Spring Dead Spot and Summer Patch: Why Sprays Fail

Spring dead spot and summer patch attack roots, not leaves — so they mimic drought, shrug off leaf sprays, and return to the same spot bigger each year.

A circle of dead grass appears. You water it. Nothing happens. Next year it is back in the same place, slightly larger.

That last detail is the whole diagnosis. NC State’s observation about spring dead spot is that the patches recur in the same spot each year and increase in size by up to several inches each season — and no amount of drought stress behaves that way. Drought appears where the water does not reach, and it moves when your watering does.

A patch that returns to the same square foot and grows is not a watering problem. It is one of a family of fungi that extension pathologists group together as the ectotrophic root-infecting fungi — the ERI group — and they all share one property that changes everything about how you treat them: they attack roots and crowns, not leaves.

Why they fool everyone

The fungus colonises roots and crowns, so the leaves die because the plant beneath them can no longer take up water. The symptom is, functionally, drought — the grass really is short of water, just not because the soil is dry. Watering more does not fix it, and on most of these it improves conditions for the fungus.

Three tells separate them from actual drought:

  • They return to the same place, year after year, growing.
  • They have edges — patches, rings and crescents with a defined boundary rather than the gradual fade of a dry area.
  • Water does not help. Drought stress improves within days of a soaking. This does not.

Which one is which

The four are close relatives with different hosts and different calendars. The grass you have narrows it to one or two immediately.

Two of those deserve a note on timing, because it is the most counterintuitive part of the group.

Spring dead spot is an autumn and winter disease you see in spring. The infection and the damage happen during the previous season while the bermuda is going dormant. What appears at green-up is the result. So a treatment applied when you first notice the patches is months too late for those patches — it is next year’s application, made early.

Take-all root rot works the other way round: it tends to show after the turf has been stressed by something else, which makes it easy to attribute to the original stress rather than the disease that followed it.

First, rule out grubs

Before any of this, do the one test that separates a root disease from the other thing that destroys roots.

Grab the turf at the edge of the patch and pull. If it lifts away like a piece of carpet, the roots have been severed and you are looking at grubs, not a fungus — and there will be pale C-shaped larvae in the soil underneath. Root-disease turf is rotted rather than cut, so it generally stays attached even when the plant is dead.

Which one your region gets

Host grass decides this more than latitude does. Spring dead spot follows bermuda through the South and the transition zone; summer patch and necrotic ring spot follow Kentucky bluegrass through the Midwest and Northeast; take-all root rot follows St. Augustine along the Gulf Coast and into the desert Southwest.

41 of 50 states list at least one root or crown disease among their high-risk diseases. The rest are not immune — these pathogens are simply outranked locally by foliar diseases or insects.

Two things worth reading out of that table.

A listed disease is not automatically your disease. North Carolina and Tennessee both list spring dead spot, and both are dominated by tall fescue — a grass spring dead spot does not affect. It is there because bermuda is a common secondary grass in both. So if your fescue lawn has a recurring patch, spring dead spot is not the answer; something else on that state’s list is.

Two states list none of them. California and Pennsylvania have no root or crown disease among their high-risk entries, which does not make one impossible but does mean a recurring patch there deserves the foliar diseases, the insects and drought ruled out first.

Why most fungicide applications fail

Two reasons, and both are about delivery rather than product choice.

The active has to reach the roots. These are root-infecting fungi. A product sprayed onto leaf blades and left to dry there is in the wrong place by a couple of inches. Root-disease applications need watering in — and the label will say so, which is the line most people skip.

The timing runs ahead of the symptom. For outbreaks appearing in late spring or summer, the guidance is an early spring application followed by repeats on 21 to 28 day intervals. Not a spray when the patch appears. By the time turf has collapsed, the roots that were going to die have died, and a fungicide protects tissue that is already gone.

For spring dead spot the gap is a full season wide. NC State:

“Fungicides are available for spring dead spot control, but they must be applied preventatively in the fall. Applications are most effective when soil temperatures are between 60 and 80°F.”

An autumn soil-temperature window, for a symptom you will not see until green-up. Which also means the trigger is a reading rather than a date — the same soil thermometer the spring pre-emergent window needs is what finds this one, because 60 to 80°F in the soil does not map onto a calendar you can print. And it is a specific volume rather than a spray:

“To move the fungicide into the root zone, apply in a high volume of water (5 gallons per 1,000 square feet) or water in with at least 1/8” of irrigation immediately after application.”

Put those together and the honest position is that fungicide is a preventive tool here, on a lawn with a documented history, not a rescue for a patch you noticed this morning. If you have had the same rings for three years, next season’s programme is worth planning. If this is the first year, spend the effort on the cultural side below and see what happens.

What actually reduces them

The cultural measures are not filler on this group — they are the primary control, because they attack where the fungi live.

Core-aerate aggressively, and reduce thatch. Every source on these diseases names the same pair: relieve compaction and reduce thatch through core aeration and vertical mowing. The thatch layer and the upper root zone are the habitat. Removing them is not a general tonic here, it is targeted.

NC State puts a number on aggressively that most homeowners would not guess:

“Areas that are severely affected by spring dead spot should be hollow-tine aerified at least three times per year, during the summer when bermudagrass is most actively growing.”

Three times a year, and in summer rather than autumn — because the point is not the usual autumn renovation, it is repeatedly opening the root zone during the weeks the grass can actually recover from being opened.

Stop overfeeding — and on spring dead spot, check which nitrogen. Excess nitrogen produces the soft growth that makes every disease in this family worse, so the real number matters more than the bag’s; our how much fertilizer do I need guide has the arithmetic.

There is a second question here with a genuinely regional answer, and it is one of the few places on this site where the correct product depends on where you live. Two different fungi cause spring dead spot, they dominate in different parts of the country, and they responded to opposite nitrogen sources. NC State:

“Ophiosphaerella korrae, the most common pathogen in the eastern United States was controlled effectively by application of calcium nitrate as the sole nitrogen source. On the other hand, O. herpotricha, the most common pathogen in Midwestern states, was suppressed by ammonium sulfate.”

Read the consequence carefully: the wrong choice is not neutral, it is the source that suppressed the other species. So calcium nitrate in the eastern states, ammonium sulfate in the Midwest — and if you are on the border, or a season of the expected source does nothing, that is a question for your state’s extension turf programme rather than for a map. And one recommendation that does not survive the research, which is worth knowing because it is repeated everywhere:

“Fall applications of potassium, which have been frequently recommended for spring dead spot management, had no effect on the disease in our research.”

Fix the drainage. These are wet-soil diseases. An area that stays saturated is an area that keeps the pathogen comfortable, and no chemistry compensates for that.

Then reseed — last. Putting seed into a recurring patch before dealing with thatch, compaction and drainage is the repeat-repair mistake from our bare spots guide, and the pathogen is still in that soil. The honest summary

Hard to diagnose, easy to mistreat, and both for the same reason: the damage is at the roots and the symptom is on the surface.

The sequence: notice the recurrence, tug the turf to rule out grubs, match the host grass to the disease, then accept that the useful work is aeration, thatch reduction, drainage and restraint with nitrogen — with fungicide as a planned preventive on a lawn that has earned one, watered in, months ahead of the patch.

What not to do is reseed the same square foot every spring and call it maintenance.
