A dull mower blade shreds the leaf tip rather than slicing it, and the frayed, whitish edge that results loses more water and gives disease an easier entry — which is why our mowing guide treats blade sharpness as a lawn health issue rather than a maintenance chore. This sharpens a mower blade for twenty dollars and no electricity, and it handles pruners, shears and loppers on the same tool. Set expectations correctly: a hand sharpener restores a working edge on a blade in normal condition. It will not rescue a blade that has hit a rock and gone visibly nicked, and it cannot rebalance a blade — an unbalanced blade vibrates and wears the spindle, so a badly damaged one should be replaced rather than filed.
