Mulching Leaves Into the Lawn: MSU's Case Against the Rake
MSU research links mowed-in leaves to less fertilizer and, after three years, a near-100% drop in dandelions and crabgrass. The limits: thin, dry, and visible grass.

Raking is the fall ritual nobody questions: hours of work, a row of bags at the curb, and the lawn’s entire year of captured organic matter shipped off the property. The research case against it is stronger than most rituals survive — and it comes with two honest limits that decide when the rake still earns its hooks.
The Research Case
Michigan State’s turf program started studying the question for a practical reason: 1990s yard-waste bans forced the issue of what happens when ground-up leaves stay on the lawn. Their reported findings, from MSU’s own summary:
- Less fertilizer. Lawns receiving mulched leaves needed “less fertilizer to achieve that spring green up” — the leaf pieces decompose over winter and feed the turf on schedule.
- Fewer weeds, and not slightly. After three years of the practice, MSU reports “nearly a 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass.” The proposed mechanism is mundane: the shredded layer covers the bare-soil gaps where weed seeds germinate. We quote the figure as MSU reports it — it is their research and their number — and even a fraction of that effect would beat most things sold in the weed aisle.
This is the autumn half of a principle the site already argues for summer — returning clippings instead of bagging them keeps the same nutrients on the same lawn, and the leaves are simply the tree’s contribution.
That second finding deserves a beat. This site spends a lot of words on pre-emergents and crabgrass; MSU’s leaf work suggests the cheapest crabgrass intervention of all might be not raking.
The Technique: Thin, Dry, Visible
The whole method fits in a paragraph. Set the deck at its normal height — MSU mows at the highest setting — and mow over the leaves as they fall, “crossing over the leaves once or twice” so the pieces end up small. Weekly passes usually keep pace with the drop; a windy week may need two.
The limits are where lawns get hurt, and both extensions draw them clearly:
Capacity. MSU: “Up to 6 inches of leaves can be ‘mulched’ at a time, depending on the type of mower you have.” The dependency is real — a mulching deck swallows more than a push reel, and whatever mower you run, a sharp blade shreds where a dull one flattens.
And a third limit that is easy to miss, because it is about what stays behind rather than what the mower can take. Penn State draws the line at the finished product: “a layer up to about one-half inch in depth is beneficial to the lawn.”
Note that these two numbers are not in conflict — they measure different things. MSU’s six inches is how much whole leaf a mower can process in a pass. Penn State’s half inch is how much shredded material should be left sitting on the turf afterwards. Six inches of leaves shredded finely enough collapses to a fraction of that, which is why “crossing over the leaves once or twice” matters: the same volume either disappears into the canopy or sits on top of it, and the difference is particle size.
Penn State is direct about the technique too — “simply mow over the leaves on the lawn to shred them, walking or riding slowly to give the mower blades time to chop the leaves” — and about why it works: “shredded leaves decay much more quickly than whole leaves.” Slowly is the instruction people ignore. Walking pace is doing work here.
Condition. Iowa State’s version: mow when the layer is “thin and dry.” Wet leaves clump instead of shredding, and clumps smother.
The blade is worth a sentence of its own, because leaf mulching is the job that exposes a dull one. Grass forgives a blunt edge with a frayed tip you notice for a day; a leaf either gets shredded into pieces small enough to sift down or it gets folded over and left lying on top, which is Iowa State’s fail condition. If your autumn passes keep leaving visible debris on a thin, dry layer, sharpen before you blame the mower.

When Raking Still Wins
When the grass has disappeared. Iowa State: “A layer of leaves where little or no grass is visible will need to be managed” — raked, blown or bagged and removed. No mower turns a buried lawn into a mulched one in a single pass, and a whole-leaf blanket left for winter mats under snow into precisely the damp, pressed layer snow mold needs.
When they are wet. Wait for a dry afternoon, or collect. The mower will tell you the same thing by clumping.
At the wooded edge. The one strip where clearing beats shredding has nothing to do with turf: leaf litter where lawn meets woods shelters ticks and their hosts. That boundary case is covered in fall lawn care and ticks in the yard.
What you collect does not need to leave the property either — a leaf pile is compost, and finished compost is the topdressing half of levelling and the organic-matter fix in waterlogged soil.
The Timing Bonus
Leaf drop overlaps the end of the mowing season, which makes the economics even simpler: you are already out there. The mower’s last month does double duty — the last mow happens when growth stops at consistent sub-50°F daytime highs, and every pass until then can be shredding leaves at zero additional effort. For cool-season lawns, that same final-mow window is when the year’s most valuable feeding lands: winterizer done right, which mulched leaves quietly subsidize.
The Short Version
Mow them in. MSU’s research says the lawn greens up on less fertilizer and — after three years — carried nearly 100 percent fewer dandelions and crabgrass; the leaves are nutrition and weed suppression you already own. Work thin and dry, cross once or twice, up to six inches at a time if the mower can shred it, and read the result at your feet: pieces that sift between the blades are right, a visible mat is too much, and a layer that hides the grass entirely gets collected before it becomes snow mold’s winter bed.

MSU says the same from the other direction: the tiny pieces settle into the turf, and by spring 'you won't even notice the tiny leaf particles.' If a visible mat is sitting on the lawn after mowing, that section exceeded what the turf can swallow and the excess comes off.
Will mulched leaves smother my grass or cause snow mold?
Shredded leaves that sift between the blades do not — whole leaves left in a blanket do. Iowa State's line is drawn at visibility: 'a layer of leaves where little or no grass is visible will need to be managed,' by raking, blowing or bagging. An unshredded mat pressed down by snow is exactly the damp, airless layer snow mold overwinters in. The practice is mow-and-shred, not leave-and-hope.
Do mulched leaves acidify the soil or feed weeds?
MSU's findings run the other way on weeds: the shredded layer covers the bare soil gaps where weed seeds germinate, and their reported result after three years was a near-total decrease in dandelions and crabgrass. On acidity, we found no extension source that documents lawn-relevant pH change from mowed-in leaves, and we will not invent one — if soil pH worries you, the answer is a soil test rather than a raking decision.
When should I rake instead?
Three cases. When the layer hides the grass — Iowa State's threshold — collect it; the compost pile or municipal collection beats smothering the turf. When the leaves are wet, wait or collect, because wet leaves clump rather than shred.
