Most spring lawn damage is done in March by people being helpful. Spring lawn care runs on soil temperature, not the calendar — and the order matters. Guide for New Mexico, where the dominant grass is Bermuda.

Most of the damage done to lawns in spring is done in March, by people trying to help.
Raking hard on ground that has not firmed up. Feeding grass that has not started growing. Putting crabgrass preventer down six weeks before crabgrass would have germinated, so it has faded by the time it matters. Wisconsin Extension’s framing is worth quoting almost directly: patience is the key ingredient in spring lawn work.

The Only Trigger That Works
Soil temperature, not air temperature, and not the date.
They diverge by weeks. A warm week in March raises air temperature and barely moves the soil, which is why the first nice weekend is the worst possible cue for starting spring work. Crabgrass germinates when the soil holds near 55°F for several consecutive days — some programs wait for closer to 60°F, and warm-season states run higher triggers again.
A soil thermometer costs about ten dollars and it is the single most useful thing you can buy for spring. Push it two inches down, early in the morning, several days running. When it holds, you act.

Two things about this list are worth noticing. Steps 3 and 6 are mutually exclusive in the same season. And step 7 is conditional, not annual — most lawns do not need it every year.

The Two Pairs That Cancel Each Other
Spring is the only season where two standard jobs actively undo two others. Both pairs catch people every year.
Pre-emergent versus grass seed
A pre-emergent is a germination barrier. It does not distinguish your grass seed from a weed seed — it stops both, for as long as it lasts.
So if you lay a crabgrass barrier in April, spring seeding is off the table for that season. And if you seed in April, you have no crabgrass protection.
Which to choose: if the lawn is thin, choose the seed. Thin turf is the condition that let crabgrass in, and a barrier over thin turf just postpones the problem to next year while the gaps stay open. If the lawn is dense and you simply want to keep crabgrass out, choose the barrier and do your seeding in the autumn window instead.
Heavy spring nitrogen versus autumn feeding
On a cool-season lawn, autumn is the important feeding — that is when the grass builds roots and stores energy. A heavy spring feeding spends those reserves on top growth: more mowing, softer tissue, more disease, and a shallower root system heading into summer — the season that punishes exactly that.
Light spring feeding is fine. Heavy spring feeding is borrowing from the autumn you already paid for.
Warm-season lawns invert this: they are fed after full green-up and through the growing season, so a spring feeding is correct there — just not before green-up.
What Not to Do in Spring
Do not rake hard on soft ground. Extension guidance is a leaf rake, used lightly, to lift matted dead blades and let air in. A garden rake on wet spring soil pulls crowns out of ground that has not firmed up, which thins the lawn you were trying to fix. Those crowns may already be the weak point: winter lawn care covers why late-winter freeze-thaw is where most of the damage you are looking at was actually done.
Do not dethatch as a ritual. Dethatching is for a thatch layer around an inch or more, in cool weather with adequate moisture. Cut a wedge of turf and look at the side before you rent anything — most lawns do not have enough thatch to justify it.
Do not feed before growth. Not when it thaws, not when it first greens. Extension guidance in northern states puts the first feeding at early May in an average year, after mowing has resumed.
Do not scalp the first cut. The temptation to cut short and “start clean” is the fastest route to crabgrass, because scalping lights the soil where the seed is waiting. Details: lawn mowing height.
Do not bag the clippings. They return up to a quarter of the season’s nitrogen and they do not cause thatch — why bagging costs you.
Spring Lawn Care in New Mexico
The sequence above is national. The dates are not, and in New Mexico they come from researched local windows rather than a month. For a Bermuda lawn across USDA zones 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a, 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a:

New Mexico runs two grass families on the same street, and their spring sequences differ by more than a month. The table above is the fescue-and-cool-season reading; warm-season lawns here wait for full green-up before anything.
What early spring does to the ground here
- Soil: Calcareous desert soils across the basins and mesas, with caliche — a cemented lime hardpan — at shallow depth in much of the state; deeper alluvium along the Rio Grande and the river valleys, draining: Fast through the sandy desert soils until it reaches caliche, at which point it stops — a shallow lime pan perches water, blocks roots and turns a deep watering into a shallow one, so the depth to caliche matters more here than the surface texture does. Free-draining ground firms up earlier than most, so the local spring start can genuinely be earlier — but soil temperature still sets the pre-emergent date, not how dry the surface feels.
- Soil pH: Alkaline, and specifically lime-buffered: NMSU's position is that soil pH here is controlled by the presence of calcium carbonate, which is why a percent-lime figure is a useful thing to test for and why pushing pH down is largely futile. Above pH 7.6 the iron chelate you buy matters — NMSU names EDDHA or DTPA over EDTA, and warns that DTPA should not be used above 7.6 at all — spring is when a soil test is worth doing, because it is the one result that changes what the whole year's feeding should be.
- Rain and humidity: Roughly 8 to 15 inches across most of the populated areas, with a large share of it arriving in the North American monsoon between about June 15 and September 30 as heavy convective storms — which run off caliche and compacted ground rather than soaking in. Humidity: Arid to semi-arid with very low humidity most of the year, broken by the monsoon — and the elevation range means Chama and Las Cruces share almost nothing climatically — together these decide how fast the first flush of growth arrives and how tight the mowing interval gets.
- The weeds this spring will produce: Crabgrass in irrigated turf; Puncturevine — goathead, the signature southwestern hot-dry-ground annual and a tyre and bare-foot problem as much as a turf one; Field bindweed; Kochia and Russian thistle at the dry margins; Khakiweed and spurges in thin, hot, compacted ground — the pre-emergent handles the seed-germinating ones, and everything else waits for the post-emergent window.
- Diseases to expect as it warms: Iron chlorosis — not a pathogen, but the most common reason a New Mexico lawn is yellow, and the one where buying the wrong chelate wastes the money entirely; Salinity injury from irrigation water and from salts accumulating above caliche, which reads as drought stress that watering does not fix; Spring dead spot on bermudagrass, appearing as the lawn greens up, and pests White grubs from May and June beetles and masked chafer; Chinch bugs in hot dry sandy strips, which describes most of the state; Bermudagrass mites in the south — a heavy spring feeding makes the first list more likely, not less.
- Grasses grown here: Bermuda, Kentucky Bluegrass (the northern half — NMSU's line is that cool-season grasses work anywhere north of Socorro, plus Cloudcroft, Ruidoso and Silver City), Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, Buffalograss (the native warm-season option, and the one that matches the rainfall rather than fighting it), Zoysia — and in a mixed yard the spring sequence is per-grass rather than per-lawn.

- Local rule: Municipal water restrictions and time-of-day watering rules in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces constrain a lawn programme here far more than any chemical rule does
- Locally suited product categories: EDDHA-chelated iron specifically — NMSU names EDDHA as stable across all soil pH and warns that DTPA fails above pH 7.6, which covers much of the state, and EDTA is the wrong choice here outright; Buffalograss and improved bermudagrass seed and sod, chosen against the 24-inch warm-season water figure rather than on appearance; Irrigation audit equipment, catch cups and pressure-regulating heads, because a distribution uniformity near 0.50 is the default rather than a fault; Soil probes, to find the depth to caliche before designing any watering schedule; Gypsum where a saturated-paste test shows sodicity, not as a routine soil conditioner; Spring dead spot fungicides for bermudagrass lawns, applied in autumn rather than at the symptom.

- Spring: Pre-emergent on soil temperature — February in Las Cruces, May in Taos, and treating those as the same date is the commonest mistake here
- Spring: Check the depth to caliche with a probe or a shovel before planning any irrigation change; it sets how deep a soaking can physically go
- Spring: Do not lime, ever, unless a test asks: pH here is held up by calcium carbonate already in the soil
- Spring: Audit the irrigation system before the pre-monsoon heat, not after it
- Summer: NMSU's water figures are the ones to plan against: cool-season turf uses about 0.26 to 0.50 inch a day in summer, roughly 1.8 to 3.5 inches a week, and about 38 inches over a year, against about 24 inches for warm-season turf
- Summer: Schedule irrigation for the driest quarter of the lawn rather than the average — residential systems here average a lower-quarter distribution uniformity around 0.50, so half the lawn gets far less than the timer suggests
- Summer: During the monsoon, turn the controller down: heavy convective rain on caliche runs off, but it still resets the soil moisture the system is watering for
- Summer: If the lawn is yellow, treat it as iron availability before nitrogen, and buy EDDHA-chelated iron rather than EDTA
- Fall: Cool-season lawns in the north: late August into September is both the seeding window and the most valuable feeding
- Fall: Warm-season lawns in the south: last feeding well before dormancy, and expect colour loss from the first frost regardless
- Fall: Take a soil test and specify the New Mexico set — Olsen phosphorus, saturated paste EC, sodium adsorption ratio and percent lime
- Fall: Reduce irrigation gradually rather than stopping it; a dry autumn here is normal and turf goes into winter thirsty
- Winter: Warm-season lawns are dormant and brown from first frost until the ground warms; that is normal, not winterkill
- Winter: Water occasionally through a dry, windy winter — especially in the north, where an open winter desiccates turf with the ground frozen

The Honest Summary
Spring lawn care is mostly restraint. The tasks are easy; the sequencing is what separates a good lawn from a lawn that spends June recovering from April.
Wait for the ground to firm up. Rake lightly. Mow before you feed. Measure the soil before you apply a barrier. Feed once the grass is actually growing. And pick either the barrier or the seed, because you cannot have both.
The single most useful correction most people can make is simply starting two to four weeks later than instinct says.
