Mushrooms in Lawn: There Is Nothing to Spray

Illinois Extension: there are no recommended fungicides for controlling these species. Mushrooms are not a lawn disease — they are something buried, rotting.

Heavy rain for three days, then a crop of mushrooms across the lawn overnight, and the instinct is immediate: what do I spray?

Nothing. Not because it is not worth the trouble — because the product does not exist. Illinois Extension, on ordinary lawn mushrooms:

“There are no recommended fungicides for controlling these species.”

That is not a gap in the market. It is a statement about what the mushrooms are.

Why There Is Nothing to Spray

A fungicide works by protecting living plant tissue from a pathogen that is trying to colonise it. That is what our brown patch and dollar spot pages are about — a fungus attacking the grass, and a product defending it.

A lawn mushroom is not doing that. Illinois Extension:

“These are feeding on organic matter in the soil”“naturally occurring fungal organisms doing as nature intended, breaking down once-living material.”

The grass is not the food. There is no infection to interrupt, so there is nothing for a fungicide to defend against. Illinois says so without hedging: “there are no recommended fungicides for controlling these species.”

And Illinois goes further on the damage question: mushrooms not associated with fairy rings “don’t directly damage lawns.”

They Are Eating Something You Cannot See

Clemson names the menu:

“Mushrooms are the above-ground fruiting bodies of fungi that live in the soil. These fungi feed on decaying organic matter, such as old roots, stumps and thatch.”

Which explains the two patterns people notice and misread.

Mushrooms everywhere after heavy rain — the soil has organic matter in it and it got wet. That is a description of functioning soil biology, not a symptom. Clemson: “mushrooms will disappear on their own when the weather becomes dry or turns colder.”

The same spot, every year — something specific is buried there. A stump ground down and covered over, a construction offcut, a root system from a tree removed before you moved in. Illinois’s instruction for that case is the only real fix available: “if many mushrooms appear in an area, dig up and remove the buried organic matter.”

That is why “how do I kill them” has no satisfying answer and “what is under there” does.

The things that shorten the season

Neither of these reaches the fungus, and both are worth doing anyway:

  • Water less, or let the surface dry between irrigations. It removes the trigger, and it is what our watering guide recommends for the grass’s own sake.
  • Relieve compaction. Better drainage means the surface stays wet for less time after rain. Aeration is the version of that which actually improves the lawn.
  • Deal with thatch if you have measured more than half an inch — it is on Clemson’s list of what these fungi feed on, and dethatching has a more important reason to happen.

The One Reason to Act Today

Everything above says wait. This does not.

Illinois Extension: “Some may have a foul odor, some may be poisonous. If children or pets contacting the mushrooms are a concern” — remove them.

Two practical rules follow, and neither depends on identifying anything:

  1. Nobody eats an unidentified lawn mushroom. Not a person, not a dog. Toxicity is not visible, edible and dangerous species can look similar, and a lawn is not a place anyone forages carefully.
  2. If a dog has eaten one, that is a vet call rather than a wait. Take a piece of the mushroom with you if you can do it safely — identification changes the treatment.

If you have a dog or a toddler and a flush of mushrooms, the mowing is not about the lawn’s appearance. Do it the same day.

A Ring Is a Different Problem

Scattered mushrooms after rain are one thing. A circle is another, and this one does involve the grass.

Illinois describes the two faces of it: “circles or arcs of dark green, lush, fast-growing grass” or “a ring of brown or dead grass”, caused by fungus breaking down large buried materials such as “old tree stumps, roots, logs, lumber.”

Same biology, much bigger meal. And the damage mechanism is mechanical rather than infectious — Illinois notes that “grass inside the ring may turn brown” when the fungal mats block water movement. The soil becomes water-repellent, and the grass above it dries out while everything around it is watered normally. That is why watering harder often fails: the water is not getting in.

Where the Advice and the Labels Disagree

For fairy ring specifically, fungicides do enter the conversation — and here we have to report something we found rather than tidy it away.

Clemson’s fairy ring guidance names actives and example products: “fungicides containing flutolanil (Prostar), pyraclostrobin (Insignia), or azoxystrobin (Heritage, Headway, or Scott’s Disease Ex) will help suppress fairy ring fungi.”

We have read that last product’s label on EPA’s own database. It is registered as Lawn Fungus Granular, EPA Reg. No. 538-330, azoxystrobin 0.31%, and its disease list runs to nineteen entries: anthracnose, brown patch, cool weather brown patch, fusarium patch, gray leaf spot, leaf rust, necrotic ring spot, pink patch, powdery mildew, pythium blight, red thread, rhizoctonia large patch, snow mold, spring dead spot, stem rust, summer patch, take-all patch, yellow patch and zoysia patch.

Fairy ring is not one of them.

Clemson is not wrong about the active ingredient — azoxystrobin does have activity here, and Heritage and Headway are professional products where the use is established. The gap is between what an active can do and what a specific homeowner registration permits, and the label is the part that is legally binding. Applying that bag for fairy ring is a use its labelling does not carry, which how to read a pesticide label explains is the one line you do not cross.

One caveat in the registrant’s favour: this is a master label carrying bracketed optional text, so a specific retail bag can print a shorter list than the registration allows — but not a longer one. If your bag names fairy ring, believe your bag. Ours did not.

And note what Clemson claims even for the professional products: “help suppress.” Not control, not eliminate. For a homeowner, the honest sequence is the physical one — deal with the water repellency and the buried material first.

The Physical Sequence, and It Depends on the Type

Here is that sequence, and the first step is not an action — it is a classification, because the two common types of fairy ring want opposite treatments. Give a water-repellent ring more nitrogen and nothing improves; aerate a dark green ring and you have solved a problem it did not have.

NC State sorts them into three, and you can tell them apart by looking:

UC IPM’s list is finer — it separates a dark green ring with no dead turf from a dark green ring with dying turf beside it — but it lands in the same place, and names the mechanism behind the destructive one:

edaphic rings “frequently cause a hardened hydrophobic layer of soil above the areas of their active growth that prevents water penetration into the soil and often causes plant death”

NC State on where that layer comes from:

“Most cases of Type I fairy ring are caused by hydrophobic residues that are produced as the fairy ring fungus grows through the soil.”

So Type I is a localised drought inside a watered lawn, which is exactly why watering harder fails and why the fix is mechanical.

Type III: nothing

If the ring is mushrooms and the grass is fine, everything above in this article applies and there is nothing further to do. Mow them off; they leave when it dries.

Type I: break the layer, then soak it

NC State’s list for this type is specific:

“hollow-tine aerification, spiking, water-injection, application of soil surfactants, and heavy irrigation”

UC IPM’s version is the same protocol in plainer terms — “aeration followed by heavy watering for several weeks may help reduce symptoms; soil wetting agents may improve water penetration.”

Note “hollow-tine,” and note “for several weeks.” Both words are doing work. A hollow-tine (core) aerator removes a plug and opens a channel through the repellent layer; a spike aerator pushes soil aside and compacts the walls of its own hole, which is the wrong tool for this specific job. And a single heavy watering will not rewet a hydrophobic layer — UC IPM’s timescale is weeks.

If the rings are many, or the lawn is large

One gap we will not paper over: the protocol asks for a soil surfactant — a wetting agent whose job is to get water into repellent soil — and we do not stock one. The non-ionic surfactants on this site are herbicide adjuvants, which make a spray stick to a leaf. That is a different product for a different purpose, and substituting it here would accomplish nothing. Buy a product sold specifically as a soil wetting agent or soil penetrant for turf, and until we review one properly we would rather say so than sell you the wrong bottle.

Then water it — heavily, daily, and for longer than feels reasonable. Our how often to water your lawn guide is about the opposite habit (deep and infrequent) and this is a deliberate, temporary exception to it: you are rehydrating a layer, not maintaining a lawn.

Type II: feed the rest of the lawn up to it

A dark green ring is not damage. It is the fungus releasing nitrogen as it digests, so a band of your lawn is better fed than the rest of it — and the published fix is to raise the rest rather than to suppress the ring. NC State names two options, “nitrogen or iron”, applied to mask the symptom.

And a caution that comes from the wider literature rather than from us: masking a Type II ring with nitrogen on a cool-season lawn in summer risks over-stimulating the grass into a more serious disease. That is the same trap gray leaf spot and leaf spot and melting-out describe from the other side, and it is the reason iron is worth considering here — it changes the colour without changing the growth rate. How much fertilizer do I need has the arithmetic if you go the nitrogen route.

Underneath all three: thatch, and what is buried

Two recommendations apply whichever ring you have. NC State on thatch:

“Power raking or vertical mowing to remove excessive thatch will help to minimize fairy ring problems.”

And the prevention that only works once: NC State’s advice is to remove woody debris before establishing turf. Which is the same conclusion the top of this article reaches from the mushroom side — the organism is eating something buried, and taking that away is the only permanent answer. On an established lawn that means digging, and on a new one it means not burying construction lumber under the topsoil in the first place.

On fungicides, one honest addition. UC IPM reports that “fungicide applications of azoxystrobin appear to provide good control of the disease”, and NC State says fungicides are most effective preventatively, applied in spring once soil temperatures exceed 55°F and watered in so they reach the fungus. That does not change the label problem set out above — the homeowner bag we read does not carry fairy ring — but it does mean the active is genuinely effective, and the constraint is registration rather than chemistry. If you find a home-lawn product that names fairy ring on its label, the timing above is the timing to use, and soil temperature is measurable rather than guessable:

The Honest Summary

  1. Scattered mushrooms after rain? Nothing to buy. Mow them off if you want them gone; they leave when it dries.
  2. Same patch every year? Something is buried there. Digging it out is the only permanent answer.
  3. Kids or dogs outside? Remove them today, and nobody eats anything.
  4. A ring rather than a scatter? Different problem, and classify it before you buy anything. A ring of dead grass is water repellency: core-aerate it and soak it daily for weeks. A ring of darker, faster grass is free nitrogen: even out the rest of the lawn with iron rather than suppressing the ring. A ring of mushrooms with healthy turf needs nothing at all.

The counterintuitive part is worth ending on: a lawn producing mushrooms is a lawn with living soil in it. The mushrooms are what decomposition looks like when it happens to surface where you can see it.

How do I get rid of mushrooms in my lawn?

You remove the mushrooms, and you accept that you are not removing the fungus. Illinois Extension's instruction is to break or mow off the mushrooms when they first appear, and where many appear in one area, to dig up and remove the buried organic matter. That second half is the actual fix — the mushroom is a fruiting body and the organism is the wood, root or thatch it is digesting underground. Clemson adds the reassuring part: mushrooms will disappear on their own when the weather becomes dry or turns colder. If you do nothing at all, the problem ends by itself.

What fungicide kills lawn mushrooms?

None, and this is the sentence worth reading before you spend money. Illinois Extension states it plainly about ordinary lawn mushrooms: there are no recommended fungicides for controlling these species. A fungicide protects living grass tissue from a pathogen attacking it; a saprophytic mushroom is not attacking your grass, it is digesting something dead. There is nothing for the product to defend. The one exception is fairy ring, which is a genuinely different problem — and even there the labels are narrower than the advice, which we cover below.

Are mushrooms in my lawn a sign of disease?

Almost never, and the reframing is the useful part. Illinois describes them as naturally occurring fungal organisms doing as nature intended, breaking down once-living material, and Clemson says what that material is: these fungi feed on decaying organic matter, such as old roots, stumps and thatch. Mushrooms after heavy rain usually mean your soil has organic matter in it and it has been wet — which is a description of healthy soil, not a diagnosis. Illinois is explicit that mushrooms not associated with fairy rings do not directly damage lawns.

Are lawn mushrooms poisonous to dogs or children?

Some are, and this is the one reason to act promptly rather than wait for dry weather. Illinois Extension puts it directly: some may have a foul odor, some may be poisonous, and if children or pets contacting the mushrooms are a concern, remove them.
