, is one and covers about 21,000 acres of prime ground) and highly weathered Oxisols on the old windward slopes, draining: Fast on the ash Andisols, which have low bulk density and take water readily, and fast again on young volcanic ground that has barely weathered; slow only in the deep clay pockets, so on most Hawaii lawns the problem is nutrients leaving rather than water sitting. This is the soil where the do-not-rake-early rule bites hardest — ground that holds water stays soft for weeks, and raking or mowing it early tears crowns and compacts wheel lines that last all season.
- Soil pH: Usually acidic, and on the Oxisols strongly so: millennia of high rainfall have leached the base cations out and left low-CEC oxidic clays that hold very little. Both soil orders also fix phosphorus, so a phosphorus figure on a Hawaii soil report needs reading as availability rather than as total — spring is when a soil test is worth doing, because it is the one result that changes what the whole year's feeding should be.
- Rain and humidity: The steepest rainfall gradient in the United States, from leeward slopes under 20 inches a year to windward mountain slopes measured in hundreds. Two lawns twenty miles apart can need irrigation and drainage respectively. Humidity: Humid year-round on the windward sides, drier on the leeward, with trade winds rather than seasons doing the work — and no winter dormancy at all, so growth and mowing never stop — together these decide how fast the first flush of growth arrives and how tight the mowing interval gets.
- The weeds this spring will produce: Goosegrass; Crabgrass; Kyllinga and nutsedge in wet ground; Oxalis; Spurges in hot compacted strips — the pre-emergent handles the seed-germinating ones, and everything else waits for the post-emergent window.
- Diseases to expect as it warms: Large patch and brown patch (Rhizoctonia) on zoysia and St. Augustine, running whenever warm humid conditions persist — which on the windward side is most of the year; Dollar spot; Pythium diseases where heat, humidity and standing water meet, and pests Lawn armyworm — present on every major island, and Hawaii's species is apparently not found anywhere else in the United States, so mainland guidance about it is not about this insect; Grass webworm and the other turf caterpillars, which CTAHR treats as the state's leading turf insect group; Little fire ant, a relatively recent arrival whose sting raises welts that burn for days; it travels in potted plants, mulch, firewood and soil, and control means baiting every four to six weeks until surveys come back clean — a heavy spring feeding makes the first list more likely, not less.
- Grasses grown here: Bermuda, Zoysia (both Zoysia matrella and Zoysia japonica are common here), Seashore Paspalum (the salt-tolerant one, mown below an inch, and it barely responds to ammonium nitrogen — use nitrate-N to establish it), St. Augustine, Centipede (the lowest fertilizer requirement of the lot) — and in a mixed yard the spring sequence is per-grass rather than per-lawn.

- Local rule: Quarantine and invasive-species rules matter to lawn work in a way they do not on the mainland — soil, mulch and potted plants are how little fire ant and other pests move between islands and properties
- Locally suited product categories: Light, frequent, slow-release nitrogen — leaching soils and year-round growth make the mainland two-or-three-applications model the wrong shape here; Nitrate-based nitrogen for establishing seashore paspalum, which responds poorly to ammonium sources; Little fire ant baits, used on a four-to-six-week cycle rather than as a one-off; Turf caterpillar controls for lawn armyworm and grass webworm, which are the state's leading turf insects; Micronutrient products for leached, low-CEC Oxisols, where deficiency symptoms are routinely mistaken for disease; Seashore paspalum sod for salt-affected and effluent-irrigated sites.

- Fall: Read the phosphorus figure as availability, not total: these soils fix it
- Fall: Adjust irrigation as the trades shift rather than as temperatures fall
- Winter: Growth slows but does not stop, and neither does mowing
- Winter: Windward rain increases, so pull back irrigation and watch for disease rather than drought
- Winter: Leeward lawns still need water through this period; there is no dormancy to hide behind
- Winter: Plan any soil amendment now, because the leached Oxisols need feeding little and often all year rather than corrected once

The Honest Summary
Spring lawn care is mostly restraint. The tasks are easy; the sequencing is what separates a good lawn from a lawn that spends June recovering from April.
Wait for the ground to firm up. Rake lightly. Mow before you feed. Measure the soil before you apply a barrier. Feed once the grass is actually growing. And pick either the barrier or the seed, because you cannot have both.
The single most useful correction most people can make is simply starting two to four weeks later than instinct says.
